I was referring to bottom of skirt, but I'm glad to hear you have built a tree less.I thought about this, but found very little on it and being novice decided I would try a treed saddle first.I'd love to see pics if you care to share?

Is the idea of the foam simply padding for the horse? If you ride a quality pad, is foam even necessary?

That does help, thanks!

What is the difference between blued saddle tacks and ring shank nails?
Also, on the tacks, what are the most useful sizes? When would you use which?

I have seen alot of saddles now a days that are using suede rather than wool for the skirts.. i want to do this as well.. what would be good padding material between bars and suede?
Cactus Saddlery is an example of a maker who does this. Their site says they use just neoprene padding. Would it need to be something specific to hold up over time and stress?

I noticed several clear coat sprays at hard ware store for various surfaces.is there any reason why this type of spray would not work over dyed leather?

I am using a black fielbings oil dye. I will then paint teal stripes on my piece. then i have to put pink letters on it. Is it best to topcoat the black, then paint teal, then topcoat again, then pink? Not sure and I have alot of topcoating issues, it always smudges and looks poorly. This is something i am still trying to figure out which is best to use, etc.
I tried bag kote and Proclear both with poor, spotty results

What is the secret to this spot setting tool? Alot of then don't set straight in, they slide sideways, ruining the prongs and leaving extra marks.what an I doing wrong?

I would skip Stohlman's books. I have them and they could just as well be still wrapped in plastic. In my opinion get the Harry Adams book or the series of articles by Pete Gorrel either is FAR superior. The other book I still find useful is the lee rice part of how to make cowboy horse gear though it is harder to follow and not as complete as the other two.
Where might we find the articles from Pete? I am very interested.

I have noticed certain saddle makers using suede rather than wool lining. what are your thoughts on this
-
thanks guys, that helps a few major questions i had!
-
1) I saw a post about stretching stirrups and when in process to do it? I read Dusty Johnson book and video and read first two Stohlman books and didn't see anything about stretching the leathers. Do you all do anything to stretch the leathers?
2) if you are going to do a full tool and dye job, do you tool and finish all the pieces before you put on saddle? But in thinking if you do that, it will get all distorted when stretching and putting on saddle.so maybe I just answered my own question?

I guess wouldn't have to be exact, but I do like the different cinching options her ring offers.
