  1. i almost bought a machine one time that a guy said would handle the thread, lol. people will say anything to sell you i swear....anyways i tried it and there was not enough space for the bobbin loop thread and needle and other thread to come through the hole in the plate. i could barely get the bobbin thread through the hole, that may be an issue as well.
  2. i had that happen a few times before on a friends machine, i didn't hold the threads at the beginning of the stitch and it was all downhill from there and then it was due to improper tension on one other occasion
  3. i noticed people are using a linen thread for hand stitching and i was wondering if i could get away with using that for both or if there were any disadvantages of using linen thread in a machine thanks everyone
  4. i heard of a saddle maker actually not backstitching and using a couple needles and saddle stitching it like you would by hand, you would still be left with the same issue but i wanted to tell everyone. 2 weeks til i get my cobra 4, I'm more excited for this than i have been for the past 10 christmas' lol
  5. a little under 2 weeks before i get my cobra 4 :o)

    3. busted

No more than Mr.ouchmyfinger by stiding the fact that he has bought a new sewing machine. There are lots of folks in here that would like to do that very thing. There are lots who can';t afford one. It is not necessary to shove this in their faces.

  6. Have you tried the glyceryn soap n canvas method? I find that much easier than wax. Plus I can get the edges a color that matches the product better. I use a bench grinder with a smooth wheel to do my sanding as well as a dremel for the hard to reach parts.
  7. when you get them let me know how they are, i don't use these much so i was making space. i have a very tight and organized work space so i try and not keep things that i rarely use. when i get a bigger space i will acquire more stuff lol. i have usually been disappointed with harbor freight stuff in the past, you can't beat their prices but some of the stuff they carry is just too cheap. every once in a while they will have something that is useful but it seems like that i am always using it for something other than what it was designed for lol. like the homemade clicker that i want to build ) i am awaiting my cobra 4 that should be here in about a week-2 weeks and the clicker will be next i hope thanks
  8. I wanted the opinions of some leatherworker. I know he is great with customer service but I do not know if he does leatherwork himself. Thanks for the link also. I still haven't gotten anyone to say what thread is the best to use
  9. yes it does, i did have another question, why do they sell a left and right twist thread? also i hear about people using a different size on top and bottom. is that just to accommodate for not having 2 spools to thread the bobbins? also when you say a zig zag is that bad looking, same question as far as the straight stitch that leaves marks. is there a way to keep it from leaving marks? i heard that someone had smoothed out the feet to keep that from happening. I'm just overwhelmed with trying to figure all this out before i ruin some leather lol, when you were talking about duty holsters and running it through wax, how is that done it seems like i would use that often seriously thank you for your help
  10. because i don't know what to order. I'm not sure what i should get as far as thread goes and i would need to know that before i order needles. my machine won't ship till next week i would like to go with a good thread that won't give me many problems and will create a nice finished product. i have tried poly thread once on someone else machine and it seemed to buildup around the needle eye like dandruff or something lol. thanks
  11. i will be getting my cobra 4 in 2 weeks and it is my first machine. I'm looking into ordering some needles and thread so it will be here when my machine arrives and i don't know what to order. i am going to be doing some wallets, belts and purses as well as some western rigs. i don't want to go the cheap way out so what is the best thread i can use as well as needles. looking for any info that will be helpful so i can practice a little with what i will be using thanks
  12. depends on the item, if half up front will not pay for the materials (like exotics usually doesn't) make sure to get all that up front, I've been burned quite a few times with taking a deposit and then they can't afford the rest later and I'm stuck hanging onto it forever and losing the time spent. also you get into that uncomfortable area when they want their deposit back after the materials have been ordered and cut. I refuse to do anything where i need to come out of pocket unless i know enough about them and feel comfortable.
  13. i have always used around a 5/6 -8/9 for previous projects but I'm working on smaller things patterns and thinner leather. how deep should i be going into the 3/4 oz? anyone have any pics of tooling in 3/4? thanks
  14. Hey everyone, i just ordered my barry king tools a few weeks ago and i want a few others that he has so i wanted to sell the ones i do not use often these are from the small/medium size list on his website. 90 shipped will trade the bar grounders for a slightly larger size, they are 27's i believe but i will double check and edit this post if they are not
  15. i know that they were held up in customs for a while and they had to call and get them off their butts and that they are in stock now, thats what i was told. i am in the low 40's on the list and spoke with them friday and they said it would be about 2 weeks for me. they go over every machine before it ships, and to pack that thing up is quite a job in itself, I'm assuming you will get yours before i get mine. this is my first machine that isn't a machine trying to do what it was not meant to do, i can't wait. update us when you get yours
  16. what is it, it looks like a splitter but with no blade lol. I'm not old enough to ID this one ) his location says east coast for anyone wondering before checking out the link
  17. they make a few kinds now to replace what they used to use. clearlac, neatlac, and there is another that i have never used but i believe is the same called wyosheen. it is a finish that acts as a resist also for using the antique finishes available, then you usually do one more coat over the antique after you have wiped off the excess and let it dry. its an art and there are many spots on here going over the process good luck i used neatsfoot oil, clearlac and fiebings sheridan antique paste on this, i got them from springfield leather
  18. i have done several searches for patterns and have found a few but your right we do need to possibly have a thread for this, i am not a computer blogger pro and I'm sure many of the members on here are not. so if i broke any of the typical forum rules that apply then i did so by mistake and apologize. i always take the time to answer peoples questions if i have the answer for them and have received many pms thanking me for my advice and i have had great success getting my questions answered here also and they help me become a more professional leatherworker and create a better finished product. the research and will to constantly better ourselves is what makes us achieve the highest standards and i was just trying to give back to the community and help those who feel the same way i do about this craft thanks
  19. what do you mean in the section of the forum? i posted in the general conv. section and i posted in the sheridan section to get sheridan style patterns as likewise for the other types of carving. not everybody goes in each section of the forum so this was the only way i could get a variety of styles, if you have a better idea i am all for it. they will stay on the forum for everyone to have but i was offering to organize everything so anyone that would need them could get them in one email instead of clicking on each one and saving each of them and labeling them for reference. if everyone contributes it will be somewhat time consuming and i wouldn't call that spam. i am not profiting off of this in anyway it is just to benefit everyone.
  20. hey everyone, i know all leatherworkers slowly gather patterns over a period of time so they will always have the right pattern for the project, well I'm trying to speed up the process for a lot of us in the beginning few years of our career. if you have a pattern or would like to draw up any floral, sheridan, or figure carving pattern please post it or send it to me in a pm WE ALSO NEED DIFFERENT USES OF BASKETWEAVES AND GEO STAMPS, ETC...PLEASE POST PICS OF EXAMPLES IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO CONTRIBUTE......THANKS make sure that these are legal patterns to share with everyone, do not use any patterns that will take money from anybody's pocket in other words. all patterns will be put in a folder on my computer and be available to send to everyone, i hope that this goes well and we can all have a nice collection of things to choose from for future projects. ill do all the labeling and divide all the patterns into their specific categories for everyone thanks everyone, also if you know of any sources for free downloads just post the link and i will go download them all for everyone thanks
