Hello, Finally got tired of the weaver stand and went and took the time to build one. Would have liked to have gotten one of Ron's but don't have the means at the moment. Maybe if the wife would get a fourth job, HHHMMMMM, probabley not. In the meantime the one I built seems to be working all right. I made the top to the specifications in the stohlman books and so far it is working good. I put carpet pad under the canvas and tried to build it up a little more like a set of withers. The canvas is a little slick but I use a chap leather on top of it and it works fine. It does adjust up and down by undoing a tension bolt, but mostly I use it where it is set. Have a good o…

I have put together a list as best I could of hand made wood/rawhide saddle tree makers and their contact information. The best way to contact these people is by phone. Most don't have websites or listed e-mail addresses anywhere. I have added them where I could find them. If you know of other makers, or of changes in the contact information, please add to the list. I just thought if we had it all in one place it would be easier for saddle makers to find. OK, I want to build a saddle. What tools do I need? Please tell me the tools I'll need to start and complete a western saddle. I don't mean stamping tools and such. I mean tools like a drawdown stand and stirrup stretchers and such. Thanks Joel

Hello folks! I've started building hard-to-find, old-style stirrups of various kinds for period saddles, and here's my first offering: "Doghouse" style stirrups, suitable for saddles made from the 1860's to the '90's, made from steam-bent ash wood, 1/2 inch thick. The cross bars are solid oak. The blued steel rivets and other metal fittings are all hand forged. The oval reinforcement plates on this pair are solid brass, with blued steel or German silver available as options. Measurements on this pair are 4 1/2 inch depth (front to back measurement), 5 inch height and 5 inch width (measured inside the foot opening). Finish is three coats of oil. I'll be making several…

I have been making leather goods for over 25 years and have had a lot of interest from clients over the past year and a half about making and/or repairing saddles and tack. This area of leather work is very new to me and I am in the process of making a matching set of a headstall, breast collar, and spur leathers. I had ordered some of the hardware early on but found that I was short on a few items. The problem I have is no matter where I go (i.e. buckleguy, Weaver, Springfield, Tandy, etc.) I find that most carry some things but I have been unable to find a place that has ALL items in the sizes that I need. For instance I am using a 3" ring, 1 1/4" D rings, 1" heavy…

Hi guys. I'm slowly getting ready to build my first saddle so I just went through the process of making a drawdown stand. I made it a mix between Al Stohlman's simple design (there's a small sketch in the book when he details the extensive one) and the one in the Bruce Grant book "Making Cowboy Horsegear". Here is the simple version: And this is after "Pimp My Drawdown" (I was bored). I also made a simple sketch for other newbies wanting to build one and in need of some basic measurements - I'm pretty tall, so you might want to adjust the height. Let me know what you think! Cheers from Austria, Anne

Let's say a saddle turns up at an auction, no name on it for whatever reason, maybe the hanger had it and was replaced. How would someone know which, if any, tree maker made the tree? Do most good tree makers mark them somewhere the marking might be visible? I see SO many nice saddles advertised, and the only thing the owner can give as information is the gullet size and the shape of the swell. Or they give obscure (to the layman) letter system like a "BL tree" or some such, maybe or maybe not with a saddlemaker name on it. The tree is the foundation of the whole saddle; I'd think it most important to know and advertise that piece of info FIRST. If they kno…
