  8. Jason, (Chief?) Okay, half the width of the gun added to the outline? I am getting this idea! I think.... So if the knife hilt is 7/8" wide, I find the midpoint there? How does one account for leather thickness? I think this is a big part of my problem. Folder width paper fits, leather not so much
  9. These are being made for a client, so I don't get a big say in the design type, Red Cent
  10. Thanks Jason, I was considering that myself, just worried about retention. I think I am just going to have to try it out and risk another few sheath cut outs for slimmer knives CR, that tutorial looks indepth and very helpful, I will spend some time on it and see what I can sort out!
  11. Thank you, I will give it a shot, but it sure does look tough!
  12. I always include a welt, but my concern is keeping the mouth circumference wide enough. Maybe I didn't cut a big enough piece of leather... Camano, that link doesn't take me to a specific photo, but I like your stuff! Electrathon, I am not sure you what mean by offset? Like keep the back flat and fold over and mould the top? Thank you both for answering so quickly !
  13. I keep running into a wall on designing knife sheaths. Is there a hard and fast rule as to what can or cannot have a pouch sheath? I have a custom knife with a 4.5" hilt circumference and a big ol finger guard for example, that has stymied my attempts at making a pouch style sheath, which is what the client requested. I can't figure out how to do it without a huge thick welt, which I really don't want to try and stitch through. OR, I am going about this all wrong.... Thoughts? Thanks!
  14. I know every leather worker has a different method of finishing, so I will try to keep it more general. I don't tool (yet) but I used some antique to dye a project, and then used tan cote on top of it for a sealant, not knowing it thins antique, hello streaky end product that I spend hours on. So I have got to figure out a decent finish technique, but I have so many products, and not a clue what most of them actually do. What is resolene? What dyes can I use it with? Same with Tan Cote, I know now I don't want to use it with antique, for my purposes, but will it thin ALL water based dyes? I also have some super sheene laying around. Basically, I have an assortment of products and I am not real sure how to use what with which. If there is a general rule, aka only use X with Y type dyes, I would love to hear it. Someone else brought up waxes. Am I supposed to be using that too? I'm overwhelmed here. Long story short, I want a nice finish, and no real idea how to achieve that. Help me gurus?
  15. Thank you for your reply! Very helpful info! I picked up some more setters, so I am going to give eyelets another go. Can you please elaborate on the s-shape of the prong? As far as the dog buckle, I am still confused why these are sold this way, but I am guessing I can just use any buckle and be sure to have a long foldover? Thanks again!
  16. I originally posted in the Getting Started section, no dice, so I am trying again here! So I got my catalogs in from OTB and was checking out the Springfield website, and maybe my brain is scrambled from the options, but I could use some help in sorting this all out. 1. Do the finishes differ by company? I noticed that OTB has only a few items I need in Antique Nickle. If I order rivets from them, but buckles from Springfield, is it likely to get finishes that don't match? My money is on yes for any finish other than nickle, and of course stainless steel. 2. I'm looking to make belts, collars, and other fun stuff. I've seen buckles listed as "dog collar buckles" with an extra bar across the buckle. Are these to prevent over-tightening? Would these be useful in other applications that are weight bearing, such as cargo straps? 3. It was only a few weeks ago that rivets were thine enemy, however eyelets have now usurped them. I can find eyelets in random hobby lobby available sizes, and no setting tools for them, aside from in the big catalogs. I feel like this means I am missing something. Before I destroy my hole punches to set these things, is there a better practice aside from ordering setting tools for each and every size? Or do you just pick two, one large, one small and go with that? 4. Lastly, I may be over thinking this, but if I want to use eyelets on my belt holes, is there a general buckle prong to eyelet diameter/post height? The eyelets I picked up appear too small to sit in the leather well with a belt prong through them. I don't really know, because I have no set eyelets (see #3 ) Thanks to all of you for your endless patience with the learning process of others~!
  17. Moving to Hardware section. Admin please remove, thanks!
  18. Since I am asking newbie questions, I decided to post here instead of hardware. Admin, please move if needed.
