i have many Argentine friends who utilize a few different methods but the one that seems to be thebest is with rain water and asshes "Para ello uso ceniza a la cual libero de toda parte gruesa que pueda dañar el cuero. Las proporciones que utilizo son mas o menos un balde y medio de 20 lts lo que mezclo con 2 baldes de agua de lluvia los pongo en un recipiente apropiado y lo revuelvo 4 o 5 veces al dia durante una semana. a la semana pongo los cueros, en las proporciones que hable alcanza para hacer 3 cueros de chivo a la vez, se revuelve misma cantidad de veces por dia para que la ceniza no decante y mueda entreverarse con el cuero, a los 2 o 3 dias ya casi esta dependera de la temperatura ambiente, cuando el pelo sale con la mano lo saco lo extiendo sobre una superficie plana y con la mano previamente calzar un par de guantes de cocina ( el primero lo hice sin nada y me quedaron destruidas) le saco los pelos, simplemente pasando la mano a contrapelo, luego los manguereo bien a presion y los coloco uno o dos dias mas en agua de lluvia, los limpio bien antes de estaquearlos y ya esta. el estaqueado lo hago sobre tablas con clavos a no mas de 4 centimetros uno de otro best is with hard wood asshes and some rain watter. basically " what he basically mentiones is to mix two 5gal containers with one 5gl container of hardwood asshes craeting aslurry with the mixture after you flesh the hide soak it in ther for a couple of days till the hai slips by hand just pull on it then let it sit a bit more till it slps by rubbing across yur hand or with wooden wedge scrapping it off. during the whole process you stir the mixture around a few times a day to avoid separation and thats it a green way of dehairing. next just hose it down bofre dehairng and after to clean out the remaining ash and yur good. this is supposed to creat the alkaline environmet needed to lossen up the hair folicoles. hope it helps, they rave about this methode but rain water might be hard to come by. im not sure if this would work with regular tap watter? but you can also soak it in a rinnung stream or creek and by weighing it down with someroks and simple moving the rocks around so it get consistent moisture and when the hai slips by hand just scrape it off, this is how native americans did their dehairing according to some of the books i have and it worked for them. the tric is to open up the pores to let the hair foulicule come out. lets us know how this turns out which ever way you decide to do it and pics are great also!!

hello Mike well this is just my two cents, i noticed that when cutting thicker rawhide too much moisture was not good at all i would case it in a plastic bag wrapped in a damp cloth and found that cutting was more consistent with less moisture than usual i simply spray plain water as i go around the edges of the hide as i cut to maintain the moisture. when i cut down the strings to size i would case just to about leather consistency when i split to avoid too much stretching and resized tothe width after casing once more at the same consistency. also i should mention that i stopped using soap and other stuff just plain old water worked for me, specially after i had split it down.

very nice !!!!!!!!! nothing much to say other than GREAT WORK !!!!!
-
great Rob its always nice to know . the tassels look great and which ever way you look at them the knots look great the braids look great and the colors go good together. nice work again.
-
great work as always Rob !!! they look great the only thing missing are the details, IE lace count, size, width, J/K those look really good congrats
-
looks good !!! hope you find a buyer soon
-
ive used it to make a bracelete or two it is really !! thin and if you put too much moisture in it it will get become stretchy but if you case it right some of the argentine braiders use it to make knife handles sometimes i guess its like everything else just use it and practice. good luck

Dont doo it !!!!!!! dont buy a rawhide bend. long story short its only a peace of the hide and from what i got from our tandy guy it is also a split so hence no grain !!!! if you want to get into it just buy lave on ebay its pretty cheap (relative) or get tejas industries, Bill Confer ive heard good things about him havent bought any myself cause i have my own a side will be way more use full to you not only in cutting lace but in practicing " casing the strands" even how you are more comfortable cutting. look around make sure its not a raw hide split basically they split at the tannery before the tanning and then just make it raw hide. take care hope this helps and PS. how about a cooperative purchase ? we can split the hide any one else interested? for those of us who need the practice
-
i would suggest a Tom hall book instead it cheaper but has great info it also has a great section on braids in "western tack tips"

the pattern you came up with is a half round braid the other one that roo4u mentioned is more square with out a core but will be more "simmetrical" orlike he said you can do o1 u1 and go that way.
-
two splice the braid end with end(beginning) you would leave two strands at the beginning longer than the other two this would give you two longer ones at the end. put make the end meet and feed the longer ones at the end with the shorter ones at the beginning do the same with the other two and burri the ends with in the braid. this is one way to do it or just make them meet and cover them with a pineapple knot. i sent you a link hope this all helps sorry i dont have any pics of the splice.

this is my two cents try something like this you can just use a smaller bead if you want or even punch the center out of a small button. these are necklaces i made for my kid a while back . i just took two laces and started the four strand braid around something approximately the same size and when i had enough i fed it through and made the loop then at the end i but the bead in but for the first one i made a nice terminal knot this one i don't remember how i made it i just played around with it. you can use anything or just build it up and put small pineapple over it but just make it small . hope it helps

berges in the BG's book this is called a half round braid. in the book he shows a six or eight strand braid but this one looks like its done with ten or twelve the sequence would be the same just add to the o1u1's accordingly this braid is done with an even number of strands. for the core, like Brian said just use a flat peace of leather or something flexible that will hold its shape. hope it helps.

what ever you work on next i'm sure it will be great no matter how much i think i know or understand knots i think the ground work is what i have trouble "eyeballing " but like i said they look great keep the pics coming
-
great !!!! they look really good !!! isn't the "i finally finished" feeling great? i have to say the buttons look good overall, i have also found that making more and more buttons just makes it easier and they get better. well many props on this project and I cant wait to see your next project, what do you have in mind ? take care
-
you guys should see it !!! its even better in person great job Brian
-
well Megabit let me tell you that this is looking great !!!!! i particularly think your buttons look good. as far as making them look more like "twins" i should tell you that what helps me is making the ground work even it pretty much takes me more time to figure out what size is good than actually tying the buttons. . but liek i said before these look really good i think and like allways the progress pics are great. take care and keep it going
-
thanks for the comments everyone MEGABIT it took me alot less time to do this one but dressing all the knots took some patience cause they were all so small. the body is twelve strand the heall and the nose are four pass. hoo and the nose button is not a multi string knot i mae along TH and then interwove it to 4pass with one long continuous string so patience was key for me. take care yall.

well lately i have been working on some really small stuff, Brian is to blame for this. ive been working with the horse raw hide i got a while back and been taking advantage of the thin parts. this little bosal was a spur of the moment thing but it came out really nice i think. it has room for improvement as always but over all i like it. any suggestions and critiques are always welcome, take care ya'll
-
MEGABIT nice very nice !!!! like i said before i really like the way you keep the post updated. the long buttons at the ends look very good. if you want to do something a little diferent for the small knots just do a gaucho from a base 5x4 three passes should be good enough to cover the ring knots and if ts too small you can do it in a 7x6. well great job and keep the pictures comming.

nie very nice, super fine lace and that PK looks awsome. i knew you wouldn tstop till you dinished it !!! but well worth it

nice work !! "bronc" (dont know your name sorry) this looks pretty good i like the white and black combo. it's obviously functional. the only thing i would suggest it the way you finish off the knots. i noticed some brown spots on the white buttons i assume you melted them? i made one similar like that in paracord just a diferrent combination of colors and i burried the ends with in the knot, I dabbed it with some supper glue the underside of the strands then pulled them into the knot and trimmed the ends. this helped hide the ends and gave it a cleaner look. dont take this as a negative comment just a suggestion. but over all it looks good as far as where to sell your tack well i have yet to sell anything myself i do it as a hobby and either give it away or keep it. take care and keep it up .
