What type of sewing machine should I buy?
SOSHorses replied to frunzoaie's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I bought a model 5 from Neels Saddlery and LOVE It. It does everything I need it to do. It does not have a walking foot but it will sew through the toughest stuff. I recently repaired a handle on a Mobility Harness for a disabled lady and her dog. It sewed through two layers of heavy leather (9oz) to encase a steel bar. It was all that would fit under the presser foot but it still did a fantastic job and the stitches didn't suffer in length. I am very pleased with the machine and here is the best part. It didn't cost me 2500 dollars either. I got the table, motor (variable speed), machine for 1345.00 and that was including shipping. I am not sure they are still at this price but they are worth looking at. -
Rose Wallet
SOSHorses replied to SOSHorses's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
No I don't mind it is a Craftaid pattern 6572. I have never minded sharing my patterns. The pattern in my avitar came from Jeff Mosby. He does wonderful work and I was in total awe. I ask and he was very gracious and sent me on of his patterns I had drooled over. If you want a copy of the clean pattern PM me. -
Rose Wallet
SOSHorses replied to SOSHorses's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Yes I have done petal lifts before. However with this being in my back pocket I didn't think they would hold up to the squishing so I didn't bother. Thanks for the suggestion though. Thanks for your comments guys Here is a larger image of my avitar. -
what kind of finish do you put on the leather to stop the black dye from coming off on the riders rear?

Well, I finally got around to making me a wallet. It seems I spend all of my time making stuff for other people and I have never made anything for myself. It looks bad when a potential customer ask to see your work and all you have is a photo. So here are my roses, they are my favorite flower to tool.

All Blacks Rule!
SOSHorses replied to celticleather's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
ok so how did you get the wallet all black except for the design? -
Well, I never really thought of it but I guess horse hide would be good. I just don't think I could stand to use it myself. Don't get me wrong I have stuff made with horse hair but it is hair that I have cut from my horses, and they didn't have to die for me to get it. I just don't think I could wear little rusty.

I am lining a mobility harness for a assistance dog, and need a strip about 24 inches long by 2 inches and then a piece about 6 inches square.

does anyone have a smallish piece of shearling they would like to sell? I have a small project and the lady wants natural fleece instead of the polyblend stuff. I don't need a very big piece and hate to buy a whole hide for one little project. Help would be appreciated.

Finish
SOSHorses replied to 1Man's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
So you guys are air brushing the Resolene? I have been wondering what was the best way to apply the finish without having brush marks or bristles in the finish. Since it is kinda thick it tends to pull the bristles out of my brushes. -
What kind of alcohol?
SOSHorses replied to David's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
I have been working leather for a while now and the man who taught me had been doing it for YEARS. He never said anything about using alcohol before dying. Why would you do this? What have I missed? -
I don't know if they do or not but I know they also sell other brands so you can check with them. The website is Neels Saddlery

You know I am not sure what a compound needle feed is, but this machine has feed dogs only. It is not a walking foot but they are aggressive and I have not had any trouble with the materials feeding through properly.

yeah I don't know what your talking about. Good luck.

Hey guys, Just thought I would pop in and tell you about my new sewing machine. I have been using a light industrial, and a Singer 29-4 machine for almost a year now but neither was really big enough to do halter and breast collar overlays on the thicker nylon. I had been looking around and had decided that I would purchase the Artisan machine. I was doing a bit more searching hoping that I might find one that was used as I really couldn't afford a new one. Then I stumbled on Neel's Saddlery. They had a machine listed on eBay and while reading through the description I became more interested. It uses the same bobbin system as the old Adler 105 and a 328 Needle system. This machine came complete with the motor, table, AND a 7 day money back trial period. My big thing was I needed a machine that could sew the 3/4 of an inch thick material. This one was supposed to do that with ease. So I called and spoke with the the people and after about a 30 min conversation about the types of sewing projects I do and the ability of the machine I bought it with the understanding that I could return it should it now work out for me. When I received the machine of course I had to put it all together. LOL But when I finally got it all finished I oiled the machine and started testing it out. My first test was the cheek piece of a halter. No problem at all. I had room to spare! I was very pleasantly surprised and decided I would dig around and see what else I could sew with it. After about 30 minutes I was hooked. This machine is amazing! So besides the fact that it easily sews through three pieces of 8 to 10 oz leather, wait for it (building anticipation).... It was only $1,195!!! You have to check out this machine! I know that 2300 dollars is a lot of money to spend and most of us just can't but this machine is a god send. I am posting the link to the auction I purchased it from. Neel hasn't yet got his website up and going completely so I can't send you there. I am telling you it is worth checking out. Yes that is PERFECT!! Thank you so much!!!

Okay. Here is the next dumb question. What is a reverse twist? and Narrow Cross Point? My old machine had a chisel point leather needle but it would make a straight line of stitching. This one off sets the thread just a bit making it at an angle. So is the S point the one I use for the straight line?

is this what you are talking about?
