  1. It looks like it could be tan latago.
  2. A McClellan would be nice we could alter the pattern to fit other trees easly. Are you going to let us know on here when the patterns are ready? William Elliott
  3. I have always have to throw my vote in for Paul over at Leater wranglers the Sk-3 is the best knife very little stromping very sharp. Of corse everyone is entitled to there own opion.
  4. I've looked at that site several times how long is that school? Does anyone know?
  5. I've used some deer antler for a button on a set of saddle bags. I use a hack saw to cut the antler into pieces. Then i used my dremal tool to cut a slot in the middle of the button. Fair warning went you cut the antler it stinks to high heaven. I would recomend doing all the cutting outside unless you want your shop or house stinking for a couple of days.
  6. The way I have fixed them in the past was to boil them for a few mins. to loosen the mimbrain (sp?). Then you peel them Cut them in to chuncks. I use buttermilk to dip them into then batter them in flour with salt and pepper to taste. Have your oil hot and they will cook fast. You can ude the same oil for some french fries. Hope this helps.
  7. I would like a couple of diffrent sizes.
  8. What imean after doing a little more reseach is a desk pad. It's to protect the desk. hope this clears things up a little bit.
  9. I have been asked to make a desk set. I've got everthing figured out accept for what to use for the ink blotter. They do not want plastic. What type of leather could I use that would take the pressure of using a pen on it daily?
  10. Would you attend any 1-2-3 day training classes here in Central Texas? Yes, Brownwood use to be the home of the boot and saddle show it might be a good place for the event. What range of cost would you expect to pay for this training? depends on what the class is on and how long. What influence would make you come to these trainings? To learn the hard to master skills. General, Western Floral, figure or Sheridan carving? Sheridan carving What would you expect to be included in your fee? same as above If lunch or meal was included, would this encourage you to attend? lunch or not i would attend I've wanted to attend other shows but when a two day drive is ahead of the event it makes it awful hard to attend.
  11. King's X correct me if I'm wrong you can only order over the phone with them right. I looked at their site and it doesn't have much of a selection. Do you know if they have a catalog.
  12. 50 years leather, The parts of the hide that were good tooled good but the other parts would not hold a good basket stamp. after stamping it looked rough and felt rough. I quit using tandy leather about three years ago because non of the hides I recieved were consistant in thickness and they felt like card board. I found weavers and started using them but I like to help the little guys out and not the big money makers.
  13. Hilly, on the first hide that I ordered I just ordered it on line. The second one I odered I did call and talked to Kevin and a very nice young lady and expressed my concern with ordering another hide of that poor quality. They said they would hand pick the hide for me. Alittle more than half of the hide was useable. The other part was of very poor quality. The tooling side was very loose and would not hold a good basket stamp. I've always had good luck ordering with SLC. I will order with them again just not my leather. I just can't see spending one hunderd dollars and only being able to use alittle more than half of the hide. I know that when buying a hide their will be some bad spots but times are tuff and I want my money's worth. And back to answering your question lol yes I have used W&C I mainly like their saddle skirting skived down to 3 to 4 oz for wallets. For duty belts and holsters I like HO it seems to me that it holds up better and tools better. But that's just my opion.
  14. Where is a good place to purches some herman oak leather I'm looking for some 7/8 and 3/4? I have also seen it priced between 148.00 to 168.00 are these prices about average. Before anyone recommendes SLC I've already tried two hides on seprate occations and I was not happy with eather one. The top grain was loose on both of them and one of them had black spots on it. I had to use oxilic acid(SP?) on them to get the spots removed? Any help would be greatly appricated.
  15. I would definatly have a welt because it protects the thread from the sharp edge of the knife. I would use some thinner leather like 5 to 6 oz. and put a strap that goes across the top of the blade. hope this helps
  16. First off I don't know of any sites. I have made a few range belts I prefer 7 to 8oz for the front and 2 to 3 for the liner. The billets I do the same as the main body of the belt. I prefer the 3/4" buckel sets I did one belt with the one inche I thought it looked to big for the belt. One last thing I always sew my belt to help with the stretching and in my opion it gives the belt a more profesional look. Hope this helps you.
  17. That ain't no fun for sure. That happens here in Texas a couple of times each year. About three years ago we got soft ball size hail. I have a friend that had one go all the way through the roof. Glad nothing was damaged.
  18. Someone on the board recommeded full spectrum lighting. I bought my light a big lots for i thing 20 bucks it is the best money for a light. Hope it helps
  19. This is kind of off the topic but anyways. I went to a ranching haritage in Abilene Tx, this past weekend and saw several booths with leather goods some were outstanding others I would be ashamed to put my name on. There was a guy there that had a floral carved belt he had priced at $795.00 I about died when I looked at this price there was nothing out of the ordinaryabout the belt matter of fact it was the exact pattern I bought From Hide crafters for my work belt. I started talking to the man running the booth to see If I could find some logic in his pricing but long I spoke with this man all I could see was greed. I do have to say there was alot of compitision at the event there were sevral up and coming leathercrafters and alot of well known crafters. If anyone has a chance to attend one of these events I would highly recomend it.
  20. I just bought one a few weeks ago at big lots. It was 29 dollars it's a full specturm light it's the brightest light I've ever had on my work bench well worth the money.
  21. What I have done is I got some old pepsi display shelfing that was being thrown away. I combined two sets of shelfs in to one that is about a foot and a half from the celling. It holds all of my leather and my magazine boxes. I foound If you look behind super markets they just throw thoughs shelf out behind the store if you go in and ask they want that junk removed.
  22. I saw on a link one time a company that made some type of plastic patterns that you sent them the pattern and they would etch the pattern in and you can use it over and over. Does anyone Know what company makes those? All help would be greatly appercited.
