Indeed, larger stamps of regular thickness (around 8mm) tend to crook after prolong pressing by small arbor press. Smaller stamps under 1.5x1.5 inches will be perfect. We now provide thicker material (20-25mm) for larger stamps to avoid the problem. But still, it's better to have a larger arbor press (with a larger pressing head) for more even emboss.

Yes a big hammer (preferably twice the size of your stamp) and a steady solid surface is essential. You could also try branding with heat which is excellent if you don't want to scare your cat away while you do your branding. I don't think the stainless steel 3D models made in shapeways will be suitable for leather stamping. As they are not solid stainless steel, strength is a question. They might be able to make 100% fillings on the model but the price will be very high. Secondly, their stainless steel final polising is quite raw, it may leave undesirable marks. But I've never made anything from shapeways and my speculations are only based on what they describe on the website. http://www.shapeways.com/materials/steel It's definitely an interesting thing to try! Hi BP, Usually for a clear emboss, the strokes of your design or text should be AT LEAST 0.5mm. Although our CNC machines can be as precise as 0.3mm, we don't suggest our clients to go this small. Since different fonts have different size of strokes, it is not accurate to refer the min. type size for a clear emboss. So how big is your stamp gonna be? You are welcome to send us the artwork to calvin@lwleathers.com and we can check if it will give a clear emboss on leathers.

Not everyone has space for an arbor press or heat pressing machine. I'd like to share an instruction we send to our stamp owners for embossing a small stamp (ideally under 1.5 square inch e.g. 1.25x1.25 inch). It is actually very easy to emboss a long lasting and deep mark just with a c-clamp (or vice-clamp) you can get from any hardware store!
