  1. Well, tks for the advice, I think I am am a "impulsive buyer", I went to tandy for a tool and a book on stitching and end up with a "russet saddle skirting" (also got the book and tool...) I am making leather armor with a good part of it, but i am pretty sure there is enought for at least 1 or 2 pair of sandale or turnshoes (maybe one pair of each). Is this material strong enought? I was thinking of using old industrial tire of the outer sole (sorry if my english is not quite perfect)
  2. I just got a batch of 13/15 oz veg tan leather (should be thick enough for sole) What could I use to ''seal'' the leather. I was told by a friend never to use veg tan for shoes, it will not resist the sweat and weather. I've seen a lot of nice pieces on this forum, so what are you guys use and how are your creation resist the test of time?
  3. You can find video about everything (well almost) on youtube. The question is are those video any good? When you talk about saddle stitching, does it look like that: another stitch that look interesting: a video on carving so what do you think, are does''good technique''
  4. tks a lot, that explain most of the problems I have.
  5. I made a quick experiment, I want to do color test with a tooled piece but since it was only test I did'nt care much about the tooling. I place my pice of 5/6 oz leather in water and start tooling while it was still very wet. I notice That i can do most of my tooling without a hammer (hand pressure leave a good depth). Does any one work like that? If yes, what are the inconvenients?
  6. I might be a little bit ambitious, I'am trying to learn :drawing, carving, stitching, coloring ,etc all at the same time. The result are far from perfect. This is a case for a blackberry I made. It's made from scrap veg-tan leather ,that's why the symmetry is not perfect. The stitching is made with a speedy stitcher. First experiment with gel antique. The clip came from a old blackberry case, so it respect the minimal distance between the device and the body. All constructive critique are welcome, my goal is to improve
  7. thank for the advise, lots of stuff in that book.
  8. Until recently the only leather work I've done consisted of punching hole and riveting leather. I had modified a pair of vise-grips so they dont leave a mark on the head. I've been thinking about modifing on pair to get a distingtive mark on the rivet. It is a lot faster the hammering, and cheaper then the "official tool" It is useful since i do most of my work when kids are sleeping (bangning noise + sleeping kids= very bad evening)
  9. I am more interested in the north east, from the great lakes to the sea, including present days Vermont, Maine, Ontario and Quebec.
  10. I need help to research native north american armor before the contact with european culture. I've read many reference to raw hide armor, slat and rod armor and some kind of padded leather armor (2 hide, bear or buffalo, stitched together). Any one have visual reference (picture, drawing)?
  11. nice, The shoulder protection are a little to big for my personnal taste. for more info on the lorica: http://www.scribd.com/doc/3961788/Lorica-Segmentata-Volume-I-A-Handbook-of-Articulated-Roman-Plate-Armour
  12. you can also add a minimum of protection: large bracer, kidney belt, upper torso protection a small tool kit would also be nice
  13. a realy neat addition to a allready nice pieces. I notice the older style carving (lineare instead of curve) on the back of the torso. Do you know where I could find reference for this style?
  14. I dont have much experience in leatherworking, but i made a couple of easy pieces I liked. Now I have a new blackberry that required a casing so I figured I make one. I've got a couple of question: first In a another tread I've read: Where should I put this magnet? What kind of lining should I use so I wont scratch the surface? Is molded 8 once to thick for this kind of project?
  15. the tooling is incredible, is the lower (abdominal) part is riveted all the ways or just at the corner? (rigidity or flexibility)
  16. second attempt at tooling and coloring. What do you think? The rune is a personnal composition and the reste of the tooling is based on a viking age writing tablet
  17. there it is, not exactly a showroom piece. I must work on my coloring skill. It is fonctionnall.
  18. I usally line my sword holder with "feutrine" (I am not sure of the correct word in english, but it is artificial felt)
  19. tks for the step by step . The image help a lot. I was searching for a small carving project to begin with and the frog looks like a fun project. Il' post pictures as soon as I finish dying.
  20. The final result look pretty good. Does'nt look like it would restrict mouvement to much The only thing (it might be a personnal preference) is that I would not go in close combat (sword, knife, ...) without protection in the groin area...

  23. Neat, what would normally be worn underneath? a nice tunic would add event more panache to a already nice kit
  24. I am with hivemind, I would'nt buy basic shape at that price. Since you can get a custom finish armor (dyed, treathed, assembled) for lest then the price...
