  1. Merry Christmas everyone!

  2. Went to Tandy today and noticed they raised the prices of the propeller gear conchos by a dollar! I am sad.

I am an Elite member also. Three months ago I purchased 6 sides of Koadiak oil tanned leather for $99 a side each, The new Elite price is now $180! I switched to Waterhouse for $140. Still a tad high but at least I get free shipping and save on taxes!

I've not been impressed with the selection on Tandy's site lately either. It seems that they only have a bit 1/3 of the products they used to have. Renee, Have you tried Conchos.com right now they have 20% off your order.

Great advice from you both! Sylvia, I have to check them out again. Last time I looked they didn't carry that concho, but they may have it now. Thanks!

  3. Finally ordered my makers stamp :)

Yes, it came, but it was not as expected. The stamp is nice. I ordered it via email with him vs checking out on Etsy because I wanted it to be a stamp AND be able to be used with a heat embosser. I didn't expect it to be flat on the back side. I either need a press now or need to fix it to the heat embosser permanently. The seller told me to use heat resistant glue for the heat embosser but it just falls off. I'll figure something out. My fault, I just assumed it would have a place on...

i need a press also. Found some on Ebay for less than £30 so its not a big problem. Quality of the stamp itself is excellent. So nice in fact it prompted me to buy a new web domain so i can start getting my stuff out on the web...i'm gonna be BarkingRooster.co.uk !

  4. Glad I went into my settings and found that I can "follow" posts I have made and be notified when others comment. Yeah, I am a day late and a dollar short. This is my way of saying sorry if I have never responded to a question you asked me LOL. I always thought it was such a bad layout because I would go back to each and every thread to see who commented. Which means after so long I stopped looking at it.

  5. Just ordered 2 more hair on calfskins from Tandy. I don't need them right now, but when I do they are never less than $100 and they are on sale this week for $59!

Now if I could only find the 1/4 block style number stamps that pop out and not sink in :) I found ONE set like that on ebay for $53 from the UK lol. Hate when they know they have something unusual. I have the letters. I have been using the numbers and letters that sink in for most of my navy orders, but I would rather the other. I just think they look nicer. PS: I know Cyber ROFL! I could carve them, but honestly that is too small for me :)

couldnt you get a set of stamps made for that money? This link (UK again - but probably similar in US) http://www.leprevo.co.uk/embossing.htm

Theres plenty of room to get a custom alphabet + numbers. The material is soft enough to cut up and mount on wood blocks to use individually. Theres a video here showing how its done

Cannot wait to see the finished product. It sounds like it will be amazing.

I wish someone would order something big for something so detailed. I bet if you did the seal on a peice of leather about 8x10 and got it framed then showed it to the sailors they would all want one to put on their "I love me wall".

  8. Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I tried Blockout instead of Resolene that I usually use as a resist. I put two coats on and let it dry for 30 hours. The least I can say is I am so PO'ed right now. It bled thru so much. When I wiped off the antique it was natural in blotches and dark as even in others.

Thanks Murray. This last project may be more than I can chew. I have made steampunk leather mugs with propelers that spin, real pipe handles, and a bunch of tooled gears. The orders are rolling in like fire. I should have bought the gear stamp LOL.

you gonna post pics of them, sounds pretty cool. Also, didnt you do some Navy chevron thing? Got pics of that? I'm retired Navy and have been thinking about doing some Navy themed stuff.

Buy while you can. Replacement value for tools and supplies I purchased more than a decade ago has probably doubled or more. I keep reminding my wife to make sure she gets a good price when she liquidates my leather stuff after I croak.

LOL That's what I tell our kids. Don't you dare nickle and dime my leather tools or this house full of antiques!

What type of Navy related items are you going to make them? I am a former sailor too and have lots of friends stationed in VA. Probably could drum you up some business lol

A great way to sharpen an edge beveler is to rub some jeweler's rouge on a piece or cord or a thin strip of leather and pull the beveler along that at as low an angle as possible. I do that a couple of times before every project and there are no hang ups even on soft leather that wants to crawl.

  11. Hopefully I can finish my market place handbag today. It has been a murderous final stage for me. The pattern calls for nippers at the very end to attach the bottom to the handbag. Well that didn't go so well. Hopefully the lace will cover up the mess ups.I have leather burn on my hands, dremel burns, and who knows what else I hurt making this purse lol.

  12. Well, I obviously need a lacing class or something. I always seem to have my needle a hole further than it should be while doing the double loop lacing. I undo it a million times, watch Tandy's video, and kingsmere instructions and still manage to be further with my needle than I am with the "x"

I'm confused. Can you take a picture of it?

  13. Uggg...I bought suede lacing from A.C. Moore because I was desperate and now I am paying for it. I think it has been in their store for a VERY long time. It's dry rotted. Unless all suede lace just snaps if you slightly tug on it.

    1. ReneeCanady

      ReneeCanady

SO the low carb strawberry cheese cake I just made definitely made up for it.

    2. EquusCustomLeathers

      EquusCustomLeathers

Cheese cake fixes everything! And yes, all suede lacing snaps like a twig as soon as you touch it..I have 3 rolls of it hanging around..they're all the same :)

  14. Working on my chink bag :) It's about time I make something for me! Then I get to work on the mini roper saddle kit I got for Christmas! Happy New Year all!

  15. Anyone know if you need a special tool to set conchos that have a rivet style back? I didn't realize this when I ordered them. They feel kinda cheap and bendable :(

    1. Spinner

      Spinner

the rivet backs are generally lighter than rivet back spots, just put a piece of 1/2 oz leather to keep it from scratching/denting and use a normal setter with a lighter hand & a few more taps.

      Thanks Chris!! Happy Holidays!

  16. Ever want to throw a project right out the window? I am just about there. I spent days tooling and now I just used med antique gel to contrast black dye. Let's just say the contrast isn't so much. I even tried sucking out some of the antique to lighten it up a bit. Well...now it looks like a two year old dyed it :(

I'll tell from experience...make sure the window is open. It costs more than the leather, and it stinks to have to replace both leather project AND a window.

Never thought to try alcohol, but I did use water since it was water based and scrubbed like crazy with a paper towel (good call Chief). It eventually came out looking more vintage than anything, but I guess it's ok for the project since it is for a belly dancer who is in love with arabic culture. Twinoaks...hilarious. I will keep that in mind!

  17. This round box I am maknig my daughter is kicking my butt! Still brain storming. Everytime I think I know what I want to do another idea pops in my head. It has to be atleast 16 1/2 x 6 1/2 with the handle on the top so you can carry it flat.

Disappeared into a very busy shop for a few months...lol. Speaking of pics, I just did a post of a a few of the latest projects in the Showoff area. Did you get any further on the armor?

    4. ReneeCanady

      ReneeCanady

I don't know what you saw last. I did the female armor set you knew about, but also (don't know if you seen any of the male or not) did a male armor set! And a million odd things in between lol. I'll have to go look for your pics :)

  18. Left Delaware and ran to Western PA to avoid Hurricane Sandy. All to find out we had to run back to avoid the snow storm approaching PA. All is well at home, thank God. Seriously thought the creek would have been in our house.

  19. Going pretty well here! How are you doing? I am just about done with my project. It's been on hold due to my Hubby having shoulder surgery (I need him to help me get it on for final adjustments)and he will need two hands :) Other than that, I have been doing a few small things so I can still be playing lol. I have done a wallet with a template I just popped out of thin air, the little b...

  20. Thank you Tap Tap Tap :) I am loving this website!! Thanks for taking the time to welcome me.

  21. Awesome post! Grumpy can be fun when there is humor like that involved :)

  22. Ok, if I am correct, I am more of a dork than I realized LOL. Is that profile pic a druid from the online mmorpg EverQuest? If so I could guess you now have a hunter on Wow? :)

  23. Thanks Chris! I tried the rice in a sock idea you gave me, and it worked pretty well! The only thing I have ever moulded was a mug so this in every form was different for me :) Should have seen me stretching the leather, it was quite humorous. Good news is they look like breasts and they seem to fit! I still have a ton of work to do before I can put all the parts together and really...

  24. New to leather working, and new to the site. STill trying to see where all these things go after I type them :)
