Skiving machine problems

Dear Friends

I just got myselv two skiving machine wrecks, that I want to restore.

One is a Dania, and the brand of the other one is unknown.

On one of the machines, the knife shaft is completely jammed. I have now soaked it with WD40 and will give it some time.

Any idea on how to remove a jammed knife shaft? Is a grinder the only solution?

Any idea how/where/why the knife shaft is jammed? There's not a huge amount of stuff in there. Couple of bearings and a worm gear to move the knife left and right. Is it rusted?

You might do better with a proper penetrating oil than WD40, which is really for displacing water. There's a lot of you can use, including specificly formulated stuff at various prices from £reasonable to £lots, but kerosene/paraffin oil, diesel fuel or automatic transmission fluid are the usual improvised penetrating oils that you might have knocking about.

I had some very stuck parts on a Pfaff 145 I've been restoring as I find parts.   I used PB Blaster, time, and some heat to get the parts to finally loosen up enough to get them apart without damaging them.   I would apply the PB Blaster let it sit for a while then apply some heat (from a blow (hair) dryer and later a paint stripper gun set on low) gently try and pry up the stuck piece and repeat.  Over time the parts came apart as the PB Blaster worked farther and farther between the stuck parts.

PS - I managed to move the knife shaft slightly more Yesterday evening

If the old grease or oil is gummed apply heat with a heat gun. I also had success with paint thinner (don´t do both at the same time)

But will that cause the shaft to become completely jammed?

Last year I wrecked a skiving machine by messing with the knife shaft (I wanted to take it out). I susptect that a rubber seal had jammed it.

What's the symptom with the knife shaft -- is it refusing to turn, or is it not shifting left/right when you try to turn the knife advance wheel? Has the machine suffered rust or impact damage?

Got any photos of what's going on?

Hi Matt.

The knife runs with no problem, but it is not possible to shift left/right.

It is an old machine.

I think I solved the problem. The screw with the red arrow was extremely tight. Once released the shaft unjammed.

Now my question is how to remove the knife shaft. Can I detach it (green arrow) and move the shaft all the way to the left and remove it?

The last time I tried it on a similar machine, I completely destroyed it.
