Finished up another Bible Cover, kinda like the way this came out. Still need to get the machine stitching down pat tho... Used Wickett and Craig leather this time around. YinTx

Another Bible cover delivered recently as a repeat order from a client who purchased a similar cover for a different Bible some months ago. Actually, the Bible was first restored by an experienced book binder friend ofmine, who replaced the soft cover seen to the left in the picture below, before I started work on the leather cover. Leather is a factory dyed (painted?) "Italian shoe upper leather" according to the seller, and measures 1.5mm thick. Edge done with a locally available water based "belt edge" paint and finished with beeswax and a good rub with a piece of denim. Tooling done on a separate piece of 1.2mm vegtan, using only a beveler and modelling tool, i.e. no swivel knife used. Tooling lines traced with a black felt tipped pen before a mid-brown dye was applied by hand with a scrap of shearling. All stitching by hand (as with all my projects), in this case using a Chinese acrylic three strand "upholstery thread" in mid-brown to match the dye on the tooling piece. Feedback welcome.

From the album: Just tooling around
When we were married, my wife designed her bouquet to sit upon the first Bible I had bought for her. when we were married a few years, I saw that she had stopped bringing this Bible to church with us and was bringing another one. When I asked her about it she said that the cover was getting beat up. I decided I would make her a new cover. This is the back, with the Scripture from Song of Solomon that was our theme, "I have found the one whom my soul loves" -

I want to make a bible cover for my friend. I'm a beginner and haven't a clue where to start. What weight leather should I use? Does it need to be wet formed? Does anyone have a link to a tutorial or video?

This was based off the Tandy kit. This is my first piece to not use a kit. Ued thicker leather, better lace and small cross concho. The inside flaps that hold the bible in are scrap upholstery leather and I lined the inside with black pigskin. Mothers Day gift. Learned a lot more for next project. -

Hey all, Here are some projects I finished recently. The two bible covers are for a friends son who is headed to the Naval Academy at Annapolis. One cover features the official Dept of the Navy seal and the other the revered USN Anchor. The other (photo collage) is of two notebook covers. A fathers day gift. Thanks for checking them out - enjoy. Murray

Kit leather. I used larger lace and replaced velcro "clasp" with brass snap. Do not like kits but like the pattern -
