Thought I'd share the methods I've pieced together for making a triple stitched halter with a rolled throatlatch (link below). I've benefitted greatly from the advice of members of this forum and hope others find this information useful. I welcome your suggestions, corrections, alternative methods, etc. Thanks for looking. ellenberger-halter-methods.pdf

I am attempting to make a large size horse halter from the Tandy pattern. I have everything cut and ready to assemble, but it seems giant according to the sizes listed. What have I done wrong?

I'm making a breeching for a mule saddle and wondered if anyone had a pattern to share. I have a concept and an old harness to look at, but any information would help. Thanks, Randy

I was once again inspired by @TomE, but at the moment I can't find the post with his beautiful work. For Christmas I made a leather lead with a stallion chain connected to it for Gustavs girlfriend. She is an incredibly skilled dressage rider, and like all the dressage riders I know, she prefers her tack to be black, so that kind of dictated the colour of the lead rope :-) I have to admit that I have forgotten some of the details since it has been a couple of months since I made it. But the strap is 1" wide, I think the total length is close to 8' including the chain. The lead rope is doubled part of the way and ends up being a single layer of leather near the …

This is my 2nd shot at making an English bridle. I took quite a bit of time on it going back and forth looking at posts here (Thanks @TomE for the inspiration!) and websites of custom bridles. As always I welcome critiques to help me improve. I used 9-10oz vegtan for the crown piece, along with 3-4oz burgundy English bridle for the lining and 1/8" Landau Foam for the padding. The brow band and nose band are 2 pieces of 4-5oz vegtan with a 10oz core, the lining/padding for the nose band is the same as for the crown. I used NFO, then Fiebing's black pro dye, then Fiebing's leather balm with atom wax. The crown, brow band, and nose band are machine sewn. …

Split Reins 1 2

Not everything I make is black, it only seems like it. After making 3 black halters in the past month, I treated myself to some brown leather. These split reins are made from 12/13 oz Hermann Oak chocolate harness leather. 5/8" x 8 ft long. I dyed the edges and back with Fiebings Show Brown. The strings on the water loops are cut from HO latigo and beveled with a nice Ron's edger that I bought from @bruce johnson. Learned a lot about split reins by reading old posts on this forum. Think I will try making reins from latigo vs harness leather, sewn reins, and weighted reins. I welcome your ideas and feedback.

Yet another black halter. This client asked for a fancy-shaped, padded crown, so I learned how to cut and sew curves. Living on the edge.

Halter or bridle? This training halter has an additional noseband that attaches to reins, functioning as a bitless bridle. The flexible noseband is made from woven rope wrapped in soft leather. A browband was added to secure the crown. Made from Hermann Oak bridle leather, nappa leather for the padding, stainless steel hardware from Beiler's Manufacturing and Supply, and Equus rubber grips on the reins from Abbey England.

Halter and lead for Western halter class. The triple stitching barely fit in the 3/4" wide straps, but that's what the client wanted for a horse with a refined head. The 8 ft lead is weighted (double thickness) on proximal half, and made from 10-11 oz Hermann Oak chocolate harness leather. The client wanted brass hardware on the halter and a stainless lead chain so that's how we roll.

Guys & gals I got a friend, who broke a rear cinch strap on his J&J Saddle. Well I elected myself to make a new one & got a couple questions. #1: what kind of leather is used in the cinch straps? Veg-tan? #2 do they use a reinforcement piece sandwiched in between the layers of leather where the strap adjustment holes are? Thanks. Any & all help will be greatly appreciated.
