  1. I was going to attempt an oak leaf and wanted to know what is required. I need a pear shader because all I have is thumbprints
  2. there was an article in the leatherworker journal either last issue or the one before i believe. it was a saddle maker making a rough out saddle. that is dealing with the side of the leather your talking about so he goes over it with saddle soap and a glass slicker and smooths it out. i have done it and it turns out great. you may want to research your materials though and make sure it is not going to be an issue with the gun finish, i doubt it will but i don't want to not say to do your research and then something bad happen when it is done and dry is seems smooth and like it would be the answer. also the leather you start with is going to be a big factor, you may want to shell out for some nicer stuff with less junk on the back, this will keep your customers happy and probably end up with more cash in your pocket hope this helped, try and find that article. ill look n see what issue it was when i get a chance
  3. i already have the leather and thinner leather to do the inside also, ill try and find an example of what i had in mind
  4. thanks, i was going to design my own pages and have them printed out, the cheapest one i found was like 40 bucks and if I'm just going to use the pages the i dunno. i wanted to do the pages a little smaller than the 3 ring to leave some room for some tooling or something like that, i didn't know if this was common practice but everything i have researched has been just a basic notepad,
  5. i was looking for the linen thread and saw that they sell it in both left and right spun options, i figured i would ask why? i mean i didn't think there would be a difference but there must be if they make both options thanks
  6. gf's grandpa just passed away and they don't have a lot of money for a funeral so i wanted to make a guest log, or whatever they call it in the funeral business. if anyone knows a good pattern for this or where i can find one please chime in i gotta have this done asap thanks everyone
  7. Without the tooling u will just need some leather, a stitching groover, overstitcher for your stitching spaces, a way to punch holes, needle n thread. You can still make it look good with some nice dye and finish, or you could just do a nice coat of neatsfoot oil and leave it natural. The good thing about this hobby is that if you do your research and do a good job it can pay for itself. As long as you get some sandpaper, glyceryn soap, and canvas you can make great edges also. You may have to glue stuff together also so possibly some contact cement would be a good investment Tandy sells a good book on Lacing for like 5 bucks. Then you will need lace, Lacing needles (get enough because they do not last long), a way to punch lace holes. Shell out the money for good lace. It's stronger and looks way better when finished. Cheap lace is for boyscouts n breaks easy Good luck.
  8. I did some research and found these were not as valuable as I was told so I have decided to keep them Sorry everyone. I did not know. But at least I didn't have to be told this by someone else and look bad lol. Thanks. I'll let em go for 20 plus shipping but anything less than that isn't worth it with gas being 4 bucks a gallon lol.
  9. good work, what thread do you use? it seems like that is the one thing that I'm missing, i am never happy with the thickness of the thread in ratio with my stitching holes
  10. That's the same I use also lol. I also go over my stitches with a glass slicker and run the overstitcher after also. I lay my project down on scrap wood to ensure I'm going straight through. Thanks for the follow up. I didn't know the exact size of the bit at the time but yeah pliers are the only way to get it through lol.
  11. i just posted a well made 12 pc set of hole punches, they could use a good cleaning but I'm only asking 50 bucks shipped now. covers everything from 3/4" to 1/8" lemme know if u need em thanks
  12. can anyone explain why barry kings swivel knives are 45 with a blade and they are made out of solid brass and tool steel blades. it seems the next prices like the ol smoothie and leather wranglers are 110-130. why such a jump in price. i am completely satisfied with all of my barry king tools of course and his mauls are excellent. I have one of his beader blades as well and it definitely glides through the leather but i just got it so i don't have a longevity review as of yet. I'm about to take the plunge on a swivel knife so i was hoping someone could chime in also he makes a thin and thick version of his blades, which one would be best for sheridan style carving, small to medium size project. i would say from as small as belts to as large as a purse, no briefcase or saddles as of yet lol thanks
  13. everything is sold except the hole punch set, will do 50 shipped but if nobody bites soon ill just keep them thanks everyone
  14. blue guns sold, only hole punches left, price lowered to 50 shipped, if nobody buys them soon ill just keep em thanks everyone
  15. everything is sold except the hole punches, price lowered to 50 shipped, if nobody bites soon ill just keep them thanks everyone
  16. try a vinagaroon solution instead of black dye if you are having problems with it making your thread dark, make sure to not get it on the inside of the holster because it will cause a corrosion since it is essentially rusty vinegar. also when you remove it you will need to wash it off and a baking soda type bath will help neutralize your leather also. i use a dremel to drill my holes and i think it works great, you need to have a steady hand and make sure you are going straight down on the leather and through to the other side. its a lot easier on the hands for me but i never really had a GOOD awe either
  17. nice to see people using vinagaroon still. i have some that i use any chance i get.
  18. sold, thanks everyone still have the hole punch set available though, thats all i have left
  19. sold.................thanks everyone still have the hole punch set for sale if anyone is interested
  20. any swivel knives, if so what kind and how much thanks
  21. do you want to tool them on veg tan leather or do u want to make them out of other materials. the belts will obviously be veg tan so you will need an edge beveler, dye, chicago screws, buckles, and 2 hole punches(one for the chicago screws and one for the holes for the buckle. you will also need a strap end punch and an oblong punch for the buckle. then you need to find the method you want to use for slicking the edges, i recommend the glycerin soap and some canvas on a grooved slicker. springfield leather can supply you with everything except the canvas and I'm sure you can find that anywhere, i choose to use chicago screws instead of snaps because they are easier to put on the belt and easier for the customers that have a hard time with snaps. plus sometimes those snaps don't work exactly as they should and you really have to put some oomph in it to make them snap and its just too much hassle, and you won't have the opposite effect with them coming unsnapped by themselves with the chicago screws. just be sure to get the right size. purses you will need to find patterns and thats the difficult and fun part, then you will need to make the decision of a sewing machine or sew by hand, there are plenty of conversations on here for both. the e-reader sleeves are easy. i just made one for my gf. i hand stitched it and i didn't plan putting anything on the back then decided to so my borders around the outside didn't match up all to well. anytime you are gluing 2 pieces of leather together you will need to trim the edges to make them even, then sand and edge bevel and slick, so make do with what you may have at home. i use my bench grinder and a smooth wheel and that sands my edges down. i also drill my hand stitching holes with a dremel after i make a groove and use my overstitch wheel to space them out properly. you can also use the dremel to sand the edges of your work, to drill holes with the dremel you will need a small bit and a little kit that will let your dremel accept the smaller bits, so when you switch to the sanding barrel you have to take it apart a little and replace the internal grip thing and its a big hassle, thats why i leave it set up for drilling holes and use the bench grinder. this is the best method i have ever seen for the edges IMO here is also the ebook reader i made a few weeks ago. good luck FinishingEdges-2-15-11.pdf
