nate186 Report post Posted August 8, 2019 I need to split 8-10 oz bridle leather down to about 3 oz. The widest strips would be 3-4 inches. Can someone recommend a descent bench splitter for me? Thanks!
Matt S Report post Posted August 8, 2019 You'll struggle putting 4"straps through any pull skiver/splitter, have issues maintaing a consistent pull angle (ergo consistent thickness), and likely encounter stretching issues. A crank splitter, correctly setup for what you want to do, will probably work well. A band knife splitter is the ideal tool.
Big Sioux Saddlery Report post Posted August 8, 2019 I agree with Matt S. You'll have too much stretch going down to that weight with most bench splitters, especially with a strap that wide. Even a crank through doesn't handle anything under 6/7 very well. Band knife is the way to go.

I would say depends on what you want it for and how often do you plan on doing it...I use my tandy bench splitter for just this purpose on some items...mainly wallet card pockets...just split it before cutting to exact width as it probably will stretch some and when you stretch one way it gets narrower the other. If this is something you plan on a reg basis, i would say contact your leather supplier and ask them to split it first. A super sharp bench blade will make quick work of a couple inch straps, 4" may be a little tough.
nate186 Report post Posted August 24, 2019 Thanks, it is for wallet type stuff, not heavy production. I think your answer was probably spot on for me.
JLSleather Report post Posted August 24, 2019 For less than the cost of the bench splitter, you can get the leather split for you before it arrives. Wickett-Craig and Hermann Oak will do that free of charge.
