Hi,
This is my first leatherwork project since I joined Leatherworker.net and I thought I'd share how it's going.
First, I made a pattern, then cut out four pieces:
- back, including flap
- back reinforcing layer
- front
- gusset
I ran some tan leather dye around the edges of each piece.
Then I stitched the two back pieces together across the top of the back, made the holes where they will connect through to the battery box cover and put in brass grommets.
I punched holes around all the connecting edges (front, back and gusset)
Next I used a mexican braid to attach the gusset to the back - three thicknesses of leather - using gold coloured leather thonging.
Before starting to stitch the front onto the gusset, I hand stitched a buckle strap (and buckle) to the front piece.
At the moment, I'm completing the mexican braid around the front edge, attaching it to the gusset.
I've double (and triple) checked that it'll fit onto my motorcycle - and I'm having a ball - though it's a lot harder and more time consuming than I had thought it would be.
