  1. Ryan I use a set of the ol fashioned manual sheep shears and then touch up with scissors. Greg
  2. I find Rush Limbaugh and Micheal Savage very soothing while I work. More so in these dark times. Greg
  3. Gilham's of San Francisco had a patented pinked edge on some of thier saddles. I have seen specimans of thiers where pretty much every edge on the saddle was scalloped. If memory serves me correct they were bought out by L.D. Stone who later merged with Main & Winchester in 1905. Greg
  4. Panhandle Leather in Amarillo sells it as well. Greg
  5. does that mean them rotary cutters are a girlie thing? Greg
  6. use whatever you want! finger's will grow back. just remember " a man who will rent a pig will stop at nothing." Greg
  7. I would add that if you are looking at any of the above machines make sure the one you pick takes the 190 needle system. If you get one with the 135 needle system you will run into problems doing britchin and breast collars. Greg
  8. Please keep in mind you can also use a solid piece instead of laminating. Traditionaly white oak is used. Keith Wilson steams his and I believe Arron Fandek is now using a solid piece he is steaming. Greg
  9. Brush of the mold from the surface and then wipe the sadlle down with plain old white vineger to kill the mold spores. Greg
  10. Alan you can also take the pattern after you have drawn it and hold it up to a mirror. Looking at a reverse image of a pattern in the mirror can help the eye pick up details you missed looking at it from the first side. Greg
  11. Alan once you have your drawing done if you are curious as to how it will look try using a pencil to shade all your background areas in on the drawing. This will allow you to better see what you have drawn and how much background you have etc. Greg
  12. I still have the Landis if you are interested. Greg
  13. I believe this was a company run by Ellis Barnes who is now in Elfrida Arizona. It would be hard to "patch" that hole, putting a pad in would be more viable. greg
  14. does it have the "NiggerBoy Brand" trademark on it. "NiggerBoy" was a famous racehorse of which J.G. Read adopted as thier logo until in the 1930's or so the federal trade commission forced them to quit using this logo due to it being misconstrued as a racial thing. If your saddle bears this mark it would enhance it's value. As for the stirrups there were different ones available and one would have to narrow down the period a little more to determine what it might have been sold with. Greg
  15. Most saddlemaker's buy the stirrups made up but there are a few who cover thier own and then there are a couple who actually even bend thier own wood. For the most part we just buy them from people who specalize in stirrups. Greg
  16. to bend it you need to steam the wood. Greg
  17. Why not go to the source. Try Bork Saddlery Hardware in Pendleton Or. or Boise Foundry in Melba Idaho. Greg
  18. Chris I have a pattern that I use for shape. to start I run an awl up from the bottom in the center of the seat against the fork then turn the tree right side up. This hole is front center, i then draw my cut lines. i do not go right out to the edge of the bar. instead of cutting into a square corner i use a 3/8 drill bit to make my corners then cut out from the holes. hope this helps. Greg
  19. Why not just phone Rick Bean and ask him what process he used being's its his saddle you are using for an example? Greg
  20. The rotary punch weaver sells is manufactured by randall and is a quality made piece of equipment. I know a gentleman here in Idaho that has one that he might consider selling. It would not be cheap but it would be cheaper than a new one. He bought it new and it has been looked after. Greg
  21. Brent I have a digital camera and what not but due to my daughter's medical condition we choose to home school her. The school supplied us with a high tech computer this fall when she started but we are not supposed to put any personal programs on it. Our old computer is sitting in the garage, we will hook it up when this computer goes back at the end of the school year and then will have the ability to load photo's. Greg
  22. Ed i haven't got the required technology to do photos currently. Greg
