What do you use to trim your shearlings?
greg gomersall replied to RyanCope's topic in Saddle Construction
Ryan I use a set of the ol fashioned manual sheep shears and then touch up with scissors. Greg -
I find Rush Limbaugh and Micheal Savage very soothing while I work. More so in these dark times. Greg

The best all around machine
greg gomersall replied to yotebuster1200's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I would add that if you are looking at any of the above machines make sure the one you pick takes the 190 needle system. If you get one with the 135 needle system you will run into problems doing britchin and breast collars. Greg -
Please keep in mind you can also use a solid piece instead of laminating. Traditionaly white oak is used. Keith Wilson steams his and I believe Arron Fandek is now using a solid piece he is steaming. Greg

Nasty surprise in the Tack room
greg gomersall replied to Curbstrap2's topic in Saddle Identification, Restoration & Repair
Brush of the mold from the surface and then wipe the sadlle down with plain old white vineger to kill the mold spores. Greg -
Alan you can also take the pattern after you have drawn it and hold it up to a mirror. Looking at a reverse image of a pattern in the mirror can help the eye pick up details you missed looking at it from the first side. Greg
-
Alan once you have your drawing done if you are curious as to how it will look try using a pencil to shade all your background areas in on the drawing. This will allow you to better see what you have drawn and how much background you have etc. Greg

Question about saddle age/maker and help on repair
greg gomersall replied to MyGalAl's topic in General Saddlery Discussion
I believe this was a company run by Ellis Barnes who is now in Elfrida Arizona. It would be hard to "patch" that hole, putting a pad in would be more viable. greg -

J G Read and Brothers Saddle
greg gomersall replied to reid's topic in Saddle Identification, Restoration & Repair
does it have the "NiggerBoy Brand" trademark on it. "NiggerBoy" was a famous racehorse of which J.G. Read adopted as thier logo until in the 1930's or so the federal trade commission forced them to quit using this logo due to it being misconstrued as a racial thing. If your saddle bears this mark it would enhance it's value. As for the stirrups there were different ones available and one would have to narrow down the period a little more to determine what it might have been sold with. Greg -
Most saddlemaker's buy the stirrups made up but there are a few who cover thier own and then there are a couple who actually even bend thier own wood. For the most part we just buy them from people who specalize in stirrups. Greg
-
to bend it you need to steam the wood. Greg

Solid Brass Rigging rings
greg gomersall replied to oldtimer's topic in Saddle Supplies, Tools & Trees
Why not go to the source. Try Bork Saddlery Hardware in Pendleton Or. or Boise Foundry in Melba Idaho. Greg -
Chris I have a pattern that I use for shape. to start I run an awl up from the bottom in the center of the seat against the fork then turn the tree right side up. This hole is front center, i then draw my cut lines. i do not go right out to the edge of the bar. instead of cutting into a square corner i use a 3/8 drill bit to make my corners then cut out from the holes. hope this helps. The rotary punch weaver sells is manufactured by randall and is a quality made piece of equipment. I know a gentleman here in Idaho that has one that he might consider selling. It would not be cheap but it would be cheaper than a new one. He bought it new and it has been looked after. Greg

Brent I have a digital camera and what not but due to my daughter's medical condition we choose to home school her. The school supplied us with a high tech computer this fall when she started but we are not supposed to put any personal programs on it. Our old computer is sitting in the garage, we will hook it up when this computer goes back at the end of the school year and then will have the ability to load photo's. Greg
