I am going to make a rifle case out of fabric and want to know what is the best liner to use? Flannel? Quilted fabric? I plan on using Cotton Duck on the outside. Should I put some kind of padding between the duck and inside liner? Where is the best place to get zippers and webbing? THank you for your help! G

I bought a Chaylor-Fenneli Interior for a note book. It has card board all the way up for backing. My question is: Am I suppose to sew though this cardboard with my machine around the edges? Any other helpful words of wisdom are welcome.

Pancake Holster Pattern
yehagirl replied to yehagirl's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks for the detailed instructions. I think I can follow that! I was thinking that the pattern had to be a set shape... But what you are telling me is that it can pretty much be any shape that suits my fancy? Like a big pair of lips, a heart or some other girly shape? Thanks again - both of you. I will post my girly holster when I get it made! Wow. THanks for that... -
Hi, I am trying to make a pancake holster. I have access to a Glock 19 - 9 mm, XDM 9 mm, and a Walther P22. I found the holster pattern from Springfield Leather, but it does not have any of the guns that I have access too. I have made a few holsters for single actions using the AS holster book. I am currently playing with a holster to hold the Glock, but it looks like the cowboy holsters (not the pancake style) . I am trying to fine tune it, I have cut and pinched and prodded it , so its really UGLY. Anyway, It is still a western holster and not a pancake. Is there anywhere that sales one of the three gun patterns that I have in pancake style? I am not sure how to make my own pattern for the pancake. (I have watched the video and read many post on here and the web on how to put it together, just not giving me the pattern. Any help would be appreciated.

Bar C, Your story sound similar to my story about 3 years ago with the same company. I got swatches in the mail, was assured that the leather was soft and plyable on the phone, quality leather for pillow making. No scratches...... occasional brand.... I get the leather and it is all scratched up, not plyable - pretty stiff, and did not look anything like my sample. I called for a few weeks and finally gave up hope, as I was too busy at the time. It sat in the box for about a year - waiting for the pick up slip - which never came. I just stopped buying from them. At the time they were the only place that I got leather from. I did receive calls from them a few times after, but it was to sell me more leather, not to see what happened with the order I was unhappy with. When I would bring it up to their attention, I was told that they would send a pick up tag...... Never happened. After they called about 4 times trying to get me to buy more leather, I asked them to take me off their list, that I would never buy from them again. I tell you this story because I don't want you to feel like you are the odd duck out..... It happened to me too! On a good note, I was able to use the stiff leather, it was a backer for table runners and boot stockings. G

Yeah, I would say your new shop has a little bit more room. It looks nice! How deep are your work tables? I spent last night looking at some of the other threads about work tables.... I had a hard time finding the links by myself. I was typing in work bench and it was located under workstation. Someone should make it a sticky Thanks for y'all posting the pictures.

I am trying to build a work bench for tooling on. I am trying to get ideas as how I want it. Can some of you veterans show pictures of your working area? What works best for you and why? I have about 4.5 ft area to put a desk/ table.

I am looking for a zig zag machine to sew leather...... Hair on hide and upholstery type leather. I was looking at the Consew Cp146 R... It is a portable unit. Also was looking at the Consew CN 2053R, it is a table machine. I would prefer something portable, but want to make sure its powerful enough to zig zag pieces of hair on hide together. The 146 is about 500.00 and the 2053 is 975.00. MY project is to use up my scrap hair on hide on various home decor things. I am not wanting to spend alot of money on a machine. I have a Juki DNU 1541, but it does not zig zag. I have a PFAFF fabric machine and it zig zags on the leather, but not that good. Any suggestion would be appreciated..... other brands? I Have looked in the archives, and the one machine recommended has been discontinued. Thank you for any help you may give

I have made a habit of unplugging my surge protector (that has everything plugged into it) every time I turn my computer off. I have heard of too many people who have had all their stuff fried, even plugged into the surge protector. The stuff they did nto have plugged into the surge protector was fine!

When I started my business I was going to use paypal - until I read the whole contract. They basically said that they owned my web site if I used pay pal. You might try using Mals http://www.mals-e.com/ for your credit card processing. It is pretty simple to use and they have a forum to help if you get stuck!

I second that...... What is the dremel used for in leather craft???

I guess I am bass ackwards, because I bought the top of the line Rifle and put a scope on it that cost more than the rifle, then started playing with rifles with no scopes or fancy frills! I had to laugh when I first read your post. I understand what you are saying, but you reminded me of my dad. He would spend 5 hours making a tool to do a job that he could have bought for a few dollars . My dad was the king of Jerry -Rig. I have taken after my dad for the most of my life. A few years ago I got tired of not having the right tools to get the job done and finally broke down and bought good tools. The reason for my original post was so I could find out more information on what the "good" tools were. Also, as I posted in my original post, my income will dry up within the next few months, if I am going to get anything that I will need it needs to be now. But thank you for your insightful post. blowkiss.bmp blowkiss.bmp

HI Bill, I read the post of casing leather, it helped alot with my tandy hide. I am attempting to do Sheridan carving. Thank you for the tip on making your own oblong hole. I will try that! My ultimate goal is to make a gun case for one of my Rugers and other things for around the house. I have no desire to make a saddle, face mask or Armor. Ginny

Yes, I sat right next to her! Tell her I said Hi! Thank you for your recommendations. I will get what you mentioned. I have a lot of round punches, with a few extra's. I do a lot of hole punchin'! Ginny

Hi Y'all! I have been lurking for a few weeks. Thank you to all those who post your wonderful work and all the great advice given. I went to the Sheridan show in 2006 and took the "introduction to leather" class. That was the first time I had done any tooling. Afterwards I went shopping and at the show. While I was at the Hide Crafters booth asking what tools I would need for Sheridan style, the sales man said ask this man, he knows. Behind me was Chan Geer. He took me over to Barry Kings booth and loaded me up with tools. I got the basic tools that are posted on Barry's website, a swivel knife, edger, mallet.... Off I went ..... then found Old Smoothie booth.... had to have one of those too! Anyway, I got some more stuff. After reading this site, I realize there is a lot that I don't have yet. I was hoping that y'all could help me get what else I might need. Here is what I have: #0, #2 Lifters #0, #2 Checkered Bevelers #27, 3 & 7 hole Bargrounders #2 12 Seed Flower Center #1 Center Shader #1 Leaf Liner #0,#4 Mule Foot #1,#2 Horizontal Thumbprint #1,#2 Lined Veiner #2 Lined and Scalloped Veiner #3 Scalloped Camouflage BK mallet, 2 Swivel Knife -both 1/4 straight blade handful of stamping tools from Hide Crafters 1 molding tool #4 edger # 1 edger wood boner thing (sorry, dont know what its called!) BK Glass Slicker Edge Beader ( I think) Strap Cutter Rivet Setter Stitching Groover Cheap Skiver Punch Set Rouge Tool Holder Various dyes Tan Kote Edge Kote mink Oil Finish spray Rubber Cement Granite stone Several Chan Geer DVD's and book. AS Belt Book AS carving book Sheridan Style Carving Book Buckstitching Book AS Tool Book AS Holster Book Another Holster book (on sale at tandy for 2.50) I have some HO hides coming from that Stevenson /Paxton place along with some Tree Bark fleece for a future gun rug/bag. I have practiced a little on a Tandy Hide. My work needs help! ( I wont post a picture till I get a real hide to work on, the stuff I have feels like cardboard and cuts like a 20 year old dead cow.) . I bet you are wondering why it has taken me 3 years to pull out my tools? Well... Work picked up and I was working about 12 to 18 hours a day for a few years, since the they decided to crash the economy, I have lots of time on my hands and can finally start playing! My goal is to get everything I will need right now, as my future income looks like it will be in the toilet! So what I am asking of you is, can you think of any other tools that I might need, and where to get them. I called Bob Douglas and he is sending a catalog. Also contacted Cook for an awl. What else do I need. These are some things I think I might need, where do I get them? Lacing Awl Oblong Punches, What sizes are most used? Stitching Punch Molding tools - what size? Edge Burnisher - will the plastic on work or do I need the more expensive wood one? Thanks for any help you can give!!!
