  1. Just to show some more recent straps, I'm posting this photo. I started doing a little more stitching. I've also done some padded type straps that I can post later. Thank you all for your feedback so far. I actually posted a few to Etsy and on Reddit sales groups based on your suggestions and honesty. Thank you all!
  2. Here she is. It came with extra needle plates, the treadle table, boxes of needles, the original manual, and a bunch of other great stuff for $200 USD.
  3. That's the best part. Except there have been other projects where I had no clue what I was doing that ended up as piles of scrap steel in my garage. Haha.
  4. It's not glow in the dark. It's a light mint green. The overhead light in my workshop kind of whitewashed the color. She actually picked the color because she said not reminded her of enamel paint from old kitchenaid mixers in the early 1950s -60s I think. She actually isn't going to put any my little pony stickers on it, but she is in charge of reproduction of a singer decal with her cricut. We shall see how it goes. Thanks for the feedback. I'm addicted to buying old machines now. I'm actually in the car out front of someone's house picking up an old 29k72 at this moment.
  5. I don't know if you're interested or not, and I'm probably going to be crucified for doing this, but I painted it and its almost back together after a thorough cleaning. It is really tough to tear down and rebuild a sewing machine. Especially when you have no clue what you are doing. One thing I want to add is that my 8year old daughter picked the color.
  6. Thank you all. I think I am going to give it a go then. I appreciate the feedback. Fingers crossed.
  7. I've been making at least one leather watch strap a day for about 2.5 -3 years now. I have yet to feel confident enough to actually exchange any of them for money. I would love it if some of you could critique them. If you feel up to it, let me know what a good price may be for similar items if they are even something someone would buy. I'm really worried that if I sell one, someone may complain and return it. I have sold merchandise on ebay for a few years and I think that process scarred me a little. Any who, please give feedback if you're up to it. Photos can be found Here , Here , and Here
  8. And I am sorry for the improper wording for the needle bar guide and calling it a thread guide. I am really, really new to sewing machines and the terminology. That was my mistake. Sorry to confuse.
  9. Thank you again for the response. I also have a couple of other machines that use the 135x17 needle. My consew 226RB-2 specifically, which is the machine I use the most. I needed a machine to finish tote bags and to stitch shoes. I didn't have the budget for more machines, especially a modern post bed. So I found this one at auction for very cheap. I am essentially trying to replicate the exact same setup that you were able to accomplish. I figured that what you did A.gives me a working machine with out the complications of having dissimilar needles and other parts and B. Is a known process which seems to work based on your documentation. I am not nitpicking what you did in any way. Rather, I am a novice when it comes to sewing machines. I found last night, that though the machine was/is extremely dirty and needed lubrication, but actually stitches well after I changed the stitch length based off of your suggestions. I am waiting for the new needle bar in the mail. I have found one issue which may not even be an issue. There seems to be some play from side to side of I move the hand wheel from side to side which translates across the shaft from the back of the machine to the front take up lever. Is this normal? If not, are there bushings between the hand wheel and shaft and the shaft and take up lever connection in the front that are worn out? Also, the keeper for the bobbin case, had it's spring loaded tab broken off. How can I remove the Hooke assembly to replace the entire bobbin case and hook? Is it a set screw like most hooks on industrial machines that would be accessed from the bottom of the machine?
  10. So I robbed a needle bar from my old Singer 111D which rests on a shelf for some years already and - surprise surprise - the needle bar is pretty much the same so I now can use 135x17 needles - downside is the 111D needle bar is shorter. It works but I have to install a extra guide (have to figure how to do this - already have an idea). I didn't see any follow up to this in your later posts. I assumed that the original guide wouldn't work because the needle bar on the 111D was shorter than the original on the 51w.
  11. Nevermind the needle plate question. I think I found it here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/143603162021
  12. What needle plate did you end up using? I tried to open the link you provided. However, as it has been a little while since you posted, it seems to be no longer working. I tried to Google golden wheel 810 and 820 needle plate to no success. I hope you don't mind, but I am going to use your trial and error to replicate your success. I am also curious what you used as a second thread guide for the shorter needle bar? Thank you for the information you have already provided.
  13. It looks like you may be starting out with leather pieces that are uneven.to begin with. Try using a square to cut. Use a very sharp box knife or razor of some sort. Leave a trim allowance. Then mark your lines with a wing divider of some type.
  14. I asked my grandparents, father, and mother many years ago to write an autobiography about themselves. That way, when they were gone I could have something that highlighted their lives in their own words that I could go back and read to keep their memories alive. My father was never someone that would consider writing anything and he kind of laughed the request off. "Who would be interested in my life?" He said. He passed two years ago. When going though his belongings, I found a journal. He actually kept a journal to me for the last year of his life. I haven't been able to bring myself to read the whole thing yet, but it was the greatest gift I could have ever received. All of this to say, keep it up. It will be appreciated.
  15. For wallets and smaller goods like watch straps, it may be hard to even use a wing divider. Maybe not for everyone, but it was for me. There is a tool called a castroviejo caliper. It is a mini wing divider with a very fine tip. For me, it has made a huge difference when trying to get straight lines on a wallet. Also, try using very thin leather like a 2 oz for each layer. The thicker the leather, the harder it is to punch an even stitching hole through each layer evenly. The layers tend to shift. If you prefer thicker leather, skive the areas where you will be stitching, down to a 2 oz or so. This will help immensely.
  16. You are a saint. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! I will give that a go when I return home. I also plan to attempt to refurbish this machine as much as I can. When you powder coated yours, did you remove any of the internals when you were curing it in an oven?
  17. Thank you for your reply.. I was able to find a little about this machine, but not much of it really made sense as I am unfamiliar with a double needle machine. Is the difference in gauges the length of the needle bar? Or the spacing between two needle bars? I really appreciate the help.
  18. Fantastic. Thank you for the info. I actually purchased it to sew bags and shoes where my consew 226 is lacking. Especially when I comes to stitching bags. Any idea how to adjust the feed dog height? It seems that the feed dogs do not actually "grab" the work piece and feed it through the to stitch. They sit about 1-2 mm above the needle plate at their highest point won't feed. I can't really diagnose the issue. I don't know where to really start. There isn't a vibrating walking foot so it isn't a compound feed. I assume the feed dog is the only feeding mechanism?
  19. I am on vacation at the moment, so I don't have any good photos at this time. I attached what I have. I want to thank your for your replies to my questions. The post about your restoration of the singer 51wSV2 machine was actually the reason I joined the forum. I was hoping someone could answer some questions that were not covered in those posts as well as offer some further explanation on the topics you covered. I have 5 sewing machines but am a novice at best. I bought the brother double needle and this machine from an auction for the Maryland department of corrections. Both of them were used to manufacture shoes and garments for inmates by inmates. Pretty interesting history I think. At least the little bit I do know. Thanks again!
  20. Hello all. I recently acquired a Brother LT2-B836-5 Double Needle Industrial Sewing Machine. I cannot find a manual or any solid information on this model and wondered if anyone out there may have some knowledge about this machine and it's value in terms of being able to sew leather. As I am not very knowledgeable about sewing machines in general, your help would be appreciated. I have read that similar models can have gauges swapped out to assist in sewing increasingly thicker materials. Is this the case with this machine? Can it be used to sew veg tan leather around 6-8 ounce? Thanks again!
  21. I recently purchased a Singer 51w-25. I want to purchase a few parts for it, but cannot find any information about it at all. I haven't even been able to find another example of one online anywhere. Can anyone tell me what parts may be interchangeable from other post bed machines? I don't really know anything about the type or model of this machine. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you, Jesse
