I would venture to say his material costs are half that if not less. Dave owns the tannery, and buys other supplies in bulk. $250 and you're paying retail. Add in labor cost and bet he is around $250 as well. Good point about the $800 bags. Just think about what they're making.

I actually own a Saddleback bag. I thought it was the greatest thing when I bought it, and now it is getting ready to go on eBay. What really turned me off was all the constant traveling Dave does. Africa multiple times a year, and a bunch of other locations. That's when I realized he's making a KILLING on these. Any of you have a guess? I don't know the exact number, but I am guessing around 100% markup on these bags, so half the price is margin. It's probably higher than that. What are your thoughts? What do you think a large Saddleback briefcase costs to make?

I can get CS Osborne tools of any kind. I work for a Distributor and CS Osborne is one of our vendors. If you need any tools from CS Osborne, reply with the UPC code and I will get you a price. Buyer pays true shipping cost. Not trying gouge the community here, just want to give people an opportunity to save some $. For those who are skeptical, I will give a few examples of prices: Draw Gauge - $56 English Point Punches 1" - $33 Head Knife #70 - $52 Some items are a better deals than others. More you buy the more you would save. Reply if interested.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I want to make wallets, belts, guitar straps, rifle slings, messenger bags and duffel bags. Is there one machine that can handle all these? I was thinking Cowboy 3200, but I would love some input. There's a Techsew matine that is pretty similar. Not trying to hijack this thread, but would love some input.

Yellow/orange Backpack
BigGriff replied to MonicaJacobson's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I'm in Cumming. Haven't been to the Tandy in a long time. Need to get over there, but it's good to see someone local. I wish there was a leather craft group around here. -

Why the straight cuts around the round forms?

I like it. What kind of leather? Did you hand sew? What does the inside look like? -
Small Leather Tray
BigGriff replied to hunio's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I would be very interested in how you make these. I have always wanted to make my own valet/tray, but I have trouble getting it to look the way I want. I do not want to copy your design. In my mind, I would like something bigger with more angles on the sides. -
I'm also in the Atlanta area. Cumming to be exact.

Looking to unload some leather hides, tools, and other miscellaneous stuff such as leather dyes and glues. I have a bunch of stuff. Looking for a local sale. I live in Cumming, GA, about 30-40 miles north of Atlanta, GA. I will be putting together a list of stuff soon, but trying to gauge some interest to see if there is anybody in the area. Reason I am selling is I am moving and have a baby on the way. I would rather this stuff to go to someone who is going to use it now. I may not be able to for some time. Feel free to shoot me an email. allen.griffin1@gmail.com

I do not know how I missed this, but is this machine still available? I am very familiar with Opelika, AL as I grew up right down the road in Phenix City. Let me know, maybe we can work out a deal.

I have attached photos of some valets/catchalls. The sides on the one are nice and flat, while the other are bowed out some. I understand they are assembled differently, but I would like to be able to create flat sides.
-
Trying to start with a simple project, and I figured a catch-all is as easy as it can get. However, I am having one problem. After I make the cut on the corners and get ready to rivet the flaps together, the sides are not flat. They kind of bow outward. I do not want them to be like that. Any suggestions on how to make a perfectly square catch-all with straight sides???

I've posted on a few topics and even started a couple of topics, but I wanted to say hello to everyone. This site has been very helpful and is an amazing resource for beginners. Also, I'm looking for someone in the greater Atlanta area with a leather sewing machine to teach me how to use one. I could reimburse you for your time. Thanks for a great place to learn. Allen

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I will be heading to Home Depot tomorrow to find a straight edge. I also like the idea of using a stylus before cutting. I will be using that technique.

Just got a side from Zach White. I am making a guitar strap for my brother. This is my first time doing something like this. So my question is, how do you guys straighten the edges? I have a strap cutter, scissors and a utility knife. Does anybody have a quick, easy way to do this. I guess I could just use a ruler and hope it comes out straight, but I am hoping someone has a better method. Thanks in advance.

Making a wallet for my Dad, who is a big Bama fan. I have bough the dye for coloring, but I could use some help before I get to coloring. I plan on sketching the logo to the thin, transfer paper (not really sure what it's called) and then transfer it to the leather. After this what should I do? Should I attempt to add some depth to the logo by carving and then paint the dye on? Or should I just paint the logo with the dye? If some of you think I could add depth to the logo, what type of tools would I need? Modeling tools? I am not even sure what tools to use, so any suggestions would be more than welcome. Love the site and all the information it provides. Thanks. Allen

I have no idea how he did it, but I have an idea that it this effect was created by heat, chemicals, and some physical pounding. I am thinking peroxide. I am going to try it when I get some scrap leather.

Thanks for all the help and answers. I'll definitely give it a shot. Couple more questions. What color is that? And how did you get the lettering so dark? Thanks.

This part confuses me a bit. At what stage do you from the inside piece to the collar? You do this after you wet it, fold the sides around back, and put it under a marble slab?
-
Beautiful!!! I'm new. Would you mind describing the 2 oz, double over leather in more detail? Like what kind of leather and how you doubled it over. Planning on making a collar for my dog soon. Thanks for your help.

New to leatherwork and want to make a guitar strap for my buddy. I was thinking about using wool/sheepskin for some padding on the inside of the strap. How would I go about attaching the woolskin? Is it just glue or cement? Do you sew the woolskin to the strap? Thanks for all the help.

I would recommend teaching your dog not to pull. Not trying to sound like a jerk, but it's easy to do although it takes a little time and discipline. I have a pit that knows better than to pull and she walks right beside me.
