Help with hidden snaps

Recommended Posts

Hello all! I'm new to leather working and I recently made my first tri-fold long wallet. I am fairly pleased with the results except for the snap closure. The snap is hidden inside so it does not show on the outside of the front face. The result leaves a lump there.

Are there any 'flat' snaps I can use, or tips on fixing this?

Thanks!

Basic answer; no.

What you could do on the next one is to either use two layers of leather along and around the snap, with a hole in one layer so the snap is recessed, or use one thicker layer and skive around the snap place so its sort-of countersunk

What kind of snaps did you use?

If they were basic line 20/24 snaps from Tandy, instead of using the dome cap on 1 end, use the flat end on both. Will still have a bit of a hard spot but won't be as noticeable as the dome. If it's segma or glove snaps, pretty much SOL unless you want to start adding layers to hide them

You can get spring style snaps that dont have any dome side on the female outer side. WE call them invisible snaps which are for this purpose. In Australia here I can get them from Marish accessories. His catalogue does not show the post part I am talking about but it is available.  I would be very surprised if they were not available from Ohio Travel accessories. You will need the dies to install as well as they have a retractable post part that goes inside to hold for lining up the parts.

Thanks to all for the tips. I'll try them out on some scrap.

Here in Spain Waldes has this option, and Prym would have this available too. Instead of the cap/dome you can get the invisible one which is called blind cap. Like Brain said you would need the die for it. Another option is take your pliers and take off the cap, it comes in two parts but the post might not be as rigid as the ones used for this purpose, then hammer on a flat surface to set it. Also you will need to sand the edges a little as they come rough. Unfortunately Waldes only sell boxes of 1000 i think?

Here is a old wallet i opened to see what was inside, this is a Prym 2 snap. It still leaves a small mark after time.
