I agree on the you get what you pay for in tools. You arelooking at spending $20 on a maybe tool that is 1/3 of the way to the Tandy. The other option would be to get single punches you would use a maul with untilyou can afford the Tandy. As for sound deadening the first thing i would do ismove off of the card table. You would be better off putting the marble slab ona carpeted floor. May sound strange but it should be less noisy than the cardtable. If you could get some cheap used lumber you could build a simple solidwork table till you could get something better. I built my first work bench outof pallets not easy but it was solid. Do not be afraid to look around as youmight find you can cobble something out of a couple of old tables to makesomething that will work Tlong Think Positive Be Positive

I like the slide aspects here you could also extend this all theway around and use a flap that folds under the device at the opening preventingit from falling out that way. It may work better on some than others but thenyou could cut out for buttons and whatever you might need but still have the supportall the way around. Tlong Think Positive Be Positive

At the very least you want to get a drawing of the outside of bothfeet. You will use this to create the bottom or sole of the Moc. Depending onhow the foot is formed will tell you which way to move forward. This I thinkyou will find to be a fun and rewarding project and we all hope you takepictures of your work and her smile. Could look at doing them in a mechanical engineering way.Where you run the lines using an “Ames Lettering guide” and a hard lead pencil. On paper I use an H6 lead to create a very faint line for lettering not surewhat would be good on leather. I would draw the lines and a guide for theletters you want so you can get the spacing down. I would also be possible todo this on transfer film and then use a stylist to transfer it like a patternas well. The idea is get the letters the size and spaced the way you want thentrust yourself to cut them. Tlong Think Positive Be Positive

As an owner of nothing but Craftools i cannot attest tothe quality of the more expensive tools out there. I have been buying Craftoolssince 1977. I have not had a tool fail, bend or otherwise become unusable. Yessome of the chrome has come off a couple but they are still very useable. Wouldit be nice to have the more expensive tools: only if they do something the lessexpensive tools cannot? Look at the tool and what you intend on using it forthen compare it to other tools that will do the same thing and pick the one youlike then look at price. Understand a $50 tool may not perform any better thana $5 tool if it is not the right tool for the task. tlong Think Positive Be Positive

What type of lighting are you using? I have a swing arm light over my work area so i can move it around to remove shadows and provide the best light to see a given operation. One other thing if the leather is cased when you trace the line should be pretty easy to see if you remove the shadows from your hand.. tlong Think Positive Be Positive

Another resource would be a counter top shop. If you goto the place where they are cutting the stone you can get leftover pieces cheapor free. I went for the expensive custom cut and got a 5' X24" X 2"for $100 which will be the top to my new workbench now that my Federal Job isnot getting in the way. tlong Think Positive Be Positive

I am using the pan of wax with craftaids. Once i have remelted the pan and it has cooled i take a craftaid transefer it to the fresh wax and fill up any other space with other craftaid or tarnsfers i am getting ready to do frezze it then practice and repeat. THis has helped my carving and not cost a lot tlong think positve be positive

for first and second [rojects you are off to a very good start. The main thing i saw would be when walking the tool try to be more consistant with space and pressure from the maul so you will get fewer tooling marks as you go. THis iwll come with practice but you are off to a very fine start. Keep up the work and post pictures. tlong Think Positive Be Positive

Does anyone happen to know when Tandy started making Doodle sheets? I have a couple of Tandycraft pattern sheets from 1949 labeled 54, and from 1952. These things are huge easy something like 40" X 52" most are printed on both sides. Also does anyone happen to have a Doodle page index? thank you tlong Think Positive Be Positive
