  1. If I use blue painter's tape the adhesive is relativley weak and does not damage the rough side of the leather.l If I use clear packing tape, it raises a rough nap on the rough side. If i'm lining the piece with lining leather, no biggie. If I'm not lining the piece, use some gum trag and a slicker to smooth it back down.
  2. Did you use Tandy Leather Weld instead or rubber cement? That is a pva white glue. Don't use that. Use rubber cement. Or tape.
  3. I use about 12' of calf or roo lace, Less if I'm using a suede lace. I wax the lace with parrafin, much less gummy than beeswax.
  4. Is that box all leather, or ;leather over a wood core? Lovely carving, as usual.
  5. Don't do it, would be my advice. Or only do it in connection with a bookbinder. My ex-wife took some classes on bookbinding. It's a specialized craft in its own right. I'd let a bookbinder do it.
  6. Two tutorials on this page: http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=11899 http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=19782
  7. I've made 4 bags of hair on cow. Three are all hair on. Two, I just stitched saddle stitching, inside out. No shaving, etc. The third I laced. Drew my line on the back, cut the holes with a 4 in 1 punch and laced with a double loop. The fourth was inlay, Again, no shaving, just stitched away.
  8. I have the aluminum strap cutter. Tandy discontinued it. Very good tool. Mostly, I think,it was discontinued because it was priced at $80 and the wooden one is $20 or less. I am told they do the same thing.
  9. Apart from whether the company is a "legitimate company" I have looked at the product and I am underwhelmed. For example, wallets to coordinate with my shirts. Sorry. I'm a guy. I have one wallet at a time. I do not change wallets to have a wallet that goes with my outfit. My wallet has a bunch of stuff in it. Some day I will buy a new wallet, or, more likely, make myself a new wallet. When I get tired of this one. Or it starts to wear out. Then I will transfer wallets. I will throw a buch of ancient receipts and stuff away. But until that day, I only need one wallet.
  10. Where did you get a pattern for the hats? Or would you share it.
  11. Gives me an idea. What if I make a beer case to carry my guns in?
  12. The Stohlman books on How to Make Leather Cases have detailed instructions for making leather boxes, or covering wood boxes with leather.
  13. I'd probably like it better if the picture were smaller and would fit on the screen.
  14. Good try! And thanks for sharing the pattern.
  15. Isn't that the Sher-Dor Madrasah in Registan Square?

    New Bowl

That's cool. How does one make leather bowls? Are they purely decorative?
  17. In addition to gluing the edges together, try an awl instead of a 4 prong punch.
  18. Thanks for the lovely card, Peter.
  19. Nice work. i hope your friend appreciates it.
  20. I was attempting to be funny, not mean. Sorry myt effort failed and for any offense that anyone took.
  21. I think that if I were going to make a notepad, i'd use paper, or take a papermaking course, instead of using leather. Especially 8-10 oz. If I were making a notepad cover, I'd use leather. but that's probably just me.
  22. Beautiful carving, as usual. You get tremendous depth in your work.
  23. I took it to refer to the Bush Administration's terrorism response as described in Ron Suskind's book.
