  1. Beautiful pictures old timer and interresting history facts!!
  2. I ask other people around and yes, it all go to south america. I think it is made to rig center fire. with a V Would love to see one complete as i would like to reproduce the tapaderos, they are missing
  3. YESSS!!!!!!! thats true...haaa... the overall picture was looking photoshoped and unreal to my eyes by didnt notice the wood piles. ha ha ha!
  4. well, i let you judge by yourself...i receive this email with the picture from a friend. It was saying that the guy (From a village in Quebec, Canada) had this moose baby and keep it with his horses, then later all his horses were dead, he decide to harness the moose and work with him. Ok look like a joke, i am still not sure it is true (but fun to see!) My father told me that is possible, he herd from people in noth quebec that happened... ok so here it is how did he put the bridle on? lol!!!!
  5. thanks :-) I dont have the saddle in hand now. According to the seller the tree is wood and weight about 20pound. I know thats cheap but i really wanted the saddle because of the angle of the bar and gullet (so hard to find in used market) Look like a youth saddle, it have 14"seat. interrestinf fact about the deer hides!!
  6. I had a picture of the finished saddle I change all the wool, the guy that "repair" it before me did the worst job i ever see. He put some "real wool on fabric backing" and manage to take many small pieces and sew them together (and not with a flat baseball stich...) he put the wool WITHOUT removing the skirts!!! crazy... Well now its fine for riding
  7. Come on... no one have an idea when fake wool (fleece) appear on some saddles? 50's 60's 70's ?? No one have an old catalog than can attest?
  8. i know it is not a mclellan, i think the old guy was thinking it was a cavalry saddle because of the overall look. I also think paso are quite barrel like. But well, a lot of older saddle were narrower. It is maybe not that at all. It is the first time i see such a saddle.
  9. I would dust it with a dry towel, then give a try with lexol cleaner then conditioner. You can finish with a glycerin soap to give a gloss. Put picture if you want more help on age. I would keep the suede knees as is, if you really want to revive it you need a brass brush but be careful not to pass trough suede. DONT put any oil or lexol on the suede knee.
  10. Hi there, just get this nice looking saddle for my collection, the guy told me"it's a cavalry saddle" well i dont think so, no marking. But some tooling kind of basketweave and some stars on the corner. There is some star rivets (tubular rivets) and there was tapaderos on the 3" wide stirrups (still rivets that show that) All fittings iron. narrow tree, dont fit my horse of course, rawhide covered, laced with rawhide. Tree is cover with wool fabric underneat. Leather is quite nice and good quality, it is similar to my old trooper saddles in color and texture. There is still the latigo ties on the near-side Do you think it is a south american paso fino saddle? thank you for your information, wish i could ride it!
  11. They really have horse that narrow is south america?! thanks for the info. if oneproudmom is the owner of the saddle, can you post a pic of the front side of the saddle?
  12. Wondering because i just buy an older "economic kind" saddle for restoration and it look it have synthetic fleece not sure, i have a hard time telling from picture and guy say it's heavy cotton?! Will be able to say for sure when i'll get it. Anyway i would really like to know about that question if someone can remember when catalog saddles got fitted with something else than sheepskin? Here the saddle (happy find as it have the wide flare and narrow gullet i was looking for :-) It look sheepskin to me...but not sure? i was thinking 50's saddle but not sure now...
  13. I found similar saddles and one on ebay, the front picture was showing an EXTREMLY narrow gullet, dont know for this one. http://cgi.ebay.ca/OLDER-USED-ENGLISH-SADD...93%3A2|294%3A50
  14. Hello, would like to know when you older saddler began to see the synthetic fleece on saddles? 1970's or before?
  15. HEIN??? It is the same picture as the saddle i saw for sale on kijiji in ontario!!! Whos right? ... so yes Barra (same as morgan saddle thread)
  16. Were i put a real wool blanket, i get NO mildou (white stuff) It absorb moisture. So a heavy wool blanker over the saddle help for me. But it can affect the fender near the ground if i forget to wrap them close to the wool. I guess hang stuff quite high from the ground (over a meter) will help too. But that for an outside shed, not a basement.
  17. I looked all around on ebay, used saddle stores and seem that old nice vintage saddle all have semi-qh bars OR very wide gullet that dont fit my horse. I really need a wide angle bars, like a real fqhb (more than 90degree) but with a 6" gullet ideally. my guy have withers, he his not mutton like. He his 14.1hands 800-850lbs probably canadian horse mix I dont like ralide trees (anyway they all seem semi), or synthetic saddle and i prefer leather ground seat...narrowed on the front. I dont like much silver...i preffer strings, but well, will be open... If someone see someting like that for sale, someone willing to ship to Canada... Is that possible without having it custom made or making it myself? I found it is easier to find an english saddle for him than a western thank you
  18. I dont have more pictures, saddle is for sale, if someone interrested to buy (they ask 300$ obo) send me a pm and i will give the info. I really love the shape of that saddle, compact.
  19. According to owners: saddle date back about 1887 come from their farm in Canada. Owners of the actual farm want to sell it.
  20. Look at this nice saddle, seat look great :-) Wondering if any of you old saddlers (hi hi hi) know something about that style?
  21. I use lexol conditioner to restore color after washing, it do not turn leather much darker, just put it as original.Couple of application needed. It is what i did for the first saddle shown on the post "before and after restoration"Saddle soap solid form (bar) for the final touch ( i like the belvoir), it give a soft and shinny finish, help to reatore suppleness, or tan kote if you really want a shinny look but i find that tricky to apply.Better to put the lexol (or oil as needed) when leather is still a little moist
  22. thank you charlie, process? The saddle is dismantle to have the old sheepskin remove and i press flat curled pieces (they have to be wet). Long process, restoration is done over couple of day. dust/wash the saddle with warm water and lexol ph, with a toothbrush for all the tooling, thats a long job, because you have to do it couple of time untill no more dust. Then i use lexol conditioner couple of time, little neetfoot oil to some places very dry out. Then i use saddle soap in the solid form (bar) clean with a toothbrush to remove excess in the tooling. Saddle soap do the job for softening the leather and put a nice gloss. I mostly work on older saddles, they are always dry and dirty. For the pony saddle, i put some tan-kote because it was a display saddle. If you have specific question, ask me.
  23. Hello, i love to see before and after saddles. Hope there is not another post like that? I will post one to begin, and you are invited to do the same on this post if you like :-) Comments/critiques welcome on mines. I am always open to amelioration. that first is an older Higgins this second, i know, concho missing...and i do find i put string on the short side a cute pony saddle
  24. i find a picture of a saddle, you can see a patch on the swell extremity. It look nice with the round head brass escutcheron nails. Wet the leather to form it on the swell. I seen some with scalopped edge, look nice. The saddle you have is probably made with an "easy" to cover (bowman style fork) swell ? As they are intended to be cheap, they make it easy to cover i guess. I have a wintec here, and the welt go up to the top of the swell, almost to the horn, so it is stitched "shaped to the swell" so you dont have to make much stretching like with leather. On mine, the gullet cover it stitched with the swell cover, and staple under. You take the original to make a template so it should be relatively easy.
