Puritan Sewing machine

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I just bought a Puritan machine but I cannot sew the chain correctly, I think it is out of time, someone from you could help me by sending me a very slow video of the movement of the needle and the parts that compose it at tangle the thread?

I would appreciate it infinitely

Are you using cotton or linen thread? Nylon & polyester won't work in them.

Hi Bob,

Do you happen to know what the maximum size thread for a Puritan might be? Using the largest needle/awl combo. I have just picked up a high post single needle model. It seems to stitch alright with thin thread but that doesn't really suit my purposes - uppers on heavy leather boots in conjunction with my Cowboy Outlaw.

Most people use a lockstitch on uppers. .It will use up to a #5 cord (346 nylon) but you'll have big loops on the back side,so I think 138 would hold good & not be too big on the bottom.

I'm a little surprised to hear that.  How come?  Does it have something to do with twisting the thread when making chain loops?

I don't have a Puritan and it's been a long time since I played around with one.  Seems there a fair number still in commercial use out there, surely they're running synthetic threads?

Many moons ago the first one I ever worked on just wouldn't sew using 138 nylon.I mentioned it to someone & he said trying some cotton thread with some lube,it sewed great. The nylon doesn't hold the loop like the cotton does.

Thanks Bob. I just saw your post.

My intention is to use the Puritan for vamping. I'm making tall logger style boots. The Cowboy Outlaw is terrific for most things but can get a little tight when trying to manipulate the uppers for stitching the vamp - the Puritan has plenty of room. It's the 36 inch version. I broke a bolt for the spring bar that holds down the presser foot when I collected the machine. It should be running again as soon as I cut a new bolt with 32 TPI. It is not possible to buy such a thing.

Appreciate the help

Hi Lambchop. Thanks for the reply. I'm not 100% certain but I think Puritan industries is closed. The website is definitely down. I have written but no response as of yet.

Is there any chance I could buy a copy of the tech manual from you in pdf form?

Thanks Lambchop. It says unavailable for some reason. Maybe a moderator can assist with that?

What size is the file?  Is it located in your system/network, are you able to send it via email?  If you can send it via email, message me and I'll give you an email address to send it to so I cam post it here.

The whatever is worth, I think you could do a 25 meg attachment with Gmail. You should be able to set up a Gmail account easily enough.
