Ditch the Eco-Flo dye... it's garbage IMHO. I had the same issue not too long ago. I finished a holster (HO leather) and when it came time to wet mold, the dye turned to greenish tint after I soaked it. The leather was not the problem, I had already made a number of holsters with the same leather using Fiebings Pro Oil dye with no issues. No more Eco-Flo for me!

Rayban, thanks! Some black on black shark would look sweeeeet. As for the white stitching, that was the customer's request... not my first choice, but as long as he's paying Katsass, THAT is some slick work... very cool! What leather weight do you use for the top layer?

This was my second attempt at doing inlay work on a holster. This particular holster is for a full size 1911. The inlay is pretty simple... and the customer was extremely happy with the outcome. I'm interested to find out what other methods or types of inlays some of you do? All feedback is welcome

I just finished a holster for one of our local SWAT guys. He had an HK .45 with a TLR-2 on the rail. I don't have any pics at the moment, but the holster is basically a "bucket" with a thumb break. The customer loved it. Personally I thought it was kind of ugly, but it was definitely functional. There was absolutely no molding around the trigger guard... any attempt at retention around the trigger would have made it hard / impossible to holster the weapon. after using your overstich wheel, chuck an awl blade in a drill press and start making holes!

Get a belt of the desired thickness, or cut a few different straps to simulate various sized belts.... then just use those as a reference when determining where to set your snaps, etc.

You might try some Sam Browne studs. They can be found as rivet or screw backs... other than that I can't think on anything you haven't already listed. I'll be interested to hear other's input.

Excellent info! Right now I am using Feiblings Pro Oil dye... I would like to be able to adjust the flow and vary the amount of the dye I'm using. It sounds like the "shop-type" compressor is what I should get. I need one anyway, so I might as well get one that can be used for more than just airbrushing. If I can find a compressor that will air up my tires AND spray dye, THAT would be perfect! On that note, is there any certain size or HP I should look for? Something bigger than "hobby" size but smaller than a "industrial" type? Thanks again for the help!

For those of you that airbrush your holsters, what kind of set up do you use? I'm starting from scratch here so... What kind of compressor works best? What kind of airbrush kit would you recommend? Do you dilute your dyes, finishes, etc when airbrushing? Any info to help me get started would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

What kind of leather goods are you making? Not sure about the salt water, but I would definite seal the inside (flesh side). I personally like to use Super Sheen Spray on the outside of my holsters and a 50/50 mix of Acrylic Resolene and water on the inside. YMMV

Here's my little tip of the day - I found that if make two TINY snips on either side of the snap posts ( the part that's being pushed down to secure the snap pieces) the snaps will set MUCH easier. I was having bad luck with my snaps being off center and just plain ugly. When I give the post part a little snip with my shears it insures that my snaps won't end up sideways or off center... as far as I can tell, it does not compromise the strength of the snap. I still plan to add the Press'n Snap tool to my arsenal, but for now this is the method I use.
