TonySFLDLTHR Report post Posted January 10, 2019 Here is just some information on how we cut leather and how we figure it. Would make it much easier if we could just find square cows.
bermudahwin Report post Posted January 10, 2019 Good points, very well made. I am lucky that I buy by the side, butt, hide skin etc, but witnessed this precise issue at my leather factors a couple of weeks back. Newbie "how much for the whole goatskin?" got his answer... Newbie "thats more than I wanted to pay; how much for this central panel, to cover a book?" when he was told it would be the same as the skin, as he was leavving no more than 4 inches around the edge and that made it unfeasible to sell, he was flummoxed. He could not understand that even though he may have been leaving 3 sq ft (total) it was worthless to the salesman. H
JLSleather Report post Posted January 10, 2019 Well, that was upsetting. I do understand that I may have to pay a bit for "convenience". LOTS of times I needed ONE side, or even PART of one side, and went to SLC for that. It costs more than from H.O., and I don't fault them folks for not workin' fer free. Just like I pay $2 for coffee at the gas station. I know I can go home and MAKE coffee fer 12¢ (random figure) but I'm already here and they have what I want. So long as the coffee is acceptable here, all is good. The store gets paid, the vendor gets paid, and I save a trip. Havin' said that, the upsetting part is ... what I gotta do gitta girl stand by me and tell me I'm right?@! And, STILL no 'girls of SLC' calendar@!?! Kevin, Mr. Darnell, lighten up fella's .. I'm jus' playin' ...
Big Sioux Saddlery Report post Posted January 11, 2019 Good explanation and I can relate. Customer likes to think "But you can make stuff out of the scrap and make money".
YinTx Report post Posted January 11, 2019 And they seem to be forgetting the time put into making sure you get the piece the size you need, and the time to search it out and then cut it up for you and then ship it. So much cheaper and easier for them to just send you a side. All that other service is an adder, shouldn't mind paying for it if that is what you want/need! YinTx let's be honest - not many of us use scrap and/or precut pieces. yes, it's helpful when we need some, but mostly... this brings to another point - if we can buy the best tooling leather directly from the source, why pay 2/3 grade for the same price or even higher? keep in mind that distributors will always get their bucks on reselling for a simple reason - they buy in bulk and on lower prices
