I'm wanting to make a pulling collar for my wade saddle but I don't have another one to copy a pattern from, I can't find one online, and I'd like to put off buying one for a pattern as a last resort. Nobody close has one I could borrow either. If anyone has a pattern for one, I'd gladly pay for it. Thank you! Jamie

Hi all, I've started a headstall/breastcollar set and plan on doing a partial overlay (to the border). I used my divider and measured the breastcollar pattern and subtracted the borders dimensions which gave me the size of overlay I needed. It didn't work as well as I'd hoped and I was just wondering if anyone had a different/better way to cut their overlay to the size they needed. Thanks! Jamie

Hi all, Ive decided to bite the bullet and invest in a leather sewing machine, but I'm not quite sure which model would work best for me and what I intend to use it for. I'll be making horse tack (headstalls, breast collars, bronc nosebands), spur straps, wallets, purses, belts, and possibly some garments. I'm not ruling out trying a saddle, but not for awhile. I've decided that I want a Tech Sew model and have it narrowed down to a few.. The 3650 HD, the 2700, or the 4100 or 5100 (is there much difference between the two?) I don't want to buy too much machine but I want it to be able to handle a wide range of jobs. I want one that is easy to use and geared towards beginner/ intermediate users as my daughter wants to try making hair on pillows too. Thank you very much in advance and I look forward to your replies. Jamie

Wanting To Make A Handbag
ranchmom77 replied to ranchmom77's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thank you for your reply... Actually I was going to be be hand sewing it and that brings up another question.. Do I saddle stitch or "regular sew" stitch? -
Hi all I've got a fashion diva stepdaughter who is 9 years old, and I want to make her a purse for Xmas. I'm thinking pink with a mix of metallic silver and hair on hide. I've never made one before but I just bought the hobo pattern from slc and I think I'll be able to figure it out. What type of leather do you usually use for making handbags? I've found a lot of nice prints, some pretty chap leather, and some upholstery leather that looks like it will work but I'd love the opinions of some bag makers who have been there, done that. Thanks so much!

How Do You Know Which Size Oblong Punch You Need?
ranchmom77 replied to ranchmom77's topic in How Do I Do That?
Thanks Kevin.. I know that seems like a silly question but I wasn't sure if the punch size meant that it punched a 5/8 inch hole or was meant for use with 5/8 inch buckles.. Is that the rule of thumb? Punch size for buckle size? -
Hi all, I'm making some spur straps and I'm using 5/8 buckles. How do I know what size oblong punch I need?

Trouble Getting A Suede Lining To Burnish
ranchmom77 replied to ranchmom77's topic in How Do I Do That?
Hmmmmm... Alrighty then. So it looks like ill have to just sew it then? -
Hi all, I'm having some trouble finishing my first project. I'm making a bronc noseband out of 5/6 oz veg tan leather with a soft pigskin suede lining on the backside. It's looking awesome and I thought I was about finished, minus the sewing and edges. Tonight I applied gum trag to burnish the edges but the suede on the back pulled away rather than melded with the veg tan. It's glued together right up to the edge but it won't burnish. I read through Bob's edging post but didn't find anything that might help me except to maybe pull the suede off, apply a bigger piece (the suede is cut flush with the leather now), and then fold the edges under itself and sew it. I don't really want to do that but I will if that's all I can do. What should I do to get the suede to edge nicely with the leather? Thanks so much in advance! Jamie

Cyber thrasher you hit it spot on for me.. I watched a video and hadn't realized how fast it actually is! I've been practicing and it's like night and day.. I'm very appreciative of all of you taking the time to help a newbie out!

Thanks for your excellent tutorial Bob! I'm a newbie and working on my first project.. A bronc noseband. I used a piece of 5/6oz veg tanned leather and glued a piece of soft pigskin suede to the back to make it comfortable for the horse. I glued them together, then when I started the edges the suede wouldn't burnish with the leather. I used gum trag and a wheel but the suede pulled away from the veg tan.. What can I do about this. I was going to sew it after the edges were done. Thank you for your help!

I'm making sure to overlap the tool a bit over the previous impression and doing my best to strike with the same force each time, but my beveling is still very choppy looking. I'm just playing around on a piece of scrap so I used my molding tool to try and smooth it out.. It helps some but I'd like to know how to get it right the first time. Also since I'm here, do you do a border first, then the basketweave or is it vice versa? Thanks! Jamie

Thank you very much for your reply Scott.. I appreciate it! Will I need to edge it again after I glue and stitch the underside on? Also, for a later project, if I cut a shape into the noseband and added a piece of designer leather for an inlay between the two pieces, how would I edge the shape in the noseband? Thanks again! Ill get started on the casing process

I bought a 4/5 oz single shoulder from Tandy with the intent of experimenting with a few small projects. My first one is a bronc halter noseband. I made myself a pattern and got the leather piece cut out... But now what? It's pretty stiff stuff so do I need to put some neatsfoot oil on it before I case and tool it? Or do i case it, tool it, then apply the oil? I plan to dye the entire thing as well.. When do I do that? I'm going to hand sew a soft piece of suede on the underside for padding, but I sew it together last after gluing it, correct? I've found several helpful posts about the order of things, but couldn't find one that mentioned using neatsfoot oil in the order of things. I really really really appreciate any help to get me off and running. Thanks so much!

Hi everyone, I'm going to make a pair of queening chaps chinks for my daughter and I want to use acid washed calfskin in a soft pink or lavender color. I saw a pair in Cheyenne from Sierra Custom Leather and they were just stunning. I've done a lot of google searching but can't find the colors I want. Any help? Thanks! Jamie

Hi all, I'm not getting any answers when I posted on the other forums so I thought I should try here I want to paint a flag on a plain breastcollar to match my daughters shirt for her rodeo princess duties over the 4th.. Question is do I need to deglaze a store bought collar before I can paint on it and then reseal it? Or can I paint right on it and just seal it again? Thank you! Jamie
