  1. Hello all! Here is a leather tote bag I finished a while ago. The handles are an 8 strand round braid and the first thing I've braided. The leather is 8oz veg-tan with soft pigskin lining on the inside. The sheridan pattern is my own work. This is also my first time using a bar grounder in my carving. Let me know what you think! Critique welcome. -Ryan
  2. Here are some chink chaps I made for two of my sisters. I think they turned out pretty well and they are getting a lot of use. Let me know what you think. Critique is always welcome. Thanks for viewing! Ryan

    Hackamore Noseband

Hello! Here is a noseband I made for my horse's hackamore. Hope you like it! -Ryan P.S. I now have an Instagram page as a gallery for my work. You can see it at www.doublercustomleather.com
  4. Hello all! Here is a roper wallet (or long wallet) that I just finished for myself. Btw, my nickname is Nate in case you're confused. I needed to make myself a wallet so I could have some of my work with me when meeting potential customers. Also, my Cabela's wallet was falling apart. It is lined with Tandy's super soft pigskin. When I showed it to my dad, he said I should have stamped "A fool and his money are soon parted" on the inside flap... (I think I should have done that too considering how often I go to Tandy... ) Let me know what you think! Comments/critique always welcome. Thanks for looking! -Ryan
  5. Hello, again! Here is the gun belt to the holster I posted earlier. A friend commissioned me to make it for his 45 Colt Ruger Blackhawk. He's a big fan of tie-down roping and asked me to incorporate some roping scenes. Let me know what you think and please ask if you have any questions. -Ryan

    harder than it looks

I never really considered how much work goes into certain projects. Sheridan and other forms of floral carving seem to be the most common when it comes to leather craftsmanship. We see it everywhere but I never understood how much work really goes into it. This is my first attempt and I'm still not done with this one piece but it is the back of a purse I am doing for my mother as a present.
  7. Hello all! My dad asked me to make him a pair of chaps. The deal was that he'd buy the materials and I'd do the work. Sorry, but that was a special deal for dad only. This took me about 40 hours to do. All of the pattern/design is my own work. Let me know what you think! I will post some pics of my dad wearing them soon. Thanks for looking! -Ryan
  8. Howdy folks! Just finished my second holster for a client. I still have to make the gun belt and fully tool it.... but I don't want to think about that right now. Tooling pattern is my own and the shape of the holster was copied off the original holster. There's still plenty of room for improvement but you know... I'll get there eventually. Let me know what you think! Comments/critique always welcome. Cool gun belt coming soon.... -Ryan

    First drawings

Hello. My two very first drawings
  10. Ok, guys. This should make you smile... Enjoy! All of the tooling was my own design. The leather is 3-4 oz. veg belly. Comments or critique is always welcome! -Ryan
  11. Howdy guys and gals. One of my friends asked me to make this journal for his Christmas gift to his girlfriend. The leather is 8/9 oz. European single bend from Tandy. Let me know what you think. Critique and comments are always welcome. (Note the screwdriver petal lifter in the second pic. I got the idea from YinTx in his post.)
  12. Hello, all! I am trying to draw my own patterns so my carving will custom fit on any project. Also, I want to learn how to draw my own patterns in order to be completely original. Here is my first attempt at drawing Sheridan free hand. I made the pattern up off the top of my head. Please feel free to critique.

  16. Hello everybody! I have a few seats left in several classes. I will be excepting walk-ins in "Antiquing & Finishes", "Burnishing" and "Exotic Inlays", so if you're on the fence or decide to change your mind, You're welcome to attend (until the room is full...first come first serve). See you there!!!!
  17. I will be teaching SADDLE CONSTRUCTION design and patterning, using concepts that can be applied to other areas of construction--- including holsters, knife sheaths, saddle bags, rifle scabbards, and various cases. There are only a few seats left for both classes; however there are several openings for just the first day. Day 1 is Lecture and Demonstration. I will teach you how to take a sketch of your concept / idea and translate it to a functional design, and then to usable patterns. If you can only attend the first day, you will still go away with all of the hand-outs, notes, and a plan and method. You should be able to go home and create your own patterns after only taking this class. Day 2 is Application---I will help you make your own patterns for your own tree. You will go home with patterns! Call me with questions. 307-272-1881. http://www.leathercraftersjournal.com/product.cfm?product=851 http://www.leathercraftersjournal.com/product.cfm?product=852

    Styles

I'm getting back into leathercraft after a hiatus of a few years. I'm not "into" sheridan style (nothing wrong with it but it's not my taste). Are there other schools of style? I'm searching for ideas, tools, templates, etc.. I don't mind doing the flowers and western decor, especially as they do help develop skills,,but am looking for something that, for lack of a better term, excites me. Thanks! Sam
  19. Vandy and Luke, owners of Sheridan Leather Outfitters have put the place up for sale. Details can be found at sheridanleather.forsale If the business doesn't sell immediately, they plan to close before the Rocky Mountain Leather Show in May. They are willing to let everything go, and if you don't make a deal before closing, there will be an auction. SLO has an excellent reputation and a profitable business. Surely there is someone out there that can run with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? We wish Luke and Vandy all the best in the next chapter of their lives. We've been proud to have them as supporters and friends for many years. They will be just as successful in their next adventure, I'm sure, because good luck always seems to follow hard work.
  20. I have already posted this piece on the "critique" part of the forums, but then I noticed there was one especially for Sheridan work, so I thought I would put it here too. Folks on the "critique" board have already advised me that my leather was too wet when I was carving it. This is the one major thing I'm going to have to watch out for on my next one. Since people on this board specialize in Sheridan style though, I must know if there are any additional Sheridan-specific tips for when I try this again. Are there any must-have blades, stamps, or other tools I should know about? I have most of the Al Stohlman books but only a VERY basic beginner collection of tools. I feel that my carving looks very blocky and clumsy. Aside from just practicing, maybe there is something I'm doing that's just totally wrong (besides the leather being too wet)?
  21. For Sale - My collection of floral patterns that I designed for my saddles. They are all original custom designed, based on the Sheridan style, but with some unique flowers and leaves. The patterns are pencil on mylar drafting film, which is heavier than the flimsy stuff that Tandy sells and takes the pencil lead much better. So, it's perfect for transferring to wet leather and can be erased and re-drawn to fit a particular part. There are full carve patterns for the seat, fenders, cantle, rigging and skirts, as well as some spot florals. Most have left and right design as well as the transition design from left to right for the seat. Most were made for round skirts and jocks, but one is for a more square skirt and jocks. Price: The entire bunch for $45 plus shipping. PM or email if interested.
  22. Hi all, I'm from Vietnamese and a newbie in this forum. I learn a lot from this forum. Today I want to bring many thanks to everyone and show you a new women wallet. This is a gift for my wife in 20/10 day (this day is women day in my country ^^)
  23. What do you think of our new tooled leather wallet. Please feel free to offer us any feedback or advice. Thanks! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwBIzVlenRI
  24. I'm starting a kickstarter program to help go to Sheridan this year when my first option fell through. And and all help is appreciated so if you can toss in a couple bucks, thank you. Cheryl https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1572920904/attending-sheridan-may-2015-for-leatherwork
  25. Hey folks! I just completed this picture frame mat.
