  1. Would it make sense to use kangaroo lace 1/8 or larger in this case or should I consider cutting some of my 6/7 oz latigo as the tie part? I guess - what is typically used for the tie is my real question. Thanks again!
  2. That sure is a nice and simple method. I wonder though if I would need to re-tighten before each use, or is it more permanent than that? Are these used to hold heavy weight on horses and will hold with over 300lbs? Thanks!
  3. Hello, Good point! - Well What I am trying to do is replace where one might normally use stitching to hold a buckle in place - or snaps if it is a removable buckle. It is just a one piece leather belt, so where the end of it folds back over the buckle then onto itself needs to be secured. Here's an image - basically instead of these rivets to hold it together I want a simple lacing to hold it together that wont let loose. Thanks!
  4. Hello, I was wondering if there is a good/simple method for lacing the end of a belt together to hold the buckle in? I need something that is very strong and will withstand the test of time. I was thinking possibly of doubling up on the lacing. In this case would you lace a boxstitch pattern? How would you finish it so the lace doesn't just come unravelled ? Thanks!
  5. Hello, I am trying to max out the height of my presser foot while sewing multiple layers of leather on the Consew 206rb-5. I am wondering if it is safe to just follow the manual on that one under 'Adjusting the Lift of the Alternating Presser Feet' ? Will this mess with needle timing or anything? Any other tricks to max out the height? Thanks!
  6. Hello, I am working on the tensioning of my consew 206rb-5 I have two images here, one of the top side and one of the bottom. To me - a novice on a machine like this - the top is looking good, but the bottom thread appearance seems off? My first thought is to tighten tension for the top thread? It is already pretty tight though - enough that it is very difficult to pull the piece out when the stitch is doen, I have to manually pull some thread from the tensioner then my leather can be removed from below the needle. Thanks!
  7. Ok good to know. I changed the needle out with another 22 (even though it was fairly fresh to begin with). The fraying stopped for now- I may have scraped the needle in the process of multiple jams when setting everything up. Thank you much!
  8. Ok I got it figured out now - the needle was put in 180 degrees off plus the bobbin was loaded backwards. Now it is sewing great....but I am noticing a tiny bit of frayed thread on some stitches. Could that be due to the needle size, maybe a 23 would help that? Thanks
  9. Hello, I am setting up my consew 206rb-5 to handle some 138 thread with a 22 needle. I am having an issue with the top thread getting caught below somewhere on the top of the bobbin case or holder or who knows, but it will only do maybe a stitch or two then start shredding. Bobbin thread seems fine though. - I did thread the needle left to right - I am holding thread tight for first few stitches - Bobbin is thread so when you pull it rotates counter clockwise. -Tensions seem ok, but who knows Any ideas? One other weird thing that may or may not be related. Even without this thread problem (without thread in the machine) the handwheel is very hard to operate. I usually have to put my foot a little on the pedal while using my hand to pull the wheel. Does that seem a bit odd? Thanks for the help!
  10. Hello, I am wondering if anyone has used Weaver's footpress - the MT900. I have the Heritage one and like it a lot and need one more, but thought I might look into the MT900. It fits the automatic rivet hopper which would be a plus. Does it have the same throat depth? Any other info anyone has on how it compares to the Heritage footpress? Thanks!
  11. Hello, I was wondering if anyone has a good way of tracking raw material inventory such as hardware and leather usage? Ideally I was thinking of an online based program that also serves as an order manager that will automatically deduct inventory ...but maybe that's overkill! Anyhow I just eyeball it right now - but wondering what y'all do, small or big shops. Thanks!!
  12. Hello, I was wondering if anyone on here has a good, fast and accurate toolset for branding names into leather. I have multiple customers that want branded names and need a quick way to switch out type, that also heats up fast. Currently I use a set by LW Leather - but I find that the type will not sit straight, or buckles when you tighten it. Also the branding mark seems a bit inconsistent. Are there any more standard solutions, even high-end solutions for this type of thing? Thanks!
  13. Thanks Ray - yeah, let me know how it works out for you. I am a little confused on the parts - can you give part numbers instead? Thanks!
  14. Sold! Yep - those should work with an adaptor. Thanks!
  15. I do have the ligne 20 snap dies - but what I need are the ones for the smaller spring snaps or glove snaps. Ones like these: http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/search/searchresults/1249-04.aspx
  16. I checked them out - but looks like they only carry plastic templates. I am looking for the metal die attachments that go into the press - or did I miss something on their store site?
  17. Hello, I am wondering if anyone knows where to buy a spring snap die set that fits into the Tandy handpress or Weaver Heritage footpress? The spring snaps or glove snaps I am using are the Tandy kind so they are a bit different than Universal or others. Thanks!
  18. Thanks for the ideas everyone!
  19. The bar stock is definitely an option - I was just hoping for something more like a hand press, or hand tool like a modified set of pliers. I know they have something like this for a wrench but the mouth is too small.
  20. Hello, I am making a few small cases that need to be riveted on the sides. The cases are pretty small so my rivet machine (the heritage foot press from Weaver) wont get into that small of a hole. It will work great for bigger bags - but these small things just wont fit. Anyone have a great tool idea or option for setting rivets inside small bags or pouches? I am using double capped rivets, but I guess it doesn't matter if the inside doesn't turn out pretty. Thanks!
  21. Hello, I was wondering if anyone here knows about the difference in quality between a Schwabe clicker press and an Atom clicker press? Are they basically the same machine and both can be trusted? Thanks!
  22. Interesting! I am also having the problem where the leather dries and curls a bit too much. Looks like it even did that after I oiled a moist piece. Is there a way to prevent that by creating some sort of even drying technique?
  23. How about if the leather dries out in front of the fan to the point where it is hard? Should I add moisture back into the leather before oiling?
  24. Hello, I just started dip dyeing my leather and I set it out to dry in front of a fan. I am wondering how dry it needs to be before oiling it? Once I left the leather in front of the fan too long it seems and the leather became pretty stiff and very dry. Is it ok to oil with a light amount of moisture or does this repel the oil from even penetration? Thanks!
