Members scottishshoemaker Posted January 11, 2009 Members Report Posted January 11, 2009 The forum is great. Hi, I'm working in Perth, Scotland an found the forum thru another forum, Work with the NHS as an Orthopeadic Shoemaker/Orthotic Technician. I am also a memeber of a Jacobite Historical Group and have made odds and sods for myself and friends. This is where you guys an ladies come in. I'm looking to get into tooling leather and do not have the foggiest where to start. I have worked with leather for the last 19 years, but tooling is a whole new ball game.. Quote
Members gary Posted January 11, 2009 Members Report Posted January 11, 2009 Can't help you on the tooling, tried it myself but just don't have the time to get any good. However, you'll find people will fall over themselves trying to help you here. You can't find a better place for anything, leather-related or not. May see you some time - I'm over in Mallaig. You're probably colder than me, but a lot drier. Gary Quote

I'm just south of Oswestry in Shropshire - I'd guess you'll have heard of the orthopaedic hospital there. If you ever get below the border then I'll gladly give you whatever guidance I can with the tooling - otherwise drop me a PM and we'll arrange a telephone chat. As Roo said, there are lots of people willing to share their knowledge here so I'm sure you'll get offers closer to home. Ray Quote
Members Wyvern Posted January 12, 2009 Members Report Posted January 12, 2009 (edited) to this forum also Scottishshoemaker. I'm glad you made the journey. There are lots of folks here that will jump in and help! Like I said before, just read and pound some leather. When you have questions post here, someone will know the answer or tell you where to find it! Edited January 12, 2009 by Wyvern Quote
Contributing Member BillB Posted January 12, 2009 Contributing Member Report Posted January 12, 2009 Scottishshoemaker, Welcome to the forum. Here is what worked for me when I got into leather carving or leather tooling depending on which term you want to use: 1. Got a beginners kit from Tandy with the basic tools (Swivel Knife, bevel, shader, etc.) some easy projects and some directions. 2. Practice 3. Bought some scrap leather from Tandy to practice on. 4. More Practice 5. Bought some books by F.O.Baird and Al Stolhman 6. More practice 7. Bought some simple project kits (purses, quivers, etc.) to make things for my family and friends That was 1970s and I am still learning. When I started, there was no web or network of associates, there was only Tandy and Western tooling. My experience was all on the east coast of USA. This forum has shown me that there are lots of different ways to use leather and some very artistic folks. Look around, there are several sub forums that have pinned topics that will walk you though making that object. Most important, Have Fun. BillB Quote
