Machine for canvas

Recommended Posts

I currently have a Cobra class 4 and a Pfaff 145 h3. I need/ would like a cylinder arm sewing machine for sewing multiple layers of  medium weight canvas on... what brands should I look at? My Cobra is too heavy duty for topstitching  my canvas bags and a home sewing machine is not enough. The Pfaff would work perfectly if it was a cylinder arm-(I'm sewing bags). I would appreciate any thoughts or information. Thank you!

The Pfaff 335 would seem an obvious choice but I would think any of the usual cylinder arm upholstery-class machines should work, depending whether you're looking at buying new or used.

The question I have is what size of thread are you using or planning on using in the new machine. Then decide on what diameter size of cylinder would be best with patcher type machines nose diameter being the smallest. From that the field of machines could be narrowed down. I do agree with dikman that you probably looking at a 335 type machine. Then decide on brand name or clone, new or used.

+1 for Pfaff 335 in any casting. Foot sets are abundant on the Ebay but they might require some minor fitting with a dremel or similar tools. Also get a swing-out edge guide - it saves tons of time and effort.

If you have a choice of it vs Adler 67, take Pfaff as it has an all-metal gear drive while Adler uses a cloth timing belt which has a tendency for breaking.
