  1. garypl, thanks for the info. I thought I could buy something like 6/7 oz. and have it split to all one thickness, say 5 or 6 oz. I try Springfield Leather and was told they couldn't do a single thickness. I was thinking on calling OH and W&C. I'm also trying to figure out weights to have on hand in the shop (hobby). I seen a holster by Dwight on here for a S & W Shield That I would like to try to make, but only have 1-1/2 oz. leather. Thanks for your help Seabee
  2. I see such great leatherwork here. Was wondering when buying your leather do you have the leather split to one thickness? The molding and boning on holsters just outstanding. Seabee
  3. Very nice, the color is great, I think I'll try to this one.
  4. Johanna, Problem fixed. From one Buckeye to another Thank You very much. Howard
  5. Hi, all With the new Leatherworkers website format, when a person posts a thread with pictures I can not see them. I know there are pictures, because they get responds to their pictures. Is there a a button I should be pushing? I am not good with computer.
  6. Toney & Dwight, I didn't think about a phone. Thank you both. That saves some money. One question, does it have to be a smart-phone, because I have a dumb-phone. Howard
  7. Hi Dwight, Its a great day, no wind and 80 degrees. I just love living in the desert. I made pancake holster by Beverly Jones, that was in the Nov/Dec 2015. Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal on page 41. I can't post any pictures, as I don't own a camera. To tell you the truth. I don't know what type of camera to buy. I would like to post some pictures so I could get some feedback (good or bad). I have some thick skin, ah ah. I am learning mostly from this site, as I can not find anyone in my area that does leatherwork. Have a great day Howard
  8. Dwight, I dip dyed the holster after molding. I do like dip dying vs applying with a brush or rag and will continuing using that method. Thanks for your help. Howard
  9. Hi all, I was wondering if a holster can be molded after using water base dye or just using oil for a finish. I have read posts were wet molding was performed after dying,, but the posts don't say if the dye is water base or oil base. I am working on my first holster, and using a pattern in the Nov./Dec 2015 Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal. Howard
  10. Garynunn, I like that holster very much. Went and looked at my 60s leather flight jacket, and some of the edges look just like your holster. My jacket has been around the block a few times (30 years of military). How did you finish it, or was it pre-dyed leather. The leather weight also looks good around that pistol. Great job. Where did you get the pattern? Thanks for sharing, Howard
  11. Hey, I also liked that color, and used D. Brown and added a drops of Purple until i got the color I wanted. I also made test samples after adding each drop for future use. I started by adding 2 drops than 1 drop until I got the color I wanted. Another member suggested I use this process awhile back, and I start making my own colors. Howard
  12. I am a very bad leather carver, so today I gave all BK starter set, mauls and all my stamps except 2 basket & beveler stamp to the young man down the street. He came by my house in Sept. and asked me if I could help him make some christmas gifts. He wanted make belts and wallets. They are a young family with 3 kids. Every weekend he would work in my shop. Now, my shop is a small area in my garage. He and I are going to setup a work space in his garage starting next week. I know my stamps won't collect dust at his house. Happy Holidays, Seabee PS, I am sticking to plan holsters, belts, etc.
  13. Art, I would have called them, but no number just ebay site that said I'll be open on the 30th. Thanks, for your responds, I sometimes need to just vent. I do have to say that, their templates are very nice. Howard
  14. JLSLeather, I use both. The Stanley and a small round knife. You either like a round knife, or you don't. So, go kick the can down the road. Howard God Be With You
  15. Stelmacker, I have checked these sites and talked to CS at Mohawk. Thor, Thanks for the suggestion of mixing Dk. Mahogany and Purple. I'll play around with the different colors of dyes. Art, Richmond, Va. to far for this trip, however, I'am going to see if I can work Arkansas into this trip. thefanninator, Rudy's is on the list. thank you for responding. Thank you all Howead God Be With You
  19. I am planning a RV trip through the southwest states. I am going to route the trip around BB-Q pit stops as I keep an eye leatherworkers and leather shop on the way. Maybe, visit and have a morning hot drink. I thought some of members might have some suggests. Thanks, Howard God be with you
  20. Eaglestroker, Thank you for pointing out how the liner problem will affect the weapon when holstering. That in its self is a reason for stitching. In my field I can't afford a bad or unsafe holster. Thanks you again, Howard God be with you, and God bless America
  21. Terrymac, Glockanator, Red Cent, and Cleanview, I thank you for your responds. I am going to stitch. However, i'm not going to stitch my first holster. I want to see what happens when it subjected to water, sun, sand, and temperatures of 100 + degrees. Red Cent, I don't know who glues and not stitch. Everyone on this site glues and stitches. I also do not know anyone that makes holster or does leather working. I am learning leatherwork from all the great craftmem/craftwonen on this site. Maybe, some day I might have a customer or two, but don't see that in the near future. This is a hobby. The things I make, I give to people who need the item no $$$. Most are try to make ends meet. I get a warm feeling inside when say just enjoy the item and the look in their eyes is payment enough. God bless you all and God bless America, Howard i
  22. I'm sitting here thinking about making my first holster and was wondering why do I needed to stitch the leather edges. All I have is some 6/7 oz. and 2/3 oz.VTL, and was going to contact glue them together (flesh to flesh). If glue the is suppose to be stronger than the leather, why do the edges need to be stitched? I have read here that it is common to stitch after gluing. and let me say that the workmanship on this site is second to none, out standing work and willing to share their skills. Over the last year, you all have helped to stay on track. Thank You All, Howard
  23. Thank you all for responding. Yes I lined the jews with leather, NOW! lol. I used 2/3 oz. and hope thats OK. I used the pony today stitching a wallet and all went well. I didn't groove the stitch line because I thought the leather was to thin. Thank you again. Seabee
  24. When using a stitching with a pony/horse, how tight should tighten the adjustment? I know its for holding the leather, but I don't want to crease the leather. I have never used a stitching pony/horse, and just finished making a pony. Thank you in advance, Seabee
