cutting small items with curves
David Fields replied to frank207's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I also use an x-acto knife for cutting out hair barrettes and other small items. David -
Troy, I know the product as particle board. I agree with you...I will be using solid wood as a mold. I'm sure it will hold up much better than particle board would. Thanks for your info! David

I have a dumb question...what is MDF and where do I find it. Is there an advantage in using MDF over wood? Thanks, David

I haven't tried wet molding yet but I'm interested in doing it. What are your molds made of? It doesn't look like wood in your photo. David

It looks really good to me! Did you use an airbrush to color it? -

I appreciate all the responses! The main reason why I can't use a snap is because it tends to twist around and my design requires a rigid, fixed position with no twisting. Velcro offers that. I think the pattern is kind of cool (I've never seen one similar anyway) and hope folks will appreciate it despite the velcro fastener. If not then I'll have to think of another solution. I have a cell phone case using a velcro fastener that I've been using for 2 years and so far I've had no problems with the velcro dots coming off. But the super glue is a good idea just to be sure it stays on. Thank you everyone! David

Nice looking seats! I only wish I could do lacing as well as you. David

I just finished up my wallet...

Yep, to me your design screams graphic designer, I'm one too. I've discovered that my graphic design background really comes across in my leather designs. David -
I've seen snaps and lacing used to connect the ends of bracelets but don't believe I've ever seen velcro. With the wrist band pattern I'm designing, velcro is the only connector that will work properly. In your opinions is there any reasons why velcro wouldn't be a good choice? David

Thanks Tom! I don't know what you mean by "string my bracers". Are you saying you lace it instead of using snaps? David

Very nice design! I like the way the back graphic continues over to the front. David -
You done good my friend, nice job! I haven't done a bracelet before, how do you know what length to make it (assuming your making them to sell). People have different size wrists. I guess the width can be any size up to maybe 2"? David

Hello King's X Do you have a pattern for the bottle koozie that you wouldn't mind sharing? Thanks! David

Is there a trick to using the rope tool so the impressions all line up perfectly? I've tried using a line as a guide like you do with the basketweave tool but that doesn't work with the rope tool because the tool doesn't have a flat edge. HELP...are there any rope tool pros out there? Thanks!

That is truly a magnificent work of art! How long does it take you to do a project like that. I'm really just a novice myself, I carved and tooled a wallet and it took me around 8 hours or so. Just curious how long a project like what you did took. David

Very ominous looking top hat. It reminds me of something you would read about in a Charles Dickens novel. I love it!

Beautiful work! At first glance I thought those note pads were full size Legal Pads.

Very nice theme and the bright colors are wonderful. I don't believe I've ever seen Alice look any hotter! :D -
It looks darn good to me. The only thing I noticed was the alignment was a bit off in a few places, but I'm just nitpicking. Over all it looks good.

Are you able to live off of what you make working in leather? That would be a dream come true if I could make a living doing leatherwork, and as you say quit working for the man. Where can I pick up a copy of "Artisans & Money" and how much is it? I searched on Amazon but they didn't have it. Thanks, David
