Hello all, Not sure if this is the right section to be posting in, but it seemed the most logical. I have a large brass stamp, 10cm x 10cm. It came with an electric branding iron advertised to handle that size of brass stamp, but it does not get hot enough to properly brand the leather. It will smoke the leather, but it wont singe it like with the smaller brands. I am planning on using it on both wood and leather, but the heater I have simply wont work, by the time it gets to its maximum temperature, it starts to melt the black handle. So, either I need a cheap recommendation (under $200) for a better electric iron, or I need some advice on how to heat it up alternatively. I have heard that you can heat it up over an open flame, so I was planning on getting a butane torch from walmart and trying that out, but I am worried that I will get the brand too hot and it will burn the wood/leather too much as I have experienced in the past branding when an iron gets too hot. Is there a good method for doing this? How long to hold the flame over the brand? If the brand gets red hot, is that TOO hot? Thanks! Zayne

Hello! I have been working out of a small space for quite a while, but recently have the opportunity to move into a 2,000 square foot steel building. Yes I know - I could park a 747 in there. Most of it wont be used for production, but I was wondering how to heat the place for winter? Outside air temps are typically 40 degrees. It's got 18 ft. ceilings and is pretty much a large open space. I was thinking at first - using vented propane radiant tube heating. However, since this is infrared heating and heats objects....does anyone have experience with using this type of heating with leatherwork below? Is it a bad idea? I can hang them fairly high. The other option is forced air via one of those hanging units, or possibly a typical home furnace. That seemed a bit of a waste considering the size of the space and height of the ceiling. All of the hot air would go to the top! Anyhow - just looking to see if anyone has experience heating a space this large, especially for leatherwork and any considerations for it. Thanks!

Hello all, I use a heating iron to heat my custom stamps, then transfer the stamp to my piece of leather and finally use my 1 ton arbor press to get a good impression on my leather. I have been using an oven mitt to transfer the stamp from the heating iron to the piece of leather. It's a bit uncomfortable but it worked alright. Well now the heat from the stamp has burned a hole in the mitt. Any suggestions on gloves I can use to handle the stamp? Also, would a heat gun work well for heating my stamps? Thanks!

Hello all, I am looking for a good quality hand heat embosser. I emboss mostly vegetable tanned lamb nappa and camel leather. I need something with which I can emboss initials. I bought one from Hong Kong and it was flimsy and far too long. Anything US made or european made if there is such a thing would be ideal. Thank you in advance. L

Sorry if this has been discussed before in a different section. I don't seem to be finding a lot of info. I've been searching for ideas on a DIY drying cabinet. Would like it to be long enough to handle belts and also roomy for holsters and other projects. Energy efficient too. I'm in the Midwest so solar may not work too well at least if the past few months of grey skys are any indication. I did see a few using incandescent lights, just looking for additional ideas (plastic container vs. wood, use insulation or don't, should have a fan to move air or not necessary, any extra ideas that you tried that worked or ended up not being worth it, etc.) before I move forward with the build. Pictures would be great if you have them. Thanks in advance.....
