I am on the hunt or a Bobbin winder for a Landis 3 and some bobbins for same machine. Does anyone know where they can be purchased and ball park prices. Thanks for any information. Ken
-
There is a rebuilt Landis 3 on Omaha, NE Craigslist. Probably as nice a machine as this man has ever seen. Not priced too high either. Fun to look at. Enjoy

Landis 1, is also a pedal machine and pretty reasonably priced if you find one that is not wore out. I have had a couple of Luberto Classics that worked good with a hand crank wheel or motor either one. without a motor dragging on it, it was really easy to turn and did a beautiful job of sewing. If it is a hobby, 400 sq ft will probably take a while to out grow. If you are serious about a saddle shop, I would recommend at least a 24 X 24 (576) sq ft. or bigger. Restroom is good and a large sink is a real positive. HTH

I would imagine their trees are the same quality as the ones they put in their saddles. .

I bevel around the makers mark, then use a different (either smaller or different shaped) border tool around the makers mark. I think you will be surprised how much the bevel will stand out your makers mark. HTH Ken

Pan Handle Leather Crappy Leather Warning
Ken Nelson replied to curtis k's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I really think it would be a good idea if all of us would be a lot better off if we would work with a supplier and give that supplier to make things right before we go to bad mouthing them on any forum. I know Jim Blaine pretty good and the guys that work there pretty well too. Better bunch of people I have never worked with. They are honest and good to do business with. You purchased a low end product and part of being a low end product is there is not really good quality control. If you have never been to Panhandle Leather, you can not imagine how much leather they ship out of there. I have gotten poor leather from about every supplier I have ever used. Some will try to make it right and some don't care. Panhandle leather does care and takes care of their customers. Just my 2 cents worth. Ken -
For not much more, you can probably get a good used machine from Cobra Steve, Cowboy Bob or one of the other dealers at the top of the page. An old machine in good working order will be better than the Boss. If you can live with the narrow throat, Champion narrow throats and American straight needles pull a great stitch for not much money. I usually get my machines from Cobra Steve. I cannot say enough good things about his service. HTH Ken

Clay Miller Bevelers. Best bang for your buck-Bar None. Just my opinion. they will last a life time if you take care of them and they are outstanding, He is on this forum. HTH Ken

This kinda surprises me as I used to have a shop in Rapid City, SD. I had a client that stiffed me for a considerable amount. I went to small claims court in Hot Springs, SD , and while it took quite a while to get through the process, Once I got the court order, the sheriff of that county went down and picked up a truck worth at least 10 times more than the judgement was and told the dead beat he had 10 days to pay up or his truck would be auctioned. Something doesn't sound right here. Good Luck, I wish you well. Those kind of business practices make it hard for honest folks.

How much other equipment do you have available. I have a 2003, Chevrolet Silverado, extended cab, 2wd, 5.3, tow package. 37XXX actual. It is on Clovis/Portales, NM craigslist. I have a couple of people looking to buy a complete saddle shop. Thanks Ken

Of course you are right, but it is a matter of rather you want the very best at a reasonable price, or rather you want a real good machine that is less money. I cannot afford the machine or I would have one like it. If nothing else for the COOL factor. I use a Cobra class 4, have had two of them, and am completely satisfied with it and the job it does. Shorter learning curve and a bit easier to work on if it does develop a problem. Still the higher end hook and awl machines are considered by the masters of saddlemakers I know to be the very best stitcher there is. Ken

I still have the building in Valentine, NE that is for sale. 1500 sq ft, built to be a saddle shop on an acre lot. I would sell it as a turn key saddle shop with the equipment listed above or just the building. I would throw in a basic set of new hand tools if someone wanted. There is plenty of space for a bunch of storage units which work really well in that area. I would sell either location or both. I will throw in a month intense saddle making school for either shop. Call or email me if you are interested.575-356-3628 during business hours.

AS I near retirement age, the following is for sale. Well equipped saddle shop on main street in Portales, NM. This shop if busy, There is a good demand here for good new handmade saddles, gun leather and gift type stuff, ( photo albums, day planners etc. Lots and lots of repair. 3 sewing machines, Cobra Class4, Nakajima 280- like new and a like new 31-20 singer. Crank splitter, crank skiver, pull through splitter, cutting tables, work benches, front counter,. I am going to keep my hand tools. This is a going shop that is BUSY. Also available is a 1900+ sq.ft recently remodeled brick home on an over sized lot. If you are a good saddlemaker, this shop will work. If you are a boot maker, Portales is an ideal location. I would stay for 2 months to get you started in the community. Buy the house and shop both and I will cut you a deal. 575-356-3628 during business hours, mountain time.
