  1. Hi guys how can you stop the scuffed bit of leather soaking up more dye than the surrounding un-scuffed leather...... as you know, scuffed leather soaks up more dye, more readily than leather in good condition, so was wondering does anyone know of a way to still use the scuffed stuff and being able to get a reasonably even coar of dye on it?// if that makes sense thanks al
  2. nothing i do is good enough.........to be honest i think its better that way, i just wish i felt a little more confidence so i didn't actually worry so much about it, if that makes sense. but it definately makes you put that extra effort in, so not all bad.. :-)
  3. without getting up close to the leather i can't tell, but are you sure it is actually leather, and not vinyl. a lot of cars have leather on the main sitting area (hardwearing) and something else on the sides etc, vinyl, split leather etc. i have seen many seats spliting like that on vinyl
  4. probably for the looks, easy fix though, a knick to the side of edge of the leather then its hidden like in a stitch groove.....
  5. we're DOOOOOOOOOMED......
  6. i agree dirtclod, that if the leather has gotten to mumm-fied skin state then its probably a goner but i use chemicals on my work that does soften up old dry leather and cracking leather, I just don't know whats in it.........
  7. Hi guys sorry for not getting backing sooner but our household has been down with a nasty stomach bug over the last couple of weeks so not done much, but have now played a little with the Isopropyl myristate, firstly i wiped some onto a finger of an old pair of leather gardeners gloves, they were rock hard and left them for 20mins, there is a definite softening of the leather, also applied to a cut off piece of veg tan which was soaked in hot water and left to harden, again seems to have an improvement too. I do need to be a little more scientific with the tests and will be on the next round, but a bit busy now catching up. also need to assess whether or not there is any interference with adhesion of pigments or dyes applied to the leather after treatment.......according to some people in the trade, it works well, but as yet i don't know if it works better than neatsfoot or not. al
  8. no I meant someone must have one kicking around some where......there most of been tons of these sold.....
  9. there has got to be one somewhere????? probably cunningly hidden behind the pile of rocking horse poop and in front of the jars of snake oil......was one given with the machines when new?
  10. don't know if this any help, haven't used them but fingers crossed http://www.sewingmachinemanuals.com/pfaff-345 al
  11. i repair furniture for a living and have been looking to find out what the industry uses to make the expensive products that we have to buy, i am part of a few trade forums and found this on there, some swear by it, but I until now haven't followed up, so bought some cost me £20.50 for 1ltr delivered in UK. i have now bought and used neatsfoot on veg tooling leather works well, but wouldn't use it on furniture for worry about it effecting the finishes. so when the Myristate arrives later this week will be playing, already have some old leather to use on and a knee patch taken off motorcycle leathers that has been through a washing machine and gone rock hard, so should be a good test, will let you know al
  12. I posted about a chemical that the furniture guys use, finally ordered some but wont arrive till next week, so can't say how well it works, but going on what others have said it should? Isopropyl myristate, will let you now how it goes when it arrives, if you can wait that long
  13. excellent, I like it.
  14. Hi tk1971 great job on that jacket...well done. looks like it was finished professionally. not too sure about steam, but please let us know how you get on al
  15. brilliant job, looks great, can i ask, did you just stain the leather or did you use a stain/ finish mix or pigment and sealant mix?
  16. nice one, its great getting new toys
  17. fantastic. thanks for sharing Bernie.
  18. thanks guys yes that's what i looked at when someone brought it up on another forum, ce without a doubt for anything made and especially sold as a toy. often with our regulations over here, they can often be open to interpretation, until its acted upon in court and a precedent is made. part of the products group is recreational crafts. which could leave it swinging a little? definitely worth considering these possibilities i thought whilst were busily making our wares......? i don't know if anyone has ever been in trouble with this or even if anyone would, but probably worth keeping in the back our minds. just my thoughts....
  19. thanks cyberthrasher, and everyone else who added, yep think your right so many using it can't be wrong, so will get a small bottle and try it out al
  20. errrm, no haven't tried.....as said new to carving etc, and as i guess most do, I've been reading everything i can find on the subject. and read somewhere nf can cause some probs? from greasy (maybe using too much? don't know to going off and smelling? again don't know) then i read about some repair guys using the above and thought, interesting, wonder if any else here has tried....
  21. ah yes, humperdingle found this, side effects, http://www.ehow.co.u...myristate.html. http://www.ehow.co.uk/about_5563462_side-effects-isopropyl-myristate.html
  22. ouch! didnt look that far. unless i was looking at something else, i was looking at this for one http://mistralni.co.uk/products/ipm-isopropyl-myristate cant find others now, a couple a little cheaper. furniture repair industry is using in on leather suites. I'm new to this, and heard some of these can cause greasiness, but don't know as i haven't tried...?
  23. Hi gang i have heard of an alternative to neatsfoot oil called Isopropy myristate, haven't tried it but allegedly it won't leave the greasy feel, so can't honestly say it works well or not, but has come from a good source. has anyone tried this....... al
  24. thanks, fortunately i don't don't suffer any more, had them moved into one of my campervans once, little darlings ate my wiring and blew up my lights took me ages to get them to move out, bought farmer strength persuader but they just kept eating it, was half expecting to find a note from them asking where my supplier was.... ... anyway same as most looking for some where to play properly, was thinking about garden shed, but definitely not now as i know they hang out down there in big gangs ...scary......
