Members Tulsa Posted September 16, 2021 Members Report Posted September 16, 2021 My wife has her eye set on a leather splitting machine from Techsew and I’m wondering if anyone here has knowledge of any import taxes or duties associated with shipping from Canada to US? The fine people at Techsew are not aware of any import fees when shipping to US, and the import specialists at the Border Patrol office apparently don’t have time to answer phone calls. Just wanting to consider the full costs before taking the plunge. Everyone I’ve asked is only “…Pretty Sure…” of their answer, and that’s not sure enough for me. Thanks Tulsa Quote
Members mike02130 Posted September 16, 2021 Members Report Posted September 16, 2021 Did you not search Google? So many variables. Why buy from Canada and not USA? I see them from USA sellers for $1,450 including delivery. Quote @mike02130 Instagram

Feel free to post here if you find a link that defines import duties on industrial leather equipment from Canada, because I can't find a definitive link. Otherwise I'll conclude there are none. My assumption is, if every techsew machine that came South was followed by a tax bill, we would hear about it all the time. Tulsa Quote
Members Klara Posted September 17, 2021 Members Report Posted September 17, 2021 Doesn't US customs have a website? I'm in Europe, and I've found most of the info I needed for importing online and the rest by writing an email. Quote

Yes there is a website, but key page links to declaration forms are broken, and it makes only vague references to percentages of import taxes based on value, depending on where it’s coming from. Then references trade pacts and what you can, or cannot, take into another country, with no real info about what I want to know. I went to my local customs and border protection station, and was told they don’t know anything about imports, and to call the station in Dallas. 4 calls got no responses. I was hoping someone would report on a recent purchase from Techsew. There is a cobra dealer 3 hours drive from here, maybe we’ll go there soon. Thanks to All, I’m going on a motorcycle ride. Hmm, well obviously you did not ask such a simple question, did you? Perhaps a back story would've helped? I really don't give a damn where you buy the machine. I tried to help you out by telling you that you can buy a Techsew machine in the USA for $1,450 including delivery. Your lack of information did not make it clear that you have some alternative reason to buy in Canada. I recommend that you ask on a different forum. It really is not that difficult to find that information. Edited September 18, 2021 by mike02130 added info Quote @mike02130 Instagram
Members mrwatch Posted September 18, 2021 Members Report Posted September 18, 2021 My very limited experience is that if the machine was built and sold with a serial number by an american company , I would think their would be no import tax. With the dollar exchange rate, cost of shipping, and time thru U S Customs along with the boarder closing due to the Covid, their must be a sweet deal of the price? Again if made off shore and sold around the world by many companies then their is very likely to be a tax and the vendor should tell you that over the phone. Quote
Techsew Ron Posted September 28, 2021 Report Posted September 28, 2021 When purchasing any machine from us, there are NO import taxes or additional fees of any kind. Quote Techsew Industrial Sewing Machines Call toll-free: 866-415-8223 Visit www.techsew.com

This is an international forum... I don't know what DDP stands for, but I'm certain @Techsew Ron means within Canada/USA. Nothing else makes sense. Techsew must have figured out the Canada/USA issues pretty well, but my prior experience with items manufactured OUTSIDE of North America are that duty is charged when the item arrives in North America. Whether that's Canada or the USA. And in the past, when I've bought something from the USA that was NOT manufactured in North America, I've had to pay duty when it crosses the border into Canada, (based on the country of manufacture) even though a duty was already charged/paid when it arrived in the USA. So effectively my cost of the product is usually higher if I buy it via the USA than if I import it directly (because duty is only paid one time). Of course there are other factors, such as the importer in the USA may be getting bigger discounts based on volume than I would get for one-of purchases. I don't know if TechSew brings machines in directly to Canada and directly to the USA, or if there's only one North American arrival point. But I trust that they've figured out the best way and believe Ron when he says there are no additional charges (I'd say within North America).
