  1. Whew! Luckily this side cuts like a hot knife through butter. I just cut out my western belt and liners. Picked up the curved trim knife too, it helped a great deal around bends. I shoulda worn a mask when sanding though.
  2. wishing my 7/8" bag punch would get here already...arghhh!

  3. anyone used this yet? i'm using the professional dyes now and really like them. would this creme be a final top coat? Tandy Professional Creme
  4. yup, i got some of that. unfortunately for me, it was the first HO i ever ordered. after reading all of the postive recommendations on HO i was a little discouraged and dissapointed with it. nonetheless, i have a side of 6/7 sitting here waiting to go under the knife. i think i'll buy one of those tandy hook knives this weekend. how did you work out the edging? are you casing before u edge?
  5. thanks for the replies everyone. just getting a little nervous about this the further i go. normally i've just sewn pancake holsters. this will be my first attempt at a western rig.
  6. Another question for the ones machine sewing western, or really any holster with fillers. Would I need to make any tension adjustments or needle changes when sewing the filler? I intend to skive two 6 oz fillers down to zero. So, when the holster is folded and sewn together, I'll ultimately be transitioning from 12 oz on the toe to 24 oz at the trigger guard. I'm not sure if I'm making sense here or not. But any help would be appreciated.
  7. I should recieve that set any day now. I was hoping to find out what he uses. I have a guy that I'm making a western rig for and I want something that'll be flexible and not too glossy. i've been doing some google searches on making belts instead of holsters, and a few of the guys are using the Fiebings Leather Balm with Atom Wax. I think there's so many options out there, it's gonna be hard to decide.
  8. found this doing a search..... Nikwax Fiebing's Leather Balm with Atom Wax
  9. I'd like to hear a little more about the alternate ways of finishing as well. Would the "wax" finish described on Bianchi's page be talking about a polish type finish? Aren't shoe polishes wax based? I also read somewhere that a liquid wax finish was used. I didn't see anything like that on Tandy's website.
  10. Well, I guess that's as simple as it gets. Onward I go! Thanks Luke.
  11. Hello all. I got a buddy at work that wants me to build him a buscadero rig for his Ruger Super Blackhawk. We both like the looks of this rig and we like the looks of the wide skirted holster. After starting the pattern for the holster, I find myself scratching my head and ask myself "how'd they do that"? What I'm looking at doing is similar to the picture below. My question is: how'd they get the skirt through the slot in the belt? The skirt is obviously wider than the slot until it tapers at the fold line.
  12. very nice work. one day i want to do a seat. until then i'm working on holsters and belts. i love the color and finish. can you share with us what color that is and what you did for finish?
  13. I recently bought myself a stainless Colt Commander and I am wanting do up a real nice avenger style holster with embossed gator or ostrich skin. I want go to with grey and black. Up to this point all I've done is solid coloring. The picture of the seat below is the look I'm trying to achieve. However, I want grey and black vice brown and black. Would this be achieved by solid dying the grey first, then block dyeing with black?
  14. Howdy all. Been a while since I've done any work, well leather work that is. But I do have a question that I'm hoping to get an answer for before beginning my next project. 15. Loving all the input on this thread. Mop n glo? Never woulda guessed, but it looks very good. Please keep the inputs coming.
  16. Thanks Madadh! You'd be amazed how much of a difference it makes to use quality leather when it comes to molding. For this rig I used 7/8 oz double shoulder from RJF.
  17. Thanks Tac! With the exception of the attachment point just behind the ejection port, every other connection point swivels. My client/good friend wanted a diagonal carry. He can wear this either horizontal or diagonal (butt down). He wanted all black, so I tried to accommodate as best as possible. I was limited on blacking out the hardware because Tandy (which is local for me) didn't have black hardware, just antiqued.
  18. Just wondering what some of you use for a finish? I recently started using the Tandy Professional Gloss. It's a little too glossy for my taste. If you could please post a picture of one of your holsters with your favorite finish.
  19. Thanks Big O! I can't remember exactly but it was a pre-dyed split from Tandy. I want to say it's 2/3 oz. I'm out of town right now. I might be able to give you a better answer next week. The tag may still be on it.
  20. Thanks Abram. Yeah, when I started looking at making this one I didn't think it would be as complicated as it was. My customer wanted it to be diagonal carry, so that changed my original design and got me scratching my head trying to figure out how to accomplish that.
  21. Thanks Shooter! My own patterns, but looked at several manufactures for inspiration. Plenty of hours into this on development. Unfortunately, too much leather, folders, and hardware went to waste using the trial and error method. Thanks Eaglestroker!
  22. Well, after a few minutes of double checking everything. I found that the presser foot adjustment nut was the cause. I'll readjust the pressure and tighten it up.
