Well the one place didn't work out. But there is a place called NEW England needle (1-800-243-3158) that carries schmetz needles in sizes 200,280,300 they are $2.95 ea. I just ordered a ten pak of each just to have. I may never need the two bigger sizes but if I do I'll have them. The fella I talked to said schmetz will make a run of needles but he has to order 5,000 or so of them for them to do it. Mike

Leo www. Aaronmartin.com has 180, 200, and 230 size they run around 3.00 ea. I think they also carry a 160 and I think their 4.00 ea. I think the 160 is a schmetz and the others are made over seas. Their nice folks give em a holler. I have another place wrote down somewhere that has sizes up to 300. Let me know if you want that name and I'll find it. Mike If that place I call Mon. works out I'll let y'all know. Mike

Les Thank You for clearing that up for me. I'm calling a place Mon. About some needles they were about half the price of everywhere else. Thanks for the heads up on the thread but unfortunately I have a few spools to get thru before I can change over. Thanks again, Mike

Hi all I have a quick question on these needles. What is the difference and what does LR stand for. I'm using shmetz 331 LR in my #6 right now. But I found some shmetz 331 needles that are cheaper. Will these also work in the #6. I'm using bonded nylon. Please excuse my ignorance on this matter. Thanks, Mike

I'm redoing my bobbin winder for my #6. I was wondering if the wax pot and water reservoir should be painted on the insides. Or are they left bare. Thanks, Mike

Nice work brotha!! That's a pretty cool color. Mike -
Leo I would love to see pictures of you're set up. The removeable table is something I definitely want to build. I would also like to see how you have the bobbin winder set up. Right now I'm obsessed with the thing. I want to learn all its capabilities. It would also be nice to know what attachments one could get for it. Such as on mine where the spool of thread sets there's a hole with a round discolored wear spot. The wear spot is about the size of a copper washer for a rivet. I have no idea what was there. I'll stop rambling now. Thanks, Mike Leo I would love to see pictures of you're set up. The removeable table is something I definitely want to build. Les Thanks for the info. I'll be looking forward to the write up. I've read everything I could find on the net. But it would be nice to have additional info. I think we need a #6 page with good pics and info. in one place. I've been cleaning all the old wax and gunk off of mine. In the process I've broke a couple of bolts off I need to replace. I still need to order some needles and such. I can't hardly wait to sew something on it!! Thanks Again, Mike I forgot to add the fella did find the original complet bobbin winder and a pricker foot. Mike

Thanks dirtclod that's probably what I'll wind up doing. Although I would like to save enough pop/beer cans to get a original. I know that's alot of cans!!! Mike

I no these ?'s get asked a lot. But I'm gonna ask em again. So bear with me. I found a #6 the fellas asking 1800 for it. He says he's had for 40yrs and it was his grandfathers before that. The grandpa done shoe work. He says it works good in the picture it looks damn clean. There is one row of lettering around the handwheel. There is no bobbin winder or needles with it. After reading old post on this machine I still have ?'s. are needles still available and if so how expensive are they. Can I get a owners Manuel for it. Are parts still available. Bobbin winders sound as rare ad hens teeth. The final question is this #6 worth $1800 and a eight hr round trip drive. I know I could get a 441 clone for a few hundered more but I really love these old stitchers and it sounds like it will see anything I want from holsters to skirts to headstall parts. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Wiz Thanks for the info. As much as I hate to I think I'm gonna pass on this one. Although I really want one. My buddy has one he wants two grand for. I know it works. I just think I'd have more money wrapped up in it getting it here and just buying the basics. I'm gonna tell him to try and sell it on here. Maybe someone closer can use it. Thanks again, mike

I found a union lockstitch for sale. The only problem is it's in Pa. The guy selling it says he took it and a consew 226 in trade for some work. He doesn't have a clue about either mach. he says they both start up and run when plugged in. I don't think he has the threading rod or wrenches for it. Or any extras for that matter. He can get the machines to his buddies house which is four hours away from me. I'd have around a grand in them with my fuel. I'm not sure its worth the hassle of driving 8hrs round trip to find out it's a boat anchor! Plus I'm really not interested in the consew. So I figured I'd let ya'll know if someone lived up that way it might be worth it to go have a look see. If your interested let me know and I'll send ya his #. Or ya can look at for me! Mike

Blazin Thanks glad ya liked it! Footrat Thanks for the info. I kind of figured the process would include the destruction of a few helmets. I also wouldn't want the liability of a LODD. With all that said it wouldn't bother me a bit to wear a helmet I made. But the department wants everything NFPA approved. If something were to happen and I had a non NFPA approved lid on I'm not sure my family would be able to collect the insurance even if the lid had no bearing on the incident. So I stay with my Conway for now. Thanks again, Mike

I just got my first patcher a singer 29k 62 sn ED109390 I think it's a 41 model. Anyway I ordered some thread and needles today. I can't hardly wait to use it. I got all kinds if stuff I'm gonna sew around the house with it!! I was wondering for ya folks that sew material like jeans. Do you use nylon or go with a cotton or polyester for such stuff. Thanks, mike

Thanks I wanted to go with the high eagle but couldn't locate any. I've also seen a lion and rooster that were pretty cool. You wouldn't happen to have a link or contact info. for those folks would ya. I've been thinking of hand carving one and making a mold so I could cast some. But buying one would be better! Does putting the shell on the cairns impact cap make it NFPA compliant. Thanks again, Mike

Thanks brother for the compliment. If I can do anything or answer any questions just give me a holler. This has went over pretty dang good with everyone that has saw it. I've been asked to possibly make some as retirement gifts. I plan on making fifteen mini helmets. One for each guy on my shift for Christmas. I have to many projects I want to do. Mike

I want to thank y'all for all the kind words. Mike

Thanks I covered a off the shelf hardhat with the brim cut off. Although I think it would of held its shape fine without the hardhat shell. The brim is 12oz and 6oz veg tan with a piece of baling wire between the two. The wire helps the brim hold its shape. Mike

I want thank everyone for the kind words. I did take some pics along the way when I remembered to which wasn't as often as I should have. As far as patterns I'm not sure how much good they would do. As I will need to adjust them for the next one. Some were way off. I just adjusted them on the fly this time. All the pics need to be resized. When I get time I'll do that and post them. I would be more than happy to share anything I know which isn't much. If I get some time I'll try and do a tut. as I'm not the fastest on the computer. Thanks again, Mike

I've been wanting to make a leather helmet for awhile now. And with our 125th Kansas State Firefighters Association conference this year. I thought what the heck. This helmet is just a wall hanger as its not NFPA approved. It will be auctioned off at the conf. with all monies going to a scholarship fund. I had fun building it and learned a lot. Hopefully the next one will go faster and smoother. Thanks for looking, Mike
