  1. Dave, perhaps you can help me. I joined this forum to learn how to photograph leatherwork but got side tracked. I bought myself a couple of books and am now learning how to design and carve the Sheridan style. I still have to learn how to photograph leatherwork.

    Regards, TapTaptap

  2. Congatulations Spinner, of course now you are going to hear "stop that tapping you'll wake the baby". Best wishes to you and your good lady. TapTapTasp
  3. Welcome to the forum chiefport. I noticed you visited my profile recently. Is there anything I can do to help you? My philosophy is the same. I am passing on my knowledge through my website - myleatherwork.com. regards, TapTapTap

  4. G'Day Mate, Welcome to the forum. I have used Birdsall's for over 20 years and their service is highly recommended. Ask to speak to Tracy. Another source worth trying is www.nswleather.com.au. I have a site bookmarked called www.aussiecrafts.com.au and in their section for leathercraft they list over half a dozen suppliers from around australia. Worth a try. regards, TapTapTap

  7. Jesse, I might have what you are looking for in page 2 of my gallery. The front part of the Ipad case is moulded. You could quite easily add a section to the back and attach shoulder straps to make it into a shoulder bag/Ipad cover combination. Al Stohlman's book is an excellent resource. regards, TapTapTap
  8. Hello Diane, I noticed you visited my profile recently. If you have any questions on the work in my gallery please ask. That's what this forum is all about. regards, TapTapTap

  9. G'day Jock, welcome to the forum. Looking forward to seeing some images of your braiding. regards, TapTapTap from the NSW Central Coast
  10. Vince, the antique dyes we get here in Australia are not as thick as Fiebings paste so it is easier to get results like mine. I haven't used Fiebings for over 40 years so am not aware of what you could use to dilute it.I suggest you post your problem on the appropriate forum and take advice from members who actually use the product. Regards, TapTapTap

This is our first attempt at coloring leather instead of just applying antique dye.

This is 'our' first attempt at using colours instead of various shades of antique dye. I did the carving and my wife did the colouring. The technique she used was to antique the whole picture and then using a damp cloth wipe off all excess dye except for the border. She then used her acrylic folk art paints and in some areas spirit dyes to achieve the result. We realize we have a lot to learn so I have signed up to do the course with Paul Burnett. We would appreciate any comment. regards TapTapTap
  13. Thanks for your comments mate. She has been my partner for 49 years and I still listen to her comments. As a matter of fact she is working on a pattern for another bag at the moment. I will keep you posted. regards, taptaptap
  14. Hi there Vince, thanks for your comments. I have never used oil on any of my work. The majority is antique. I use a brush and wipe excess off with a lint free cloth.

This handbag was designed by my wife. The handle is made from 2.5mm leather and the rest from garment leather.

One of my earlier projects. This Tandy pattern was very popular some years ago.

  17. This is one of my favorite projects. It is from a very old Tandy pattern.

  19. John, The thickness of the marble you have is adequate for just about anything to do with leatherwork. The main thing you must do is ensure the slab is sitting on a smooth level surface so that you don't get any movement. With a small size slab ( 9 X 12 ) I would make a false top on my workbench to make it level with the slab. This will help you when you are carving a large project. I got my slab of marble (18 X 18 X 2) from a stone mason who made head stones. They quite often have off cuts. I used to tell people that the underside had all the details carved on it except for the date. But then I have a weird sense of humour. regards, TapTapTap

Pattern is taken from a 1982 Japanese Leathercraft Designs book.

  21. Thanks for the comments folks. I don't know if age has anything to do with it BUT I forgot to add the details about the bag. The handbag pattern is from a Japanese Leathercraft Pattern book I purchased in 1982. All the instructions are in Japanese so I used my experience to work out the size of the gusset. The bag is carved from 2.5mm leather from Brazil and is lined with dark brown pigskin split. The edge braiding took 22 metres of 3mm kangaroo thong. I used the "double cordovan" braid. The dimensions of the bag are width = 15 inches at widest point, Height = 12 inches to top of handles and width of gusset = 2.5 inches. regards from TapTaptap
  22. Hi there Whit30, I have a copy of "Design Artistry" (large sheets in a portfolio) and the book "Leather Secrets" published in 1976. I quite often go to them for a corner pattern or other unusual design. I would like to see your work using these patterns. Unfortunately, I did not photograph my work in the early days.
