  1. Thanks, JLS and Bill. I just did one coat (yellow paint over purple stain) - it really soaked in and looks like I'll likely have to do several more.
  2. I stained, via airbrush, some pieces with purple Pro-Dye and they have a kinda goldish cast or sheen to them. I haven't put my final finish on them yet and I'm wondering if the sheen will go away when I finish with Tan-Kote. Also, to avoid the sheen, should I dip with the purple rather than spray it?
  3. I've got some pieces that I have stained with Pro-Dye and I intend to paint some letters that I have carved/stamped on them with Angelus acrylic paint. I want to use Tan-Kote as my finish. Should I apply it before or after I paint the letters with the Angelus paint?
  4. This guy has some really neat looking stuff (perhaps he's even a member here?): http://www.savoyleather.com/ I'm wondering how he gets those stamped impressions for things such as "101st Airborne", "Don't tread on me" with the snake, etc. They look much too detailed and even (particularly something like the snake) to have been hand-carved. Any ideas how he's doing that stuff?
  5. I intend to make a light (baby) blue wallet but don't know how to go about doing it. Stain? Airbrush blue satin over white paint? Any suggestions as to how I should proceed?
  6. I've got a cardboard template made already. I'll see how well the item sells and if I get lots of orders I'll have a clicker die made.
  7. Nice. Can you tell more about how it's put together, please? How is the buckle fastened to it, how did you make the loops for the posts, etc.,?
  8. So the one way part makes it easier to open? That's what I'm looking for. The one that is on the holster now is very difficult to open.
  9. That's what I was concerned about. The snap in your link is the same thing as a Line 24 snap, right?
  10. Just to clarify, these are the type of fasteners I'm referring to: https://www.etsy.com/listing/158132387/lift-the-dot-fasteners-black-finish-5-10?utm_campaign=shopping_us_SeventhHill_sfc_osa&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_custom1=0&utm_content=7239723&gclid=CjwKEAjw85DIBRCy2aT0hPmS1jkSJAC1m9Uv0kan-qF7expNepdQ-PLUaAp0-mSMcw_NrC4BCfWOuxoC4Azw_wcB
  11. I have a customer that wants the regular snap on his holster replaced with a lift the dot fastener. I can't tell from pictures which ones may be long enough to work with a leather holster. Can someone point me in the right direction, please? I only need one - two if I mess up the first attempt.
  12. I think what I maybe should do then is draw it up and have about 50 or so cut with a laser from a local shop and see how well they sell first. If they fly off the shelves (we all know that is probably unlikely), then I can maybe look into getting my own laser setup or clicker setup. Thanks for the guidance. An afterthought: How WOULD I go about doing a drawing myself?
  13. Just curious AZNight, how much did that piece cost including shipping?
  14. Where could I get that done? Any idea how much a typical die costs?
  15. So I've got this minimalist wallet design that I've been perfecting and giving away to friends as gifts and my friends have convinced me to try selling them through a couple of local gift shops. This would involve making dozens of them in advance to show my different colors and stamping options. The wallets consist of only 2 pieces, which are riveted together. Marking them and cutting them out by hand, over and over, is a pain in the butt. What are my options for speeding this process up? I don't have a clicker press, but could I possibly have a steel rule die made and just whack it with a mallet to cut them out? Any suggestions on how to step up my production?
  16. Will I get better leather if I order from someone else other than Tandy? There is a local Tandy store near me and I'm just not impressed with their hide selection. Every time I'm in the store it just feels to me like it's a "staging area" (warehouse) for mail-order junk for amateurs. It's just "cheesy-feeling" all around. If I order from Springfield, Weaver Leather Craft, etc. am I more likely to get better stuff?
  17. Sorry to have to link to a video, but can someone tell me what tool is used to make scales like the ones shown on this piece? I believe he references an "English point" tutorial, but I can't envision how an English point would be used to make scales. https://youtu.be/plpMHz3Q-14
  18. Aha! Two-sided tape should be the ticket. I just got back from the local Tandy store with a roll of it. I'll let y'all know how it works out. BTW, have prices on leatherworking supplies gone through the roof or what!? I was going to purchase a couple of stitching chisels and, my gosh, they were almost $20 a piece! A set ranged from $50 to $80! Tandy has the most overpriced JUNK currently in the retail world. It's not like any of their equipment is top-notch stuff - it's typically made in China or Taiwan - I don't get it.
