  1. In my experience 1-2oz veg tan is pretty much impossible to find. Lowest Ive gotten is 2/3oz from Wickett & Craig and Goliger Leather (split Hermann Oak) but youll be buying a full side. I hear Waterhouse will split down too but havent tried them yet.
  2. "Companies" like this irk me because you can tell they dont neccesarily care what their business is as long as its a business. They just decided on leather wallets. Start a Kickstarter, reguritate some bullshit about what a quality leather product should be, and have someone else make it. They need stupid tag lines like that because they personally have no idea what they are doing.
  3. You can buy Blanchard tools from fineleatherworking.com which is USA based. Those tools are the cream of the crop.
  4. I receieved an e-mail from Tannery Row noting their new ordering procedures. Any orders under 2000sq ft now go to: Jon Crocilla joncrocilla@thetanneryrow.com Tannery Row - Horween Leather Sales & Customer Service 847.452.9123
  5. Olga. Yes it is still available. That would be a bit of a problem (the distance). Im not sure about shipping things like this but if there is interest I would knock the price down a a little bit to help out with shipping cost.
  6. Down to $650. Come on east coasters!
  7. You need to address social media further. Facebook is a start but you should also be promoting via Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram if possible.
  8. I have been getting the warning for a while and I made sure they knew about it last time I inquired about prices. They suggested I just try a different browser but that isnt the answer you want to hear. They need to have someone address that immediately. If you ignore the browser warnings you are opening up your computer to infection just a heads up.
  9. For sale is my Consew 225 walking foot sewing machine. This machine comes with a brand new Servo motor (CSM-550) for optimal speed control and quiet operation (perfect for working in an apartment or home). The machine was also professionally serviced 2 weeks ago where the following items were replaced: hook, bobbin case, throat plate, presser foot, and pulley belt. In addition you will receive a small drawer full of accessories like regular and leather point needles, bobbins, tools, instruction manuals, and other odds and ends. It comes with the white lamp but not the black one shown in the photograph. The white lamp works it just needs to be connected to a plug/power source. The machine is awesome but I am primarily a hand-stitcher and looking to give this thing to a good home where it will be utilized. Machine is located in Philadelphia, PA and local pick-up preferred. Willing to negociate delivery within a reasonable distance. Looking to get $800.
  10. I recently took my machine in for a service (new bobbin case, hook, etc) and got it back and setup yesterday morning. I suppose to test they put their own needle (size 22) in my machine so when I set it back up this morning I swapped my leather point needle back in place (size 20 / #92 thread). My problem is now the needle is shredding the thread right at the hole opening. I removed and re-inserted the needle a million times also trying brand new ones and the needles that came with my machine and its the same thing. Sometimes I can complete a full line or 2 and sometimes it starts shredding right away. I made sure the long groove was to the left and double-checked my threading each time. The thread is also very difficult to pull at the end when I am removing my piece from under the presser foot. I have to use my hand to pull some slack at the top of the machine so I can get it out of there. Any insight on what I should check? On a possibly unrelated note: I also had the needle literally get stuck in the leather and get pulled out of the needle slot 2 times while sewing 2 pieces of 2/3oz veg tan. I did have some adhesive that may not have dried completely so Im not sure I can link it to the above problem.
  11. Coming from the world of handstitching Im used to neatly tucking the ends of my finished thread and now getting used to machine stitching. I do a lot of natural veg tan and white thread and not really loving the "burnt end" of using a lighter to finish. Does anyone do anything differently for a nice neat finish?
  12. Thanks guys. Got me on the road to finding what I need. Googling left toe presser is showing me exactly what I want. That with an edge guide looks like exactly what I want.
  13. Hello all. Starting to get the hang of my Consew 225 and realizing some limitations with myself and the machine setup (mostly myself). My problem is I have a REALLY tough time seeing the needle and where it is puncturing the leather even if I gauge a line to follow. By the time I notice Im going off track Im struggling to pull it straight again and it looks bad. Im working along a 1/8" edge on small wallets so its very noticeable when I mess up. I was watching some videos on youtube and noticed some people using a single foot setup with an edge guide and Im interested in trying that. Even without the edge guide just having that open space where I can monitor the needle placement better seems like it would help a lot. Should that work fine with my machine? Any help is appreciated! Edit: And just in case my terminology is off and that doesnt make sense, any suggestions for a setup where I could better see whats going under the needle and work with a 1/8" margin that would be great.
  14. CowboyBob you were right about the improper threading causing the problem. I didnt notice I missed one of the guides when re-threading. Seems to be working good now. Learned a lot from that mishap!
  15. Thanks Bob. I managed to figure out how to set the stitch length but still jamming up. The bobbin thread takes up on the first attempt but as soon as I start sewing the material just stays in one place and jams back up. I will attempt to re-thread the top thread. Do you have any tips for the bobbin threading? Maybe I am doing that wrong.
  16. Sorry for starting yet another thread, it really is a last resort! Ok well I was attempting to adjust my stitch length while test sewing some scraps of denim and ran into a huge problem. I pushed in the right button and turned the hand-wheel to a number I wanted and let go of the button assuming that was what I needed to do. I put my denim in to stitch and it turned into a tangled mess. I cut out all the thread and opened the bobbin case and removed all the jams in there. There was a bunch wrapped around the bobbin case itself. I attempted to re-thread and every time I try to take up the thread from the bobbin it just turns into knots after about 3 handwheel revolutions. I checked out the stitch length gauge and it looks like whenever I turn the handwheel with or without holding down the button it is always changing the number. How do I get it to "set" and stop changing length? Any help is appreciated this is frustrating!
  17. Thanks Gregg. Managed to figure it out after a couple attempts. Cool to see someone else from Philly! Will check out your website when I need some supplies!
  18. I got my Consew 225 up and running with a Servo motor installed (clutch motor was way too loud) and now Im just sewing random scraps to get the hang of this thing. I ran into my first problem but seems like it should be an easy fix. When I finish my sewing and Im ready to snip the thread it says to bring needle to highest position, lift presser foot, and draw the piece back and to the left until there is clearance to snip. However when I do this I cant move the piece the thread is really tight. I pulled a little too hard earlier and snapped the thread and had to re-thread the top one. Can someone help me with what Im doing wrong?
  19. Thanks for the response. I guess Ill stick with Nylon thread if its stronger.
  20. I made a post about a week ago about buying a machine and ended up with the suggested Consew 225. Im trying to get up to speed with everything and having some trouble figuring out my thread options. The woman I bought the machine off of left some nylon upholstery thread on for me to practice but Im wondering if I can run linen thread through here? Would that be suitable for sewing heavy canvas to leather, heavy denim to leather, and just leather to leather? If so, what sizes would I be looking at? I ask because thats what Im most used to from hand-stitching. Thanks for any advice!
  21. Hello all. Im a long time hand stitcher getting the itch for a sewing machine. Ive been searching the forums but all of this is still really new to me and a bit overwhelming. Ive noticed a Singer 31-15 and Consew 225 in my local classifieds and want to know if either would be suitable for my needs. My goods are almost exclusivley wallets and card holders using 2/3oz veg tan or chromexcel. That could possibly jump up to 4/5 oz chromexcel for bags. Would either of those sewing machines work for me? Obviously the Singer is a bit cheaper so that would be nice but that isnt the end all be all of my decision. I am also open to modifications if need be. Any help is appreciated!
