What weigth leather for a rigid briefcase?
pella replied to pella's topic in Satchels, Luggage and Briefcases
I am glad you like the bag! The strap is inspired by the old fashion english girth straps. Sorry pics are not very good. No picture of the inside, i did place a separator in the middle, there is no lining. -

This is an old thread, i did finish this bag, with 7-8oz bridle leather, picture attached. I hand-stitch at an angle. Thickness was perfect. -

What weigth leather for a rigid briefcase?
pella replied to pella's topic in Satchels, Luggage and Briefcases
Hi and thanks for your replies. I may end with an heavier leather finally, i have to order "custom made" leather to get thinner weigth...so i am thinking making the bag with angled stitching (like a military cartridge box). Or Kevin, can you explain to me if you skive on all borders were stitching will be? Because i am figuring 8+8oz that make 16oz edges, thats pretty heavy. Anyone have a picture of a brifcase made with heavy bridle leather? I did not find on the forum. -
Hi title say all. I am wondering what weight would be great to make a unlined brifcase (laptop case, 2 compartment, with shoulder strap) ideally with bridle leather. I was thinking 6-7oz but it is very difficult to find in a finished color (i dont want a russet leather) . 7-8oz ok? Guy want it protective enough (rigid). I have found a nice brown latigo but i am not sure because of chrome edges. I will hand-stitch this bag, so thinner the better, but need to stay firm... thanks to expert

hum...i have found brown at Boutin as a Latigo 6-7oz. Not sure because of chrome middle (dont edge like a full veg leather). I have taken a look at Wickett, it would be possible, at extra cost. Still wondering what to order thanks

Looking for a used western wide saddle
pella replied to pella's topic in General Saddlery Discussion
I am not sure it is my horse who is narrow or my donkey who is extremely fat...he got it overweight and he never loose that over fat. His back is VERY large it is almost like a flat table when you compare to his little size. There is another young female donkey on my street wich look much more slimer, yes i did remember the back was not that wide. -

There is no screw, it is a string poping out on the horse gullet picture. Finally the tree dont fit that good on the donkey, it rock. For the horse, the fit is almost perfect, just twist not good were is the stirrup leather. Could be flatter there thank you very much -
they repelled the magnet?! pure silver is not magnetic and it quite soft

Older Saddle......??
pella replied to chevygirl's topic in Saddle Identification, Restoration & Repair
If there is no marking, it will be hard to identify. For my short knowledge. I can tell you my impression: 40-50's style not top of the line model, probably factory made lady or youth? is the seat small? the stirrups leather are narrow. I dont know when the aluminium appear in rigging? Someone have an answer? -

hi Denise: i will take more shot on the donkey tomorrow. I have those 2 shots on my horse i took earlier. I think it fit pretty well. Let me know your opinion I am happy it fit the donkey, i cant wait to ride him with the saddle when it will be repaired, he will have a harder time to put me down ha ha ha! ahh he's a sweet donkey ;-) But a donkey back is quite strange and i am not much sure were to put the saddle then i will need a crouper. He his a standard size. horsehair braider: i do love the color too :-) He is stunning in the autumn, dark brown and cream hair, on the picture he his bleached by sun. -

What is contradictory? I did find a saddle that suit but have work to put on it. I post picture of the tree on the front (yes wood tree) it even fit my donkey well. Gullet on the tree is about 5-5 1/4 " and there is a good clearance for the withers. do you think it's ok? it look like the best fitting saddle i tried so far. If someone have a similar saddle in a better quality, let me know i might still be interrested. -

I have a trooper saddle from 1892 and leather is quite the same condition as this one, so for the age i dont know. What i can say right now is that the modified grimsley tree that barra post in link is very much like mine, just my seat is longer. My husband did find this picture on the web and save for me. It was stated as a "old spanish iberian saddle" is is the exact same tree and same rigging, very very similar...just in a more "western fashion" i contact the guy hope he can provide information... -

Hello Denise i ask an expert in english and canadian cavalry and he told me it is not. He told me there is similarities with american cavalry saddle so for now thats all i have for information.... I have a book on cavalry saddle and yes some are similar but none is exactly alike. The book show the exact same stirrup i have on the saddle, some have a similar pommel (jennifer), but not the cantle. And the rigging seem to be more south american. These old cavalry saddle were very narrow, like mine. But i think south american too were narrow...so...For now i can say it is south american as i have no marking of cavalry on the saddle.
