Hammering stitches

Is there a protocol relating to hammering flat finished stitches?

I don't usually flatten mine on belts or wallets, but i am coming round to hammering the stitching on bags.

Should it always be hammered or is it personal/customer preference?

imnsho, personal preference. I never hammer and only very occasionally run a stitch marker down them, just to tidy any that look askew

I've heard that flattening the stitches offers some protection by lowering their profile and avoiding some scuffs. If you stitch in a groove, it gets them out of the way even more. If you go for slanted stitches, the hammering sometimes improves that look a bit.

not exactly. you have to fit the tools/materials being used - groovers, thread, even needles

Might I add that I use a flat profile thread in, 0.5, 0.65, 0.8 and 1mm. When the stitch is pulled up tight the thread lies flat so I've never seen the need to further hammer it flat

I hammer down my stitches not only to flatten them but to close the holes a bit too

i always hammer my seems,stitches,i'ts better to see it.
