Handmade is expensive, so should we give the price right away? If you are selling your works, you have surely done this more than once: Reveal the price and the customer runs away.... Handcraft should cost its money, the hours we spend, knowledge and experience that can be seen in the selection of leathers/hardware and finishing details is a valuable value. So you can't sell works at chain store prices. The price must stay high - it's a premium product, not for everyone. When someone asks "How much for that?" - we should give the price right away? Since most sellers delay responding to the price question, you’ll immediately differentiate yourself by giving the direct response the buyer is requesting. It also suggests you are unashamed of your prices. Give the price - but in context. "It costs X $" - it is not enough. In addition to the price, you need to interest the customer, encourage him to continue the conversation and, in a way, distract his thoughts from the price itself. So that he does not consider whether it is worth it or not - he will do it at the end of the conversation. Here are the 5 simplest techniques for giving a price with a distraction: 1. Price + Benefit: "The preliminary price is $____ with the little story behind. When someone asks "What's that?" - you will start the story, about joint design, about an idea, about a craftsman. How important is this benefit to you?" 2. Price + Question: "The preliminary price is $____ and that includes choice of leather. Please tell me what criteria, other than price, are most important to make your final decision?" 3. Price + Personalization: "The preliminary price is $____ and we will add something special for you like a guitarist dice pocket. I’m thinking this is the cool additional for you because you play guitar. Let me ask you some additional questions to confirm that I’m on the right track." 4. Price + Budget Check: "The preliminary price is $_____. Tell me how this sounds in terms of your budget and the prices you’ve heard from others." 5. Price + Anchoring Price: "I would compare the ____ I make to premium brand like LV, Fendi, Channel etc. that cost a couple of times more. I use much more expensive veg-tan leather and traditional craftsmanship - yet I have lower prices. Our price is $ _____. Of course, this will not make literally everyone suddenly buy an expensive handmade product. But it will make you able to have a longer dialogue with him and present the advantages, benefits and show that it is something more. If you are struggling with the sale of your work, below you will find 9 ready-made sales texts which show the benefits of leatherworks and convince sales (I study marketing). Hi! I just opened my Etsy shop and filled out the shop announcement section. Since I'm not a native English speaker, I probably made a few mistakes in my text, both grammar and sentence structure. If you don't mind , I copy/paste the text below. You can copy it back corrected, and I will send 5$ for your help. Thanks! Here's the text : - Most of the items on my shop are unique, since I work with different kind of leather and enjoy making different project every time. I have a huge collection of different colors and thickness. - I always try to make the most out of every piece of leather I have and I use every square inch of the hide I'm working with. Simply to avoid wasting precious material, money and in a way, a respect to the animal it uses to belong to. This is one of the many ways I use to be environmentally friendly in my shop. - I also use Eco-friendly products, from water based glue and dye to second hand sewing machines or tools. In proper hands and proper care, your leather item will last for years and even decades, resulting in less garbage in the landfill. Little story, I used to buy PU leather wallet ( PU is faux leather, fake leather, which is a piece of fabric coated with polyurethane ) and most of them would last from three to six months. I decided one day to buy a genuine leather wallet, although six times more expensive. Here I am, 12 years later, with the same wallet, in real good condition that will still last me few more years! In the long term, leather is money saving and eco friendly! If you have any custom projects, don't hesitate to contact me ! Thanks Dominic

Hi guys! got some 0.8mm Ritza 25 "Tiger" thread for sale with free shipping. I got 0.8mm because 1.0mm was just a bit too big for me. I make things like pencil and tool cases/rolls, belts, and small purses/bags with thinner leather so I like my stitches to be small but still have strength and a nice full look, and 0.8mm tiger thread was the perfect size for me. 1.0mm seemed more for bigger items with thicker leather. Anyway, I figured I don't need a full spool, so I thought I'd sell some of the extra for people who want to try it out or need smaller amounts. If they sell, I'll get more. It's really a great thread, my favorite by far. Here's a list of what I've got. 0.8mm - JK 2 Beige - Very slightly Pink on white. 0.8mm - JK 7 Mid Brown - A nice rich Dark-ish Brown. 0.8mm - JK 77 Havanna Cigar - Tobacco Brown, lighter than Mid Brown 0.8mm - JK 79 Colonial (Tan) - Looks yellow in my pictures but is more like yellowish light brown. Coming soon... 0.8mm White JK 1 -out of stock 0.8mm Black JK 23 -out of stock 0.8mm Amber Glow JK 76 -out of stock Pricing: Including free shipping to the US! 20 meters / 65.6 feet = $6.45 40 meters / 131.2 feet = $9.00 60 meters / 196.8 feet = $12.99 80 meters / 262.5 feet = $16.50 1 meter Sample Card of each color thread (4 meters total) = $4.00 Scrap sample card 1 of each color (My leftover pieces of thread that are too short to use, average 2-3 inches long, still good for deciding on color and if the thread is right for you) = $1.40 If you need any other amount or want to request a color just ask! To order some just send me a P.M with how much you want and your email, Or email JEM_Leather@outlook.com. I will create a Paypal invoice which will be sent to your email for payment. Non-US residents can contact me for shipping prices I also just started an Etsy page you can order from too! I will have more items added soon. Paypal is probably the best way to do this so that you know you have buyer protection and stuff. Pictures: Keep in mind these are not exact as my camera doesn't really capture the color perfectly. The picture with the most exact colors are the ones of the sample cards at the bottom. Beige Mid-Brown Havanna Cigar

So I finally gave in and tried selling one of my leather projects on Etsy, a tooled leather belt, every aspect of it hand done, and I put it up to sell to help fund my other leather purchases as I am living on a college budget, but my issue is it hasn;t sold yet and I am wondering if there is something that is unappealing about it, is the price to high? The workmanship not good enough? Or could it be just that I don't have a reputable name yet. Looking for any comments or advice, good and bad. Please let me know. Feelin' a bit neglected here ... SO many etsy shops by LW folks! So, now there's one fer me. I haven't had an 'actual' web site in years, though I'm told that's being re-done (the old one would not work today anyway). BUT, I hate to have etsy shoppers get the wrong idea about how leather should look. This should be enough to show the real 'web' guys what I want, too. Check it out at jlsleather.etsy.com

Hello everyone! I'm new to this environment and would like to introduce myself (I tried looking for the specific board to introduce myself as a newbie but not sure if I overlooked it). Name's Chris [from California] and started this leather craft journey about close to 2 years ago. I've been in my cave honing in on the most efficient methods of constructing quality leather goods. I'm still in the fetal stages of blossoming the business. At the moment still developing templates and prototypes for more elaborate products (bifolds, messenger bags, holsters, etc.). So my inquiry is moreso based on the presentation/marketing aspects [i.e. What draws you in or away?] ANYHOW... Would love to get a critique on what I have out so far before I officially launch my own .com webstore. My .com domain is (for now) directly attached to my blog template which has a link to my shop at top. But in a few months I will be migrating that domain name to an actual webstore for my "brand". Just wanted to know if there was anything I can improve upon in terms of the presentation. My website at the moment is: www.mojobazaar.com and my shop link is: www.mojobazaar.etsy.com I infinitely appreciate the time! And if there is anything I should know about forum etiquette, please let me know if this was an inappropriate post. Cheers, Chris
