Thanks for the reply particle. You make some good points. UPDATE: Taking Lobos advice, I contacted the distributor I bought this leather from. My original order was for a double shoulder of #2 leather in 6/7 ounce. I was informed 2 days later that they did not have that, and would replace in with #1 leather at no upcharge, and also bump it to 7/8 ounce leather since that is what they had. Being new to this, I thought that #1 would be better than #2, since it cost a bit more. I guess that is not the case. At any rate, I called the distributor today and told them what had happened and that I was unhappy with this piece of leather. The person I spoke with apologized for the mix up and is hand picking me a piece of leather and guarantees that I will be happy with the quality. They are exchanging this flat across and even covering return shipping for the piece I bought, which has had a bit of material removed from it. They are even including at no cost a sample of the Hermann Oaks leather in an attempt to get me hooked no doubt I will post back when I receive the replacement material. Appreciate the responses! Thanks for the comments ! BConklin: I spent some time reading the burnishing tutorial thread, lots of good info in there, certainly worth the time to read through it. I did it all by hand with a wooden stick since I dont own a dremel or a drill press. I did use some sandpaper on it prior to burnishing which seems to have had a great amount of influence on the final product. Big O: Rub and Rub and Rub until your elbow hurts, then do it some more. I used only a horn creaser and the same wood slicker I used to finish the edges. Actually that 9 dollar wood slicker from Tandy has proved itself quite useful.

I do own one of the Damascus Al Stohlman trim knives, I just need to get the hang of using it due to it's different handling than the Exacto that I learned with. Thanks everyone for the replies.

Mods: If this question would fit better in a different forum, please feel free to relocate it. Maybe just let me know where it went I bought a #1 Import double shoulder, 7-8 ounce, from a supplier who advertises on this forum. I've been using the 6-7 ounce Tandy single shoulders until now and was excited to get this new stuff in, as it is the largest, not to mention priciest, piece of leather I have purchased to date. To me, it's a sign that things are going well. Anyway, I cut some pieces out for some holsters I have sold and wow, is this stuff tough. Even with a brand new blade on the exacto knife it took me 4 hard cuts to make it through. I usually run a groove on the flesh side of the leather when I stitch on a trim piece or something, and I can barely get my groover to make a dent in the stuff. All in all, I'm a bit disappointed with the purchase. I expected it to be better stuff than the Tandy I've been buying but so far... not so much. So I guess my real question is, is this the quality I should expect from the leather that I bought, or did I maybe get a questionable piece? Thank you for any advice. Dan

Just finished this one up today. Stitch lines are getting better as is my edge finishing. Neither are perfect yet, but I'm happy with my improvement so far and know it will only get better. I bought one also when I ordered some other stuff from Springfield. Its a nice piece of hide, I really like the texture of it, both front and back. Even the color is nice. Now I just have to decide what to make with it.

Building my first ever IWB holster and looking for some input on what to use over the dye. The dye in question is actually Fiebings Mahogany Stain. I have used in the past on my OWB holsters Satin Sheen, Super Sheen, And Saddle Lac. Would one of those work well enough on IWB or is there something better for this application. Thank you for any advice! Dan

Bronson, Is the leather wet or dry when you sand it, and do you use a drum on a dremel or regular sandpaper, or something else entirely. I've tried just about everything and only had marginal luck sanding the edges.

I keep seeing "Duncans" come up but a Google search reveals nothing useful. Does this place still exist? Im looking for some 3" L frame and N frame revolver molds to make a few holsters with. Rings doesnt seem to offer those models. thanks!

I like the tooling work on it. As far as grooving the back side. I might be doing it wrong, but I lay out my front stitch groove, then use an awl to poke completely through all the leather pieces on every mark left by the marker wheel. then I flip the piece over and use a freehand groover to make the back groove.

Looks good. Do you still need to groove the backside for the thread to lay in with that machine?

Thanks for the idea ramrod. I sort of forgot I posted this. The day ended up saved by a combination of swivel knife, brass bar, and a french beveler. Iended up scoring the leather around the diameter of the grommet, compressing the leather fibers with a correctly sized brass rod, then beveling the center holse somewhat. The grommet sat in a little deep but thats OK for this instance. thanks again!

I was surprised to then find you here when I signed up last month. Your holster alone was responsible for kindling my interest in leather. Thank you for that as well!

I need to make a double mag holster for double stack 45ACP mags. I would like to do these with an adjustable tension screw. But dont know how. I've seen companies either use rubber hose or rubber grommets for the "cushion" device. Where I'm lost at is what fasteners to use, and how do I keep the head of the screw from ripping through the leather. Any advice on the proper hardware would be awesome. Also, do most people use a flat back for these and only form the front piece, or would the traditional "pancake" design be acceptable here?? I've done mag carriers before, but never a double, and certainly none with a tension adjustment.. Thanks you much!
