My neighbor is teaching me how to ride. He mentioned hobbles would be a useful small item I could make as I’m just getting into saddle and tack work. I’d like to surprise him with a pair as payment for horse training. There are a lot of different styles but as with everything in leather work: some things are more practical than others. I’ve seen “quick catch,” “single ring,” “double ring,” and “lace through.” Just curious if they all work fairly well or if there are some that are better than others. I know these can sometimes be used in an emergency situation where the horse might be in trouble so I want to ensure they will be quick and easy to use.

Personally, I like double ring.  Lace through ride on the saddle well.  Single ring seem to me to put the horse's feet too close together.

Double ring (or square) is best and provides versatile strap

I like the figure 8 style, easy to use and they hang well from your back "D" or buckle around your horses neck if your country isn't brushy. They are easy to make and the only hardware is the buckle.

I'll second oltoot - This is my favorite type.  Easy to make and conserves leather usage.

Measure around your biggest horse's neck and be sure that you leave enough extra on the end to buckle around as a neck rope, when needed.
