Nose And Heel 1 2

Hey all, I've had some private questions lately about how I do somethings, so here is some photos of some of the process of puttting the nose and heel on a bosal. I wrote some really discriptive stuff and managed to erase it twice, so you are now left with the cliff notes. I find the center of the braid which is usually about 17 inches from either end. I use sewing needles to mark the center and ends. I quit using markers or pens because if I wanted to change something a little the marks would sometime hinder that. I have a bunch of scrap shape leather around here and use a lot of it for building up for knots. The first layer is laced on very tight, and the second …

Okay, here are a series of pics of making a folded honda. First, measure out a strap 1 1/2" by 8" or 9". Make a circle and overlap it about 1 1/2", then mark the ends. These marks will later tell you where to start your holes for the laceing and also where to cut the hole for the tapered end to go into.

Hello Im wondering if anybody can help me find a tutorial or show me where I can find how to plait a nylon or paracord horn wrap. I know its not leather but all the saddlemakers on here surely know how to do it or where to find out how. I need to cover my calf roping saddle horn and would rather learn how to braid one myself rather than buy one. Thanks.

I am looking at Bruce Grants Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding pages 478, to 481 Braid on Braid. I am not following though and not sure from the drawings or pictures what he was trying to get at. Does anyone have either pictures of their work to share or advice on what they have done? Thank you in advance for your input, and I am off to finger out what I can.

I got the Australian lace strander. I have a piece of soft leather that is sort of like work-glove weight, about 2 oz or so (1.6mm with calipers). I didn't cut it into a circle for starters, I cut it into somewhat of a pear shape. I'm having a lot of trouble getting consistent width (I'm aiming for 1/8 inch or for everyone else in the world, like 3 mm). Does anyone have any tips for using this tool? I'm sure there is a bit of learning to get it working well. I also have a new razor blade in it. Cheers

Hello! Long time lurker but finally made an account, bought and built a few tools, and ordered a side of rawhide. After braiding up a lariat core loping hackamore in the style of a bosal I am ready to make the jump to the real thing. My plan is to make all the braided gear for my young mares progression to the bridle. So, my question! I bought a side of rawhide from OA Leather Supply, it's a 3-4 oz Rawlings Tennessee Tanning Co. Will I be able to get thick enough strings out of this to braid a decent core? The mare is soft soft soft in that loping hack already so she doesn't need a stiff core. If not, what thickness should I be looking for? Most that I'm findin…

Here's a keyring dohicky I recently made. Needed something to help me from losing my keys. I don't get it. It's just a braided latigo strap from Tractor Supply Company. It sure does catch people's eyes. I get lots of compliments. This was a 15min project. End nippers and a ring.

I have started learning a bit about braiding with rawhide lace. However, I can’t afford the tools for prepping and refining the lace. Like cutting, thinning, beveling. Does anyone recommend some more rustic/ DIY ways to make those tools. Ie, resources or guides to make my own tools.

Hello all! I am getting interested in trying a little rawhide appliqué. I have made a couple of kangaroo hide bullwhips before, so I have the tools to cut lace, resize it and bevel it. I also have the Grant rawhide Encyclopedia. I am more interested in how holes are punched and their spacing. What tools are used? The book does not really cover those topics well. They do not tell you to use a lacing chisel, stitching chisel or hole punch necessarily. I have done some testing with a lacing hole punch and it does ok, but it appears some applications should use slits/slots. Most examples of appliqué I have seen online do not seem to use lacing chisels or stitching…
