  1. Thank you for sharing, you have inspired me to pull my copy of the book out and get busy!! The problem is that I have too many projects that are not finished as it is and I promised myself that I would get them done before starting anything new... Thank you again.
  2. Thank you for showing your leatherwork, You do wonderful work!

  3. Very nice looking, what I find interesting is that they look very similar to midevial style turnshoes in the way you have constructed them. Thanks for showing them!
  4. What a great piece! I also have the book and intend to make various pouches but got a little side tracked by the wax tablets and case and had fun re-creating it. Thanks for the insight in the rings... I like the idea of the drawstring for the inner pouch, I was playing with the idea of a flap cover for the bag that was big enough to cover both inner and outer rings. Again great piece! Thank you for sharing.
  5. Very nice, and very creative! For only having 4 tools you are doing very well.
  6. The Dictionary of Leather-Working Tools, c.1750-1950, has a section on tooling. The author says that incising knives were used mainly until the early 1900's and that "This knife, which largely displaced the incising knife, is of American origin of c.1900." pg.198. I have tried to find patented information but haven't had much luck... Hope this helps.

Wax tablets were used for centuries and were stlll being used until the early 19th century in Europe. This project gave me a chance to not only make the case but the tablets and stylus. Beeswax mixed with lampblack is period and creates the writing surface.

Girdle books were used between the 13th and 15th century. Mostly used by clergy to hang from the "girdle" (belt) so that the book was always ready for reading.

I did not try to recreate the book that is inside, opting to use a blank journal.

    Oak leaf box

From the album: Leatherwork By Jana

Carved leather panels were placed on a pre-made box, I liked the results.

All sides of this box are carved and I estimated that 90 hours went into the designing, carving and finishing.

This is still a work in progress... I call it my forever project. This piece was finally finished in the Summer of 2010. I will have to come up with a new "Forever Project"... I do have a couple in mind!

  16. Thanks Harvey, I am looking forward to going and it sounds like it will be rather relaxed. I have a project in the works that might be finished in time to bring along... we'll see.
  17. This will be my first time to go to Wickenburg. I have had the chance to go to Sheridan but it has been several years now. I am looking forward to going, so I'm pinching pennies and stretching the dollars in order to enjoy the merchants. I have seen the list of classes but nothing on activites. Is there usually judging and if so what are the catagories?
  18. Keep going... I would like to see them completed!
  19. Thank you for posting, I have had the honor of getting to visit his shop but it was over ten years ago. Really great to know that he is still around to tell his stories.
  20. Beautiful work! I love the depth you are able to get with your tooling. A question about your construction, what are the tabs on the inside spine area for? Do they help with keeping the cover in place? I have a job for a bible cover coming up soon and your construction of this one interests me.
  21. Very imaginative along with being impressive, your friend is extremely lucky to get this from you. I can tell that this was a labor of love and was well thought out before making it. I really like the way you made the closures work, thank you for sharing.
  22. Very impressive Round-2-It, Bearman:specool: I've seen several, This one is the most elaborate!!
